During Covid, I cast Gloria Steinem’s hands at her home with her signature rings. There was one, without, that shows a vulnerability, reminding me of how brave she has always been, long fingers open, reaching out to others in service, and in the kindest and most feminine way. The warrior is within. I just love her. by @wanderer50

Last year, I cast Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s hands—it is part of a project in which I have cast the hands of exemplary women. I asked Justice Ginsburg to bring the pen she used to write her decisions. She put her hand in the alginate, and I guided her to just let the pen go. Upon pouring the plaster into the mold, a swirl of purple began to mix into the liquid. It was the ink from her pen, an ordinary, felt-tip marker. The ink stained her hand and fingertips as if her words were pouring from her veins to the page. On Friday, September, 18, 2020, I was working on the base for RBG’s hands, just an adjustment and polish, so I could bring the sculpture to Washington. Just as I’d finished, she had passed away. On Monday Sept 21, one of the most conservative and inexperienced judges in our history was nominated for Ginsburg’s seat. And last night, to the shame of our great nation, that judge, was confirmed. I recall a chapter in Justice Ginsburg’s book acknowledging women who came before her or were at her side, women who, by their bravery and hard work, allowed her to flourish. She called them “Waypavers” and “Pathmarkers.” In the same spirit, I would like to acknowledge Justice Ginsburg, for writing words that became law to create fairness. She has finally let go of her pen forever, but not without giving women a tool with which to navigate. The rest is up to us. #vote #rbg

I am feeling very grateful that these talented artists celebrated in front of Bird MMXXIII. Thank you to the brilliant Hanif Abdurraqib @nifmuhammad for reading a poem about a bird. And the multi-talented Jive poetic @jivepoetic , with his gift of gravitas combined with a light-hearted soul. And Indigo Goodson-Fields @indigoindaflow , birder And poet(and Paola Antonelli @paolantonelli for the introduction). And Susan Said Band @susansaidband76 , with her poetic lyrics and beautiful voice. All of this magic happened as the sun set behind the Statue of Liberty on a breezy clear night after the fires raged and the sky thundered and stormed. We danced until the island closed. It truly was a magnificent ending to an Odyssey. Thank you @governorsisland (Juan Pablo)and the @poetrysocietyny (Tova)for your partnership with this endeavor. A special shoutout to Joanne russell @rubyrex for the iconic photo above and Dr.Mahogany Browne @mobrowne for her photo of Hanif. And Ariane Zurcher @arianezurcher for her photo of me❤️ by @wanderer50

In 2011, a very close friend invited me to the performance of “Once,” a musical in a very small theatre. The doors to the theatre opened into a stage set as an Irish pub where the all-actor-musician-ensemble were having a jam session and we were invited to join them. The entire cast with their instruments never left the stage. All of us were transformed and we floated out of the theatre.
On the day Glen Hansard passed, I was in my studio—“Two Ballerinas” and “Eurynome Dance” began to twirl. There are many different versions of Eurynome’s origins. That she rose from Chaos as the supreme creator goddess is the one I love most. She conjures the universe with a single dance, including the oceans and the land—her name meaning, “she of broad pastures.” This brings me to the green pastures of Ireland, the origins of Glen Hansard, and the great spirit that runs through all of us if we allow it. A few hours before he crashed, he was busy, conjuring the world with a single song in a local pub. Within hours the streets were filled with buskers and Dubliners singing together while the rest of the world lit up. taken in Hotel Chelsea by @wanderer50
