Book Idea No. 4: Charles Ray, Plank Piece l-ll (1973).

In the photographs, rough-grained boards are leaned against the wall. The insertion of Ray's body into the piece puts a spin on the artist as an object, erasing the distance between the viewer and the artist. Yet, in the images, Ray is supported only by the board and wall. He does not break any rules of minimalism other than inserting himself performatively into the sculpture. by @wastedbooks

In the early 1980s, Lorraine O'Grady created the persona of Mlle Bourgeoise Noire, who invaded art openings wearing a gown and a cape made of 180 pairs of white gloves, first giving away flowers, then beating herself with a white studded whip, which she often referred to as, "the whip-that-made-the-plantations-move." While doing this, she would often shout in protest poems railing against a segregated art world that excluded black individuals from the world of mainstream art, and which she perceived as not looking beyond a small circle of friends. by @wastedbooks

Wasted Books is absolutely thrilled to learn that we have been selected for an Alternative Exposure grant. We’re deeply grateful for Southern Exposure's confidence in our work and excited about what this support will make possible. Southern Exposure's investment makes it possible for us to revive and share a vital piece of San Francisco’s artistic legacy.

More to come.

Margaret Tedesco's altered caption and plagiarized photographs as they appear in Copy No. 2.

Back in the day (Margaret's words), I met Margaret in her gallery apartment during an exhibition of Christine Choi's work.

Later, Heather Watson and I used her gallery apartment as a meeting place to discuss plans for Plain Wrap Press, my first publishing project.

When Margaret visited us last year at the San Francisco Art Book Fair, she expressed surprise at how high-brow our magazine seemed. We all laughed.

She supported me throughout, and I'll miss how easy it was to talk to her.
