Building Curious Minds & Kind Hearts through Books, STEM & Community
šŸ  Children’s Bookstore Fall ā€˜26 | 510 W Main St | @casitaazul.libros
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Let’s Try This Again ā¤ļøāœØ ONCE UPON A MAIN STREET… our fairy tale needed a village.

Wandering Bookstall started with a simple dream: A place where every child can find a book they love. A place where curiosity is encouraged, creativity has room to grow, and families can simply be together. A place where a family’s budget doesn’t determine whether their child gets to experience the magic of a bookstore.

This fall, we’re working toward a permanent home in downtown Waxahachie. We’re building a place with spaces and experiences that we hope will be free and accessible to our whole community. But every good fairy tale needs a village. šŸ”āœØ

There are a few ways you can become part of ours:

šŸ¤ BECOME A VILLAGE VOLUNTEER
Help us paint, build bookshelves, create our community garden, prepare our spaces, and bring the store to life. Once we open, we’ll also need volunteers for storytimes, events, and programming.

šŸ” BECOME A FOUNDING VILLAGE MEMBER
Your contribution helps us create the community spaces we’ve dreamed about, like our backyard, indoor play spaces, classroom experiences, and all the little details that will make this more than a bookstore. We also created a wishlist!

šŸ‘• PRE-ORDER OUR COMMEMORATIVE T-SHIRT
Adults and youth sizes are available, and $10–$13 from every shirt purchased goes directly toward our build-out!

A HUGE thank you to @mori.ah for volunteering her incredible talent and illustrating this beautiful design for us. ā¤ļø

We’re not a big company. We’re a regular family, with regular jobs and regular resources, trying to build something extraordinary for our neighbors.

It takes parents. Grandparents. Teachers. Retired teachers. Neighbors. It takes a village.
So… will you be part of our story? šŸ”āœØ

Opening up. ā¤ļø

I left my job as an ER nurse a little over a year ago because my body was asking me to slow down. I needed to heal, and I wanted more time with my kids.

I had absolutely no plan to open a bookstore.

Like so many families, we were feeling the weight of today’s economy. It became clear I needed to find a way to contribute financially again—but I wasn’t sure how.

Then life threw us another curveball.

When our van was totaled we could’ve replaced it.

Instead, my ADHD brain said, ā€œWhat if we replaced the van payment with a bookstore lease?ā€ šŸ˜‚

It sounded ridiculous.

But somehow… it worked. So there I am biking to this 180 square foot room I signed for sweat on my forehead and a smile on my face.

As weeks passed, my mission became clearer: every child deserves the joy of a bookstore experience.

That dream was born from my own childhood, when bookstores simply weren’t accessible. Helping raise curious & kind kids grew from my passion as a homeschool mom who wants children exploring, imagining, and wondering.

Here we are… one month in.

Because this movement is funded by neighbors, parents, grandparents, teachers, and families who choose to shop with us…

Here’s what YOU made possible in just one month:

šŸ“š 293 used books found new homes.

šŸŽ 234 books helped fill teachers’ classroom libraries.

šŸ“– 20 Spanish chapter books donated to our public library.

🧪 Two free STEM events bringing kids together through hands-on learning.

šŸ“· We launched our Camp Snap campaign, encouraging kids to trade a little screen time for a little more adventure.

Every used book.
Every new book.
Every STEM kit & camera you purchased…

It all made this possible.

I’ve spent over a decade serving others— in the ER, and prior with children in foster care. Now I get to serve families in a different way.

Every child who walks through our bookstore reminds me of the little girl I used to be: the one who didn’t get to experience bookstores because they simply weren’t accessible to my family.

I hope she’d be proud.

To say grateful is an understatement.

Thank you for believing in this tiny bookstore with a really big dream! by @wanderingbookstall

Banned Books & Bootlegger Vibes inside a 1913 hotel basement šŸ“š
We closed out Banned Books Week with a night of live music, good drinks, and forbidden literature in the basement of the historic Rogers Hotel.

Built in 1912 and opened in 1913, the Rogers has seen more than a century of Waxahachie history. What better place to gather for a night celebrating stories that refuse to be silenced?

A speakeasy, banned books, live music, and a little rebellion. What a way to end the week. šŸ–¤ @wyrdandwand @rhythmandbrew.coffee We love Waxahachie! taken in Waxahachie, Texas by @wanderingbookstall

New Kid by Jerry Craft follows Jordan Banks, a Black middle schooler navigating life as one of the few students of color at a predominantly white private school. This award-winning graphic novel has faced challenges in schools over its portrayal of race, stereotypes, and systemic bias.

