It’s 2016 again! Wow I had a lot of hair, and more baby fat.

But also I was a little lost. A breakup, a job loss, feeling untethered.

I looked inward to understand what defines me: expression. I looked down to understand what grounds me: movement. I looked up to understand what connects me: love. And I looked outward to understand what guides me: experience.

Well, a whole decade later I think I’ve done as well as I could. I made mistakes and slowly, slowly learned from them. Most importantly, I lived authentically. I was unapologetically and incandescently myself. And that’s as much as I can ask of me.

#tbt - A climbing friend of a friend whose name I can’t recall at the moment snapped this candid of me one afternoon five years ago.

Not much of a story behind this one except that I was pretty focused and also, apparently, pretty tan. I guess it’s true I was biking a bit that summer.

When I originally posted this back then (on my @waximus account), the caption read “what am I even supposed to do here?” Well I am happy to report that I finished this slabby dihedral V6 a day or so later🥳

Back then I didn’t really know how to respond to comments on Instagram. I mean sure there’s the Reply button, but the social anxiety at the time made doing so a daunting task.

The idea of connecting with several people and responding, potentially starting one or more back and forth new convos (!), was a lot. Plus I felt I had to write something funny/pithy, and also thank them for their comments at the same time, probably.

It’s strange because I usually have no problem talking to people in real life. And these were all people I knew. And I couldn’t heart their comments because it would call attention to the fact that I read it, liked it, and still didn’t reply.

Well, that was then when things were more uncertain in life. Now, I make a point to respond to everybody, because it’s sad to feel like you’ve been ignored. If I haven’t and it’s been a couple days, ping me :)
