FYI: Mango Sticky Rice season in Thailand usually peaks in summer (March to May). Even when mangoes are out of season, Thailand’s mangoes are still noticeably sweeter than what you’ll find in the US (because of the hot weather).
In my opinion, you shouldn’t get Mango Sticky Rice off‑season in the US. It’s worth waiting until summer for the real experience.

This is Wanjai. I met her in Bangkok.

A leisurely walk through Songwat, exploring cafes and local stores tucked in narrow alleys, led me to her cafe.

Her cafe special? Mango sticky rice.
She sliced and cubed the mangoes deftly while chatting with me. This rustic cafe with thumping music is inviting. I perch myself on a chair, and wait for my order. We get talking. Her mother has been running a cafe for 46 years and Wanjai assisted her for many years before venturing out on her own. Her cafe is young - a little over 2 years , she smiles.

We try to hold a conversation - I can’t speak Thai and she struggles with English- smiles and gestures get us through.

She works all days of the week. “I am tired. I need a break. But I have to work. I love my work.” She spends her day choosing and slicing the mangoes.
I smile, “Come to India.” Her eyes crinkle, “Bombay? I want to .”
Her son helps her run the cafe. She calls him, he stops by to say a brief hello, and nods respectfully before rushing to the till. There’s a huge queue of people waiting to be served.

The sweetness of the juicy luscious mango pairs well with the sticky, salty, moist, rice and the sweet coconut milk just holds it together. It’s yum, I tell her. She accepts the compliment with a wide smile. “Come again. We talk more. “
“Picture?” I ask. She steps out and as we pose, I spot an infant propped up in a pram. His father feeds him a small crushed piece of mango and the toothless baby suckles and drools. Wanjai and I chuckle and pinch our fingers and thumb to forma small finger heart.
I capture the picture in my camera but the moment we shared? That I hold in my heart.

Do stop by her cafe in Songwat in Bangkok whenever you go there. You will love it.
And do say a hi for me to Wanjai ❤️
