15 years ago I was just a college student walking dogs for some extra cash. Last picture was taken in Ridley State Creek Park, with some of my first ever doggy clients. Absolutely loved my walks out in the Philly burbs. Now my walks are under the palms by the beach. College me never would have thought i’d start my own business in Florida doing this, giving me the freedom and ability to surround myself in Mother Nature. I’ve been an animal & nature lover my whole life, so it definitely makes sense. I am so grateful for all of the animals in this world, especially the ones i’ve had the pleasure of knowing & loving - my own animals, friends & family’s, & the strangers who have become friends along the way. Thank you for trusting me to care for your animals. Animals are such a blessing to this earth and to all of us. Thank you everyone for the love & support you have given me over the years, I really & truly appreciate it. 2 Year Anniversary ✨🌞

When I started Walking on Sunshine, I wanted to get away from working late hours and partying to the early morning (days i’ll remember forever) but also b/c I have such a huge love for all things nature, especially animals. Shortly after turning 30 in August, I stopped drinking which led to rescuing a 6 month pup in Oct 2024 (ty @naomicorrine ).

A mattress and a couch later, my street dog from PR soon turned into not only my best friend, but every dog I walk or we meet, their best friend as well. It just makes sense that she is my dog, iykyk. My Kai, I can go on about her forever, as we all can about our dogs bc duh they are incredible creatures. A lady at the dog park shouted out one day, dog is God spelt backwards. They really are Gods gift to us.

Flash forward to Oct 2025, God sent me another gift, my son, my sunshine, my River Sterling. Motherhood, just wow in every indescribable way. The female body is so unbelievably incredible. Whilst pregnant, my Kai and cats every night would come nest with me. It was one of my favorite things of pregnancy, seeing how their behaviors and energies changed for me and baby.

What I was not expecting was how much Kai matured, more so than I could have ever imagined, with the arrival of River. This dog has grown so much within a year and it has been remarkable to witness. From having to practice walking next to her with a stroller to her sitting and guarding us while I nurse under a random palm tree. The loyalty, growth, love, goofiness, and all of the above just gets better each day.

She is far from perfect, but she is perfect for us & we still yell her name several times a day lol so no doubt River’s first word will prob be Kai. Motherhood is hard work. These two have given me more reasons to continue to work hard.

I believe you can do anything you set your mind to. These days you’ll catch me with a 14lb baby on my chest, Kai attached to me, and another dog’s leash in hand. Riv and Kai make the long days worth it. They are my reasons for starting my new business, @sunnytails.sunshine ! Hiya, I just wanted to jump on here to give you a little about me so that you know who is caring for your animals! My name is Kelsey Dougherty @kaydoc , I am originally from South Philadelphia & have been living in South Florida for 3 years now! I am 29 years old and have been dog walking since I was 14! Growing up, I had dogs, cats, turtles, rabbits, and even had a baby alligator in my care (long story). I spent a lot of time on Ranches with farm animals as well! Safe to say I have a huge appreciation and love for all wildlife & nature. When i’m not soaking in the sunshine, I am playing basketball, having football & baseball catches, or going on adventures to different parts of Florida! The last 12 years I have worked in restaurants and bars & finally took a step back from the night life to enjoy early mornings and more time with animals. I feel very blessed and grateful that I have the ability to do this! Thank you to everyone who has already allowed me to care for your animals & to future pet owners, your animals will be in good hands, I can promise you that. Dog backwards is God and they truly are gifts from above. Real life angels that have to return home one day. My Micholas, our Mickey, my cow, my first dog, my first son, I hope you are eating all the treats, meatballs, swimming your heart out & playing in the sand up in doggy heaven. Naturally I did not plan to get a dog, but he quickly became part of the Dougherty family. I was just a sophomore in college when he came into my life. He came to bars with me, house parties, friends houses when I had to work, he came everywhere with me. He was such a little wild pup and I had no idea what to do with a puppy, but you were my best friend. After hiding him in my college house & the owner found out, I begged my parents to keep him. He quickly became my mom & dad’s best friend too. My mom would still say “your son” when she spoke to me about him. I taught him to drive a car, we even tore our ACLs at the same time, & then did PT to get better together. He loved to swim down in OBX and play in the sand. The list goes on & on. But thank you to everyone who helped me in my college days & thank you to my parents for taking him in. I know you’ll be with me on all my dog walks, my sonshine. We all love you so much Mick, thanks for being our dog and giving us the best love, we will miss you more than you know 🖤🤍🫶🏽🙏🏽✨ by @walkingonsunshineac
