Lt. Col Robert H Springer was an US Air Force pilot with quite an impressive career. He flew 36 B-17 missions over Germany between 1944 and 1945. After the war he stayed in the Air Force, and was later stationed in Germany. While there he purchased a Rolex 6542 GMT on base at a PX in 1958.

The first picture is from 1965 towards the end of his Air Force career. Post Air Force, He went on to work at Edwards Air Force Base, assigned to the test flight development section. The watch was on his everyday until he passed away in 2013 at the age of 89 years old. I was sent his picture and story from his grandson, and follower of this account. I sincerely hope that the watch was passed down, and I would love to know how much he paid in 1958 for such an incredible watch.

Rear Admiral Max G. “Pepper” McCoy, Jr. is one of the U.S. Navy’s most accomplished naval aviators. A native of Winter Springs, Florida, he graduated from the Naval Academy in 1991 and later earned his wings in 1994. His operational flying career centered on the F/A-18 Hornet and Super Hornet community. He flew with Strike Fighter Squadrons VFA-151 and VFA-136, completing multiple deployments aboard USS Constellation, USS George Washington, and USS Nimitz.

McCoy later commanded VFA-86 and Carrier Air Wing TWO (CVW-2), leading strike-fighter operations from carrier decks. A TOPGUN graduate, he served as a strike-fighter tactics instructor at Strike Fighter Weapons School. He was later selected as a demonstration pilot with the Blue Angels.

As the Navy transitioned to fifth-generation fighters, he became the first commodore of the Joint Strike Fighter Wing at NAS Lemoore. McCoy has accumulated an insane 5,500 flight hours and earned numerous personal awards including the Tailhook Association’s 2023 Tailhooker of the Year.

He has done a solid job hiding his timepieces in most photos. Recently, however, he was pictured wearing a Breitling Emergency during the Blue Angel’s change of command ceremony. It’s certainly an appropriate tool watch for a career naval aviator.

The IWC Pilot’s Venturer Vertical Drive made its grand debut last week at Watches and Wonders 2026 in Geneva, marking a bold new chapter for the Swiss watchmaker. This timepiece is IWC’s first mechanical tool watch engineered and certified from the ground up for human spaceflight.
At its core is the innovative patent-pending Vertical Drive system. It has a crownless design where a rotating bezel and rocker switch control winding, time-setting, and GMT functions. The mechanism uses a vertical clutch to transmit motion to the movement, allowing effortless operation even while wearing bulky space-suit gloves. This radical rethinking of ergonomics addresses the unique challenges of zero-gravity and extreme environments, from temperature swings to vibrations.
In my opinion it has a sleek, futuristic aesthetic. Built with a matte black dial, 24-hour scale for mission timing, and a mix of lightweight white zirconium oxide ceramic case and Ceratanium components for maximum durability and corrosion resistance. It houses the new IWC Calibre 32722 automatic movement with a 120-hour power reserve and integrated GMT. A white rubber strap has a very the modern feel.

With its clean lines, high-tech materials, and no-nonsense functionality, the Venturer Vertical Drive looks like something designed for SpaceX, and ready for the next era of private space exploration. Priced around $28,200, it bridges IWC’s 90-year aviation heritage with the demands of orbital life, proving that precision timing has truly left the atmosphere.

Maha Vajiralongkorn, King Rama X of Thailand, has maintained a lifelong connection to aviation since joining the Thai military in 1975. Educated at the Royal Military College in Duntroon, Australia, he graduated in 1976 and earned qualifications as a fixed-wing and helicopter pilot. His training included fixed-wing flight on the SIAI-Marchetti SF 260, utility and gunship courses on Bell UH-1H and UH-1N helicopters, and advanced fighter instruction on the Northrop F-5 and F-16. He holds the rank of Field Marshal in the Royal Thai Army, Admiral of the Fleet in the Navy, and Marshal of the Royal Thai Air Force. In the 1970s he flew combat-support missions against communist insurgents, later earning an Airline Transport Pilot Licence and certification on the Boeing 737-400.

Aviation remains central to his public image. In April 2025, during Thailand’s state visit to Bhutan, King Vajiralongkorn and Queen Suthida personally piloted the royal Boeing 737-800. The King took the captain’s seat while the Queen served as co-pilot, executing the demanding approach and landing at Paro International Airport, and later flying the return leg. The flight underscored the couple’s shared pilot credentials and drew international attention for its rarity among world leaders.

Public images of the King wearing a wristwatch are strikingly limited. Yet photographs from his years as Crown Prince show him sporting what appears to be a Rolex Daytona “Big Red” 6293.

Jean-Louis Chatelain dedicated his entire professional life to Air France. He began his airline career in 1970 as a co-pilot on the Boeing 707, honing his skills on long-haul routes and later advancing through the airline’s fleet. A lifelong dream, however, was to fly the iconic Concorde. Chatelain finally achieved that ambition in December 2001, taking the left seat as captain during the supersonic jet’s final years of service.

