Announcing “Here, where we are” — a WAVA exhibition initiated by Kulturfonds Frankfurt RheinMain with eight new virtual interventions sprawling across the public space of the Main-Taunus district.

On the occasion of the World Design Capital 2026 in Frankfurt am Main and the surrounding region, eight site-specific AR installations by eleven international artists expand public space across several municipalities in the Main-Taunus-Kreis. “Hier, wo wir sind – virtuelle Kunst um’s Eck” examines public space in the hybrid age and explores how virtual interventions can change the ways we interact with and perceive our surroundings by bringing new perspectives, narratives, and historical references to light.

Compromise / B’s Theme
Thủy Tiên Nguyễn and Wanwen Zhang

Alter Kurpark
Bad Soden am Taunus

Thủy Tiên Nguyễn and Wanwen Zhang draw inspiration from the East Asian tales of the Liaozhai Zhiyi – a manuscript of stories in which love transcends social and supernatural boundaries. In the old Kurpark, figures from these mythologies appear: spirits disguised as humans and the scholars who fall in love with them, in the form of two animated sculptures that appear by a fountain and across the pond. The accompanying soundscapes are generated by instruments that utilize water, pressure, and gravity – the waterphone and water gong. The works transform the idyllic setting into a meeting place of collective storytelling, where the park’s underground water sources and healing fountains become symbols of concealed truths and mysterious encounters.

Real-time Fogging (Live Edition)
Alona Rodeh

Former Phrix cellulose and paper factory
Kirschgrabenstraße 9, 65795
Hattersheim am Main

With “Real-time Fogging (Live Edition)” in Hattersheim, Rodeh engages with the history of the former Phrix cellulose and paper factory, once owned by the Jewish Offenheimer family, who were forced into exile in 1938. Her work depicts a black-and-white brick wall that collapses and rebuilds itself over and over again. The moment of destruction itself is pixelated and appears to elude the viewer’s gaze. Referencing military and media tactics of concealment – walls of fog and pixelation obscure what must not be seen – the work functions as a monument reflecting the limitations of remembrance and the representation of violence.

Migratory Birds
Tamara Grčić

Landratsamt
Am Kreishaus 1 - 5 65719
Hofheim

Migratory Birds disrupt the bureaucratic structures within the imposing architecture of the Kreishaus, the district building in Hofheim: cranes appear in the courtyard, unfolding across the space in a shared soar. In the background, William Shakespeare’s The Stranger’s Case is performed, where Thomas More calms a mob rioting against immigrants in 1517 London by asking them to imagine being refugees themselves, banished and treated with the same cruelty they show to the “strangers”. The cranes’ movements redefine the space — and the movements of visitors, their upward glances, become part of a shared choreography of gathering.

Text: The Stranger’s Case, from Sir Thomas More (1591-3), by William Shakespeare
Read by Wolfram Koch

3D design and motion: Remko Van der Auwera.

This is one of those if you know where to look moments :)

I’m already out of Berlin, so I didn’t get to spend as much time at this year’s Art Week as I would have liked. But because I’m always interested in innovative ways of experiencing art, I had to make a few quick rounds with @wava__ar and @bienalsaopaulo around the city of Berlin.

Through Apparitions, works from the 36th São Paulo Biennial appear as digital extensions in selected locations around the world, inviting you to encounter art through your phone and the spaces around you. I love how they’ve quietly taken over Art Week, with works by artists including Adama Delphine Fawundu, Akinbode Akinbiyi, Ming Smith, Andrew Roberts and more appearing in unexpected places.

Something different, forward thinking, away from the usual at #berlinartweek. Experiencing art across borders, while also challenging the status quo of how and where we encounter it.

Maybe we do a walk soon? Would be cool, @benlw. Learn more on prazzlearts.com by @wava__ar

»Uplifting Instruction« (2026) by William Forsythe

The new work ‘»Uplifting Instruction« by @william_forsythe_ at @zkmkarlsruhe invites you to discover a message in the virtual world.

The app-based augmented reality (AR) installation, premiered during the opening of the Venice Biennale in April 2026, features four airplanes flying across the sky above the ZKM, each towing a black banner. Together, the banners form an instruction for action. To read the message in its entirety, viewers must move and follow the airplanes with their smartphone screens.

Adjani Okpu-Egbe / Premonition of Ngarbuh

Wilhelmstraße 92, Berlin
Site of the Berlin Conference 1884-5

Premonition of Ngarbuh (2020-2024), produced in response to the 2020 Ngarbuh massacre in Cameroon, confronts the horrors of state-sanctioned violence,in which women and children bear the brunt while the “international community” remains silent.

Harrowing and emotionally unflinching, the depiction of ghost-like figures flanked by a scorched landscape – with children playing a jump rope game surrounded by strange animals – evokes a haunting sense of insecurity. The shelved objects speak to loss, spiritual desecration, and resilience. In documenting this tragic failure of decolonial processes and the forgotten armed conflict that has engulfed the English-speaking regions of Cameroon since 2016, Okpu-Egbe echoes Picasso’s Guernica (1937) and makes an urgent contribution to art history – a gesture that answers the call for public intellectualism.

Displayed alongside is An Allegorical Conglomeration of Origins and Inevitabilities (2024), rooted in envisioning Black futures. Its dense layering – a tapestry of autobiographical content foundational to the artist’s storytelling – includes symbols such as vine-bearing lemons, braids, clocks, and lanterns. These elements meditate on inevitabilities intended to shape what the artist describes as “Black Consciousness in Black Futures” (BCBF).

Text by Billy Fowo in collaboration with the artist.

The Opel Bridge was built over the River Main to facilitate the quicker transport of workers from Flörsheim to the Opel automobile factory in Rüsselsheim. The bridge and factory stand as infrastructural examples of Germany’s industrialization and the role of the automobile in the reorganization of the economy and modern life. Lucas LaRochelle’s Riding High Above Ground responds to this history by drawing a parallel between industrialization and the growing impact of artificial intelligence on labour, infrastructure and social life. The installation extracts the cars that appear in Sometimes I Forget What Feeling Felt Like Because I Was Never There When It Happened, a film created using QT.bot, a machine learning model trained on submissions to Queering the Map and their corresponding Street View imagery, and places them beneath the bridge

Lucas LaRochelle is a designer and researcher whose work is concerned with queer and trans digital cultures, community-based archiving, and artificial intelligence. They are the founder of Queering The Map, a community generated counter-mapping platform for digitally archiving LGBTQ2IA+ experience in relation to physical space.

Join us for the final opening of “Hier, wo wir sind – Digitale Kunst um’s Eck” this Friday in Flörsheim am Main.
