All summer, women of military service, veterans, and families of military experience have been showing up with us in Virginia Beach.

Around work schedules. Around storms. Around life.

And somehow, they keep coming back.

Every Thursday looks a little different, but somewhere between surfing, friendship, shared experience, and a few hours outside together, it feels like we all leave a little better than we came.

This week, we wanted to open that experience up.

We invited our Third Wave participants to bring someone who feels like family, whether they were born into it, married into it, chose it somewhere along the way, or simply became it.

The ocean definitely brought a little more energy than we would’ve ordered for Family Day. The conditions were challenging for beginner surfing, but the day became something pretty special anyway.

We met Nan, a military spouse of more than 30 years.

We watched Lenora, who served in the military, share the day with her daughter Liliana, marine biologist in the making and, according to us, future professional surfer.

And we talked with Diane’s mom while she stood on the beach taking pictures of her adult daughter charging through rough current and going after waves for two hours.

And this little reminder that maybe family inclusion matters because the people who have known us in one version of our lives get to witness us experience ourselves in a new one.

We are so grateful to anthony (whose insta we cannot find) we’re coming out and taking some photos for us, 📷 it means so much to us to be able to share third wave with community as we continue to grow as a program into a nonprofit..

Sound healing and surf therapy have put waves into our lives in ways we’re still learning how to explain.

Sometimes it’s therapeutic. Sometimes it’s connection. Sometimes it’s simply something that helps bring you back into the present when anxiety is already there.

And somewhere in all of that, @wavesofchangecoalition keeps creating pathways between these modalities, mental health support, and the people who might need another way in.

Because the first touch point matters.

Creating more ways in. More places to connect. More opportunities to experience support in a way that meets people where they actually are.

When we first started bringing Third Wave to life, we knew we wanted to create something that integrates mental health, somatic wellness + real human connection together.

And this summer, we got to see what that could actually look like.

Our pilot cohort has broughr together an incredible group of women, all connected to military service in some capacity, who showed up to surf, connect, try something new + keep coming back. But Third Wave was never meant to be just one group.

THIRD WAVE for life.
For me. For you. For whoever finds their way here.

We want to keep creating groups, experiences + opportunities for people to connect through movement, nature and each other.