Between 2001 and 2003 he logged approximately 400 hours on Concorde, including 260 supersonic hours, and completed 92 single supersonic crossings of the North Atlantic. For Chatelain, piloting the delta-winged Mach 2 airliner was unlike any other aircraft. The graceful takeoff rotation, the rapid climb through the sound barrier, and the serene cruise at the edge of space offered a unique blend of precision engineering and pure exhilaration. He also served on the technical investigation committee following the tragic 2000 crash of Air France Flight 4590, helping ensure the fleet’s safe return to service.

Today Chatelain remains one of the most respected voices on Concorde’s legacy. He was recently featured by Breitling in a promotional campaign for the limited-edition Navitimer B01 Chronograph 43 Tribute to Concorde. In the video series, the former captain appears wearing the striking blue-dial timepiece while sharing firsthand insights into what it felt like to command the world’s fastest passenger jet.

Yesterday American Airlines celebrated its 100th anniversary. The carrier traces its roots to April 15, 1926 when it began as a small airmail operation flying the Chicago to St. Louis route. Over the decades it evolved into one of the world’s largest airlines, introducing the first DC-3 passenger service, pioneering jet travel, launching the AAdvantage frequent-flyer program, and expanding globally through mergers and alliances. Today it carries more than 200 million passengers annually as a flagship member of the oneworld alliance.

To mark the centennial anniversary, an American Airlines Pilot Group partnered with Swiss watchmaker Breitling on a limited-edition trio of aviation inspired watches that blend the airline’s heritage with Breitling’s legendary precision. The collection is led by the Chronomat GMT, which proudly displays the American Airlines logo at 9 o’clock, a red GMT hand with arrow tip, and the airline’s signature colors on the dial. It is joined by a light blue dial Navitimer; Breitling’s iconic pilot’s chronograph with its slide-rule bezel. Interestingly, the 3rd option is a Super Ocean diver’s watch. Just further proof that any watch can be a pilot’s watch. All three pieces celebrate a century of flight, reliability, and exploration, giving pilots and aircrew a wearable piece of American Airlines history.

Maj. Brandon “Crime” Maxson serves as the Thunderbird 3, Right Wing Pilot for the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds demonstration team. Having previously served as Thunderbird 8, the team’s Advance Pilot and Narrator.
A highly experienced F-16 Fighting Falcon pilot, Maxson joined the elite squadron after serving as Director of Staff for the 63rd Fighter Squadron at Luke Air Force Base, Arizona, where he trained and mentored new F-16 pilots. With over 1,420 flying hours primarily in the F-16 and F-35, he has developed exceptional skills in precision formation flying, high-G maneuvering, and situational awareness that are critical for Thunderbird performances.
As Thunderbird 8, Maxson flew ahead of the main formation to perform site surveys, coordinate with airshow organizers, capture imagery, and serve as the public narrator during demonstrations. In his current role he flies at high speeds while enduring intense G-forces, often exceeding 9G, to support the team’s signature diamond and delta formations.
Maxson’s selection to the Thunderbirds highlights years of operational fighter experience and leadership within the F-16 community. He describes the thrill of Thunderbird flying as “a blast every single time.”
In his Thunderbird announcement picture from 2024 he is wearing what I believe is a Breitling Aerospace Evo F-16 edition, but I could be wrong. At this point I almost exclusively associate the Aerospace Evo with guys that strap into fast movers…

I am a little late to the game, but the Artemis II mission did a great job of captivating the world with its mission around the moon and safely returning home last week. The watches used for the mission also seemed to have caught a lot of attention online. I posted about Astronauts Reid Wiseman’s Speedy, X-33, and Superocean and also posted about Victor Glovers Custom Unit Watch that seemed to be the only watch he ever wore….until this mission.

The entire crew appears to have been provided Breitling Cosmonauts and Omega X-33 Gen 2’s for the mission. Capt Glover also snuck up an Omega Speedmaster 3861 that he put on when orbiting the moon. A nice nod to those that came before him if you ask me. It’s interesting that he left his VFA-34 Unit watch back here while on the trip.

Wiseman commented on a @niccoloy post saying “ People always wonder why astronauts wear so many watches....if you look at the Speedy X33 it is on GMT and I outside my pressure suit. Launch teams build their launch window cadence of GMT so I needed that. Breitling Cosmo is on MET, or mission elapsed time. I only used MET onboard and the 24 hour face was extremely helpful. A few of my crewmates also wore Speedmasters with local Houston time to track family timezone.”

Very cool insight and excited to see what NASA does next.

The commemorative IWC Pilot’s Watch Mark XX for United Airlines’ 100th anniversary which is today. The first order was delivered to the initial buyers this March. Unveiled to mark United’s milestone this limited-edition timepiece was meticulously developed over two years by active United Airlines pilots working hand-in-hand with IWC Schaffhausen and the airline itself. The result is a highly personal and classy watch available only to United Airlines employees.

The watch features the United Airlines globe logo at the 6 o’clock, a subtle gold second hand, and a custom engraved case back. It comes with both a metal bracelet and navy blue rubber strap.

