If you have a mean spirit, this is not the community for you. If you can’t find humor in everyday situations, this is not the community for you. If you don’t like news that’s reported about DC that’s reposted onto our accounts, this is not the community for you.

Instead of tearing us down if you haven’t seen a story posted, maybe try sending us a DM; we can’t be everywhere at all times.

“D.C.’s Democratic nominee for Congress, Robert White, announced his resignation fron the D.C. Council on Monday in order to be eligible to take Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton’s office.

White’s office announced his intent to resign last Thursday.

Earlier this week, a recent opinion by the D.C. attorney general said White must resign in order to eligible.

A little-known law from 1970 that lays out the qualifications for the office clearly states the candidate can hold no other paid public office on the date of his election.

The attorney general’s office told White that in order for him to qualify, he must resign his Council seat before Election Day on Tuesday, City Cast DC first reported.“

“A utility company spokesperson said a “developing” situation at a Pepco substation has left about 1,100 customers without power in Northwest D.C. and canceled morning classes at The George Washington University Monday.

There’s no word yet on when power might be restored. A spokesperson for Pepco said the outage was caused by “an event at our I Street Substation in the Foggy Bottom area of the District.”

“Pepco crews are on site assessing conditions and are working safely and as quickly as possible to restore power. At this time, the cause of the event remains under investigation,” the spokesperson wrote in an email.

In an update posted to social media just before 1 p.m., Pepco said there’s “no indication of foul play at this time.”

Pepco asked that people stay away from the work areas “for their safety.””

“DC Water announced Friday that major work has begun to rebuild a section of the historic C&O Canal that was used as a temporary bypass for wastewater after a sewage pipe collapsed earlier this year.

A section of the 54-mile Potomac Inceptor sewage line collapsed Jan. 19. While crews worked on emergency repairs, the canal carried a total of two billion gallons of wastewater. The repairs were completed March 14.

However, using the canal as a bypass caused lasting damage to it. DC Water said the work, which it is doing in partnership with the National Park Service, is meant to restore the canal to its original condition.

One of the first things DC Water said crews had to do was remove 8,500 tons of topsoil in order to get rid of what remained of the sewage that had flowed through the canal.

“That’s why we removed so much soil, to remove the soil that was impacted by the wastewater flow,” said Matt Brown, Interim General Manager for DC Water, at a press conference Friday.”

“In what appears to be a first for D.C., the region’s largest charitable foundation is courting donors for a $2 million fund to support and shape the transition of presumptive mayor-elect Janeese Lewis George. The pool would in part steer philanthropic money toward training the next administration’s appointees. It would also provide financial resources to nonprofits whose leaders leave to join Lewis George’s cabinet, according to a document reviewed by City Cast DC.
The document — identified as a “concept note” — began circulating earlier this month to leaders in the philanthropic community for feedback. It proposes a a limited-time fund to support the mayor’s transition and pay for at least three possible priorities: “a governing institute for new leadership,” “nonprofit leadership transition support,” and “home rule defense capacity.”
The Greater Washington Community Foundation, which distributes grants and funds to regional nonprofits, will house the initiative — known as the People First D.C. Fund. The Community Foundation is billing the fundraising effort as an opportunity for donors to have “a short but real opportunity to help the incoming administration start strong and to make sure DC’s nonprofit and community infrastructure, the organizations closest to residents, has a seat at the table from day one.””

“It was the presence of glue sticks on the back-to-school list that caused Anita Thurakal to grow concerned.

Her son had been looking forward to another year at Capitol Hill Montessori at Logan, the only dedicated Montessori institution run by D.C. Public Schools, which typically relied on specific Montessori materials. So the unusually long back-to-school list, filled with crayons, pencils and other items traditionally found in a conventional classroom, made her take notice.

Thurakal and other parents’ concerns have only solidified in recent months, with a growing number expressing frustration at what they describe as a sudden shift in curriculum — one that is moving away from the Montessori model and more closely resembles a traditional public school.

Multiple parents told The Washington Sun that they feel both betrayed over the change in approach and powerless to stop it — and that after seeking out a Montessori education for their children, they’re only receiving a modified version, at best.

“We built our community here,” Thurakal told The Sun in an interview, her voice breaking. “It makes me really sad that we potentially have to leave this because they’ve just destroyed it.”“
