Our DIY onboard hot water system!

This mod is one of our most used pieces of gear. Having hot water was something I should have done sooner. We didn’t have this in our first overland build, the two fully converted campervans, or our Tesla build out. Ironically, we have more water capacity in our Xterra than all our past builds combined! Wild! We’re almost done with this setup. It’s taking some time, but we’re waiting on custom fabricated sherpa panels to permanently mount this system.

Our full part list below.

Hot water system:
-Joolca Hottap V2
-Joolca lightweight gas hose

Water tank:
-Trail’d Boondocker 14-gallon tank

Parts/fittings from Amazon, Ace Hardware, and Home Depot:
-1/2” ID x 3/4” OD high pressure braided clear pvc vinyl flexible tube
-1/2” hose barb to 1/2” female home brew water air gas fuel
-All metal RV quick connect spray port with G1/2” & GHT 3/4” adapters, exterior water hook up
-KES All metal RV water inlet replacement, 18/8 stainless steel
-3/8” ID high pressure braided clear vinyl flexible hose
-Beduan 3/8” barb ball valve 304 stainless steel mini shut off valve
-Teflon tape

Shower/privacy room:
-Darche

There’s other misc parts I used to install this to our rig. And likely parts I’m missing. I had to do a lot of trial and error to find the right fit.

Visited Mochi’s time capsule spot for the day. I wanted to stay longer, cook a meal here, and camp. But it was too hazy and smokey. I also wanted to ensure where I buried the time capsule was still there. Very happy it’s exactly the way I left it months ago.

To my bb,

Two years without you feels like a tortuous lifetime. The day I said goodbye was the same day I lost myself.

I got depressed. My health declined. There were nights I thought about leaving this world too, just to stop the distance between us from getting any bigger. I couldn’t go out and explore without something triggering a memory of you. Every trail, parking spot, stretch of road we’d done together turned into a landmine I didn’t see coming until it hit.

My relationship with money changed too. Everything I had spent and all available resources I had couldn’t save you. I don’t think I’ve fully made peace with that. I’m not sure I ever will. I just know I’ve stopped needing to solve it to keep living.

I think about that day in the hospital. That last look. I held you in my arms and you used the very last ounce of whatever you had left to turn your head and find my eyes. I saw it flicker. I knew what it meant. And I refused to accept it anyway, because accepting it meant it was real, and I wasn’t ready for real.

I know this isn’t how you wanted me to live afterward. You taught and gave me too much for me to waste it. Unconditional love. Living in the moment. Finding joy in the simplest, smallest things. Our adventures. You were there for every milestone, every trauma I went through, no exceptions, no bad timing, no conditions. You were my constant when nothing else was constant. You were my copilot in life.

It took me a while to get here. But I want to celebrate your life.

For two years I’ve been retracing our path. I’ve spread your ashes and your fur in every spot that meant something, the places we loved, the places we lived, the places that marked us. I buried a time capsule at the one that mattered most, something for us to find again someday. And I found a way to keep you physically with me too, a piece of you woven into a bead on my wrist, right next to all the other places I’ve been since and will continue to add. And a tattoo of you on my arm that feels like you’re sitting next to me.

Till the day I see you again, I find comfort knowing you’re my angel now.

You always were.

Olympic National Park road trip!

Two years ago, I had planned this tripped with Mochi for a solo bachelors party. That never happened. I had to unexpectedly say goodbye to her instead.

This has been a healing process visiting all the places we were suppose to explore together. It’s also a reminder to keep living the life we built and to keep chasing adventures she would have loved 🐾

With this trip, I’ve completed the entire Pacific Coast Hwy 1 and Hwy 101.

DIY onboard hot water system 🔥

Finally got our onboard water system to work! Went through a series of trial and error to get this to function. The crazy thing is, our Xterra has more water storage than our campervan build combined. It also has hot water, something we didn’t have in our campervan as well! So stoke on this! I’ve been eyeing the @joolcaco hottap and the spare tire water tank from @trailedonline for years!

This is turning into a proper expedition rig!

Thanks Brian for meeting and swapping out the 7 gallon for the 14 gallon water tank!!

Hard to beat this location!

Idk what this is called, but the roof top tents 360 degree view + sky view is very nice! We slept with just the mesh screen. It’s a different feeling sleeping with the sounds of the river while star gazing and waking up to this view!