IWC’s profound connection to aviation dates back over eight decades. In the 1930s, the brand crafted early pilot watches, followed by the iconic Big Pilot’s Watch supplied to the German Luftwaffe in 1940. The post-war era brought the legendary Mark 11 in 1948, commissioned by the British Royal Air Force as a precise, legible navigator’s tool. This spawned the enduring Mark series: evolving through the Mark XII (1993), XV, XVI, XVII, and XVIII, each iteration refined the formula of simplicity, robustness, and anti-magnetic protection via soft-iron inner cases.

The Mark XX, launched in 2022, represents the pinnacle of this lineage. Housed in a versatile 40mm stainless steel case, it features IWC’s in-house Calibre 32111 automatic movement with a impressive 120-hour power reserve, 100-meter water resistance, and enhanced ergonomics for everyday wear. This United Airlines edition blends that Swiss mastery with symbolic details, paying homage to the pilots who navigate the skies daily and to IWC’s legacy as a partner to aviators worldwide.

Ayrton Senna is widely regarded as one of the greatest drivers in Formula One history. Turns out he was also a pilot. He made his F1 debut in 1984 with Toleman, stunning the world with a near-victory at Monaco in wet conditions. Moving to Lotus in 1985, he secured his first Grand Prix win in Portugal and earned a reputation for blistering qualifying speed, claiming 16 poles in three seasons. In 1988 he joined McLaren and won his first world championship with eight victories. He claimed further titles in 1990 and 1991, amassing 41 Grand Prix wins and a record 65 pole positions by the time of his tragic death at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix.

Beyond the racetrack, Senna’s greatest personal passion was aviation. He had been fascinated by flight since childhood and spent many peaceful hours in Brazil building and piloting intricate radio-controlled model airplanes, applying the same precision and concentration he showed in Formula One. He obtained his private pilot’s license and regularly flew several aircraft, including an Embraer EMB-110 Bandeirante turboprop and a British Aerospace BAe-125 business jet, often taking the controls himself after race weekends. He also piloted his own helicopter between homes in Brazil. In 1989, the Brazilian Air Force gave him the opportunity to fly a Mirage III fighter jet.

Senna was rarely seen without his favourite timepiece: the TAG Heuer S/el chronograph, reference S25.706C. While definitely not a “pilot’s watch” and certainly a 90’s design, it became his signature accessory throughout his championship-winning years even in the cockpit.

Frank Borman was a NASA astronaut, Air Force colonel, and aviation executive whose career spanned military service, pioneering spaceflight, and corporate leadership.

He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1950 and was commissioned in the U.S. Air Force. His early career included service as a fighter pilot with the 44th Fighter Bomber Squadron in the Philippines. After earning a Master’s in aeronautical engineering from Caltech in 1957, he became an experimental test pilot and instructor at the Air Force Aerospace Research Pilots School.

Selected in NASA’s second astronaut group in 1962, Borman flew two historic missions. In December 1965, he commanded Gemini 7, enduring a record-breaking 14 days in orbit with Jim Lovell, the longest spaceflight at the time, and achieved the first space rendezvous with Gemini 6.

Borman’s most famous achievement came as commander of Apollo 8 in December 1968. With Lovell and William Anders, he led the first human mission to leave Earth’s orbit and circle the Moon, orbiting it 10 times, capturing the iconic Earthrise photo, and broadcasting a Christmas Eve message from lunar orbit.

Retiring from NASA and the Air Force in 1970 as a colonel, Borman transitioned to the private sector, joining Eastern Air Lines as senior vice president for operations. He rose to CEO and chairman (1975–1986), guiding the airline through challenges in a deregulated industry and achieving profitability in several years before its eventual sale.

Borman appears to have been a Rolex fan. The earliest NASA pictures show him wearing what appears to be a Rolex OP. In 1966, he began wearing a Rolex GMT Master with a Pepsi bezel and custom dial with the West Point crest at the 9 o’clock position (although no discernible pictures of the dial have been found). It is believed he was gifted the watch by West Point. While the CEO of Eastern Airlines he was pictured wearing a 2-tone Rolex Datejust 1601. Throughout his entire career he had a crown on his wrist.

I was sent a picture of two pilots rocking the same watch, a Rolex Explorer II, on the flight deck and thought that it was worth sharing.

The Rolex Explorer II “Polar” is a tool watch designed for extreme environments. Its crisp white dial contrasts with bold black markers and hands for outstanding legibility, even in low light or high-vibration conditions. The distinctive orange arrow-shaped 24-hour hand GMT hand paired with a fixed engraved bezel, allows clear distinction between day and night, making it invaluable in perpetual light/darkness scenarios like polar expeditions or long-haul flights crossing multiple time zones.

Though not specifically engineered as a pilot’s watch (unlike the GMT-Master II), many aviators and travelers appreciate its practical GMT-style functionality for tracking home time or UTC while adjusting local time. Understated yet capable, the Polar serves as an excellent aviation companion for those who value clarity and durability over specialized flair.
