POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Over a decade ago, Dr. Nikole Hannah-Jones and her husband decided to enroll their daughter Najya into one of New York’s lower performing public schools, a decision that she hoped would challenge New York’s separate and unequal school system. Now 16, Najya thinks her mother made the wrong choice. In a deeply personal essay for the Times last week, Dr. Hannah-Jones reckons with that decision, posing the question, “In fighting for every black child, did I betray my own?”, igniting fierce debate across social media about the impossible choices that parents in marginalized communities have to make about their children’s education. I’m honored to share my portraits of Dr. Nikole Hanna-Jones @nikolehannahjones, and family photographed on assignment for @nytmag in New York City. Thanks to @davidcarthas, and everyone at the NYT mag for thinking of me for this one. Thanks to @phtsdr for the scans and color work and to Shawn and Dorthy for the assist. #publiceducation #coverstory, #nikolehannajones by @waynelawrence

Honored to have photographed Tristan and his father Rick, in Gilbert, Arizona last Summer for @nytmag. Their story is a harrowing one but im always happy to help shed light where there’s darkness. The story of their fight against the “Gilbert Goons” is online and in print on 1/11/26. Thanks @kristen.geisler and @nytmag for your continued support. #gilbertgoons, #nytmag #editorial #documentary #portraits taken in Gilbert, Arizona by @waynelawrence

Giving thanks for life today as I celebrate another revolution around the sun, feeling especially grateful for loved ones who still check to see if man alright, and whose light inspires me to be my most authentic self. Blessed love. You know who you are. #earthstrong #birthday #blessings #fireman #eternallight taken in Planet Earth by @waynelawrence

I photographed a few students, faculty and scenes at The University of Michigan for Nicholas Confessore’s reporting on the school’s DEI program published in this week’s issue of @nytmag.

“On Michigan’s largely left-leaning campus, few of the people I met questioned the ideals of diversity or social justice. Yet the most common attitude I encountered about DEI during my visits to Ann Arbor was a kind of wary disdain.” - Nicholas Confessore, investigative reporter for the New York Times and staff writer for the Times Magazine.

Michigan has poured roughly a quarter of a billion dollars into DEI since 2016, according to an internal presentation Confessore obtained. Yet many students and faculty members he spoke with are more frustrated than ever.