Despite containing no profanity or sexual content, the book has been challenged for the conversations it sparks about race and inequality. Sometimes, the stories that make us think the most are the ones that face the most resistance.

The freedom to read is worth protecting!

✨ Find New Kid and more in our Banned Book Collection tomorrow, 6–8 PM at @rhythmandbrew.coffee, alongside @wyrdandwand! šŸ‘€ stories for password hints to enter the speakeasy by @wanderingbookstall

A Wrinkle in Time* has been challenged for decades and sometimes, for completely opposite reasons.

Some critics argued that the book was too religious, while others argued it was not Christian enough. Its blending of science, fantasy, philosophy, and religion has made it a target from very different perspectives. And that’s part of what makes book challenges so complicated.

A book doesn’t have to align with your beliefs, worldview, or values to have a place on a library shelf. The freedom to read means allowing readers to encounter ideas they may disagree with, question, wrestle with, or simply decide aren’t for them.

Protect the freedom to read! Find A Wrinkle in Time original chapter edition, OR our brand new arrival the graphic novel adaptation, this Sunday 6-8pm at @rhythmandbrew.coffee along with @wyrdandwand ! ā¤ļøā¤ļø by @wanderingbookstall

Did you know The Wonderful Wizard of Oz has a long history of challenges and censorship?

L. Frank Baum’s classic has been challenged for very different reasons over the years including objections to its portrayal of strong female leaders, its treatment of the Wizard as an incompetent fraud, and its depiction of witchcraft and magic.

Reminder: The focus of Banned Books Week isn’t whether you like a particular book or whether you personally want to read it. It’s about what happens when books are removed or banned because someone objects to the messages, ideas, or perspectives inside them. Find a few editions of this book at our Banned Books Night this Sunday 6-8pm at Rhythm and Brew! by @wanderingbookstall

In 1989, a Northern California school district temporarily banned Dr. Seuss’s The Lorax after local logging families argued that the book portrayed the timber industry unfairly and could turn children against forestry.

The controversy became so intense that the logging industry even published a counter-book, The Truax, to present the pro-forestry perspective. The school board unanimously voted to keep The Lorax in the curriculum.

Remember, the focus this week isn’t about defending the books you don’t think should be banned. It’s about how you feel about the books with messages you don’t agree with!

Grab a copy of The Lorax this Sunday Oct 11 6-8pm! We will be at @rhythmandbrew.coffee with @wyrdandwand & our Banned Books collection. Live music, drinks, and a good time!

What happens when a picture book becomes a political threat?

In 1959, The Rabbits’ Wedding by Garth Williams became the center of a censorship controversy in Alabama. The story featured a black rabbit and a white rabbit who fall in love and marry… something Alabama officials claimed promoted ā€œinterracial mixingā€ and ā€œintermarriage.ā€

The response from some officials? Remove it from library shelves.

But Alabama librarian Emily Wheelock Reed refused. She moved it to a restricted shelf rather than destroy it, defending the public’s access to books. The story spread far beyond Alabama, becoming an international example of what can happen when officials decide which ideas are acceptable for the public to read.

This Banned Books Week, we’re taking a look at the books that were challenged, the people who challenged them, and the people who stood up and said:

You don’t have to agree with a book to defend someone’s right to read it. šŸ“–

šŸ“ Come see The Rabbits’ Wedding in person! Find it in our Kids’ Banned Books Collection this Sunday, October 11, from 6–8 PM at @rhythmandbrew.coffee, alongside @wyrdandwand ’s collection of banned & challenged books for adults. by @wanderingbookstall

Over the next week, we’re taking a closer look at six books that have been challenged or banned for young readers. And they’re not all banned for the same reasons.

Some have been challenged over religion. Some over politics or ideology. Some over sexism. Some over violence or language. And some have even faced challenges for reasons that may surprise you like The Lorax, which has been challenged in connection with environmental and economic themes.

You may read one of these books and think, ā€œI completely understand why someone objected to this.ā€ You may read another and think, ā€œHow on earth could anyone want this book removed?ā€ That’s the point. Free expression isn’t really tested by the ideas we already agree with. The harder question is what we do with stories, ideas, and perspectives that we find uncomfortable or deeply disagree with.

Over the next six days, we’ll explore the stories, the challenges, and the reasons behind them. Not to tell you what to think, but to give you the opportunity to think for yourself.

We’ll wrap up the week in person at our Banned Books Event on October 11 at @rhythmandbrew.coffee 6-8pm, where we’ll have all the books we share and more available for purchase alongside @wyrdandwand

šŸ“– Because reading a book isn’t the same thing as agreeing with it.
