Wasatch Community Gardens’ Love Local Winter Market is back on Saturday, December 5, 2026, from 12–6 PM! Held at the Wasatch Community Gardens Campus (629 E 800 S, SLC), this outdoor market is a celebration of local food, local makers, and community.

Sip on hot tea and mulled wine while you shop from 30+ small, local businesses with a focus on food, gardening, nature, and locally sourced materials.

Admission is $5 at the gate, and children 5 and under are free. Your ticket helps us cover the cost of heat lamps to keep the outdoor market cozy, keeps vendor fees low and accessible for smaller and up-and-coming businesses, and supports our community programming and mission.

Whether you’re doing your holiday shopping, looking for something special, or just want to spend an afternoon under the twinkly lights, we hope you’ll join us to support small, local businesses and celebrate community.

The Green Team at City Farm is working on seed saving this week. For these yellow eggplants, the process starts with scooping out the seeds, adding water to help separate them, and then drying the seeds for storage.

Once dried, these eggplant seeds will go to our partner, @snakeriverseedcoop, to be sold with other regionally adapted varieties.

The Green Team is also prepping beds for winter by planting cover crops and garlic. taken in Salt Lake City, Utah by @wasatchcommunitygardens

How can students turn their interests into meaningful action? That question was at the heart of today’s Fall Impact Summit, hosted by Rowland Hall’s Center for Community Impact. Upper School students explored topics ranging from housing affordability and environmental justice to civic engagement and the power of storytelling through breakout sessions led by community partners, faculty, and fellow students. They also connected with local organizations to discover opportunities to get involved. With “Designing for Impact” as this fall’s theme, today’s conversations and connections will inspire research and community engagement projects that students will share at the next Impact Summit in April. taken in Rowland Hall by @wasatchcommunitygardens

Putting your garden to bed for winter!

After you clean up your garden beds by removing diseased plants and aggressive weeds (while leaving disease-free stems, hollow stalks, and native seed heads standing for winter habitat), you can start enriching and protecting your soil for the season ahead.

Add compost: Spread a 1-inch layer of finished compost across your garden beds to feed beneficial soil microbes over the winter months. If you haven’t tested your soil’s phosphorus levels, apply only ¼”.

Cover bare soil: Add a 2–3-inch layer of organic material like shredded fallen leaves or clean straw to help prevent erosion.

Plant a cover crop: Sow cover crops in empty vegetable patches to fix nitrogen, build organic matter, and prevent topsoil compaction from winter storms. by @wasatchcommunitygardens

Why save seeds? Saving seeds from plants that thrive in your garden helps you grow well-adapted varieties year after year. It also helps preserve rare crops, maintain genetic diversity, protect food traditions, and support food sovereignty.

Thanks to everyone who joined us and to Snake River Seed Cooperative for sharing their seed-saving knowledge with us. by @wasatchcommunitygardens
