Well this is a bit different…

Happy Care Day kids 🫶🏻

Campaigns such as ‘Become the Movement’ are so important in advocating for positive changes for the lives of young people in foster care, through amplifying young people’s voices and changing policies that impact young people for the better.

Statically, care leavers generally experience worse outcomes in life compared to their peers. This has been demonstrated across a number of areas, including involvement with the criminal justice system, less likely to succeed in employment & further education opportunities, struggles with mental health and an increased risk of becoming homeless.

Here are a couple of stats for y’all (bearing in mind that Foster kids make up less than 1% of the population here in the UK;

🎓 Less than 10% of care-experienced young people go to university by age 19. In the borough I come from, it’s less than 1% (can’t find stats on whether this is a representation of those who do, then also graduate too)

🏡 25% of the adult homelessness population is made up by care leavers.

🚔 25% of adult prisoners are made up of those who are care experienced, with nearly 50% of under 21s in contact with the criminal justice system have spent some time in care.

Something in the care system is very, very broken and statistics readily available through the government & charity websites are here to prove it.

Something needs to change.

To my friends here, please do your research and advocate for vulnerable young people where you can.

But to my care kids & care leavers, you’re more than stats and figures. Build a beautiful life for yourself 💛.

Working on opening up more about my care experience. Always happy to engage in conversations around the care system and my experience navigating it. Hoping this finds the right people 🫶🏻

the same girl that would have anxiety attacks even trying to board a train to the airport btw!!🥹

if you’re looking to get into solo hiking and adventures, start local and start small. and make sure to let someone know where you’re going. the one thing that helped me overcome the anxiety was to remind myself that I can stop and come home at anytime x

Pakistan has been the first trip I’ve taken since my brother died last November. Anyone who knows me knows how unusual that is for me, travel and being outdoors has always been a way for me to regulate myself and quiet my loud brain.

Exploring new places has felt too hard without Alex, as he was the one I would share my photos and stories with. I always thought my brother was the coolest person I knew, but turns out he thought the same of me going on all of my adventures.

I feel that I’ve spent the last few months begging for signs that he is still here, that he is not gone forever. I guess that’s a normal part of grief, the bargaining of any form of comfort to ease the void where someone you loved use to be.

Pakistan felt like the first time that that plea to the universe was finally heard and answered. Maybe signs aren’t real, and when we die we are gone and that is simply it. But I like to believe he is around, and that I can see him in the places and people that I love.

So for anyone else grieving, look up at the stars and ask for a sign - maybe you’ll get one. Maybe it is all just coincidental, who knows. I think it’s okay to believe in the signs though. Sending peace to everyone who needs it right now. Grief is hard, be gentle with yourself 🌟

Berlin Marathon Debrief 🏃🏻‍♀️

First time doing a long yappy vlog like this 🥹

Things I loved:
• Berlin’s energy
• how much I got to learn about my own mental strength & determination to finish
• Seeing what the mind and body are capable of

Things I’d do differently:
• train lol
• give myself an extra day in the city to rest & recover. flying home the following evening was HARD, especially with my sprained ankle. I nearly missed my flight because I couldn’t walk (and I’m a fast walker usually)🤣
• bring paracetamol, it seems that you can only buy it in pharmacies in Berlin and not supermarkets and beauty stores like you can in the UK.
• keep race number/ bib visible from the front for race pictures

Things to be prepared for:
• how busy the event is and how crowded running on the course can be at times
• the time and money you will need for the expo

If it’s your first marathon:
• have fun and don’t put pressure on yourself
• run with someone, they’ll keep you going when your body wants to give up
• don’t set out too fast, the energy can be contagious and makes you want to run faster. Don’t blow all your energy in the first 10k when you still have another 32j to go.
• make sure you have practiced running with gels and water & that they agree with your belly
• if you know where your blister zones are, pre plaster them 😎
• don’t be embarrassed to take walking breaks, stop for the loo etc. run your own race bby!

a shout out to my guardian angel, Anne, you truly carried me through those 26 miles. I would not have made it to the finish line without your grit and encouragement 🥹

✨ a big thank you for all of the support over the last 10 months. it hasn’t been easy. but what I’ve learnt is to just show up as you are, and the right people will meet you where you’re at ✨
