It’s been two weeks since returning from the Brazilian Amazon, an experience made possibly by @labverde — through the Labsonora sonic arts residency.

In anticipation, I found myself hearing @haleymellin’s voice waxing poetic about how forests are truly atmospheric ecosystems that come from the sky. A few days before arriving, we heard, “You don’t arrive in the Amazon; you dive into the Amazon.”

The word transformative is too reductive of a term to describe what unfolded here. As I continue processing, I’ll note I turned from day to night and land to water. Arriving and returning has been alchemical.

Thank you @christiaanbraga for illuminating my good side, and being the eyes and ears of the forest. We love you. by @watchingwhitney

If you’ve talked to me in the last two weeks, it’s probably felt like I’m caught in between worlds. I think that’s an accurate reflection no matter what angle you approach it from.

I used to hide in art as a kid and across adulthood, hiding in performance, production, exhibition reviews. Now there’s nowhere to hide except in blocks of time that define moments of passage.

Thanks to @labverde for facilitating my first official experience at an arts residency and reigniting a lifelong love affair with sound. Thanks to @christiaanbraga for capturing my good sides. Thanks to all of you along the way who made these few days in the forest what they were and what they will continue to be.

💌 You can participate in an adapted version of my first solo installation hosted in the Amazon with @labverde through the latest Climate House Letters @climatehouse.us — climatehouseus.substack.com — Letter No. 20 by @watchingwhitney

THE BEEF CONDITION
A participatory sound installation
Brazilian Amazon, 2026

Developed at the Labsonora residency hosted by @labverde, this work invites participants to step inside a life-sized cow structure on the forest floor, sit, listen to the forest as it records itself, and read aloud a scripted text tracing the global beef supply chain.

Beef is the single largest driver of deforestation worldwide, with the majority of cattle-driven forest loss concentrated in Brazil.

The installation stages that system as something to be entered, spoken, and located from within—
a system so total it begins to feel like atmosphere.

A participatory version of this work has been adapted for a remote practice is published today via Climate House Letters on Substack (@climatehouse.us).
