BEYOND THE PODIUM: REFLECTIONS ON THE OLYMPIC EXPERIENCE - PARIS 2024 ____________________________________________ After a two month hiatus and conclusion of the Paris Olympics, I reflect on the whirlwind of preparation, emotion, and pressure that defined the journey. Having supported elite athletes through the highs and lows, I’ve come to realize that performance goes beyond winning medals. The true essence of performance is in the resilience, sacrifice, and relentless pursuit of personal excellence. This post delves into the lessons learned about managing expectations and the vital role of taking time off. Rediscovering balance is essential for sustained success—whether you’re on the field or behind the scenes. #buildingbetterathletes by @waynelombardsa
My high performance journey (Part 2) “If I see further its by standing on the shoulders of giants” There are generally only 2️⃣ things I REALLY dislike doing, 1) is hearing myself talk & 2) Talking about myself…but if this post in some way can inspire others, it will be worth it! So here it goes… Often as we progress in our careers we forget to sit back & reflect on the journey we have traveled, to get to this point. I would love to say that I did it all myself, but the truth is that our careers are defined by many interactions, both planned & unplanned. Just like a periodisation plan for athletes, our career paths need to be “agile” in nature as we may find opportunities knocking on the door that may not be at the right time or place. But, to risk nothing is to risk it all. 3 key aspects in shaping my career: 1. The relentless pursuit of knowledge & understanding (stems from the drive to be the best i possibly can & in turn unconsciously inspire others to be better, then I have achieved something). Knowledge obtained from books&research, is great, but practical experience & mentors may trump this! This is also what inspired my long academic path of my career! 👨‍🎓 2. Keeping my circle small - have a good support system! 3. The Athletes - they are the giants on whose shoulders I have stood. They mould our careers! Learn from your athletes! Trust the Process… 2008 - as a graduate in Sports Science and while pursing my Honours in Biokinetics I volunteered at a school as an S&C a couple of days a week. 2009 - during my honors degree in Bio we had to do job shadowing at various places. 2010 - Started my high performance journey at the @sportscience_sa HPC as an intern, where I was very privileged to work with some of the best Biokineticists / high performance practitioners the country had to offer. 2011 - was offered a full time position at the SSISA HPC post my internship allowing me to get exposure to all SA’s national sporting teams from the big three like rugby, cricket ands soccer, to various Paralympic, and Olympic sport athletes. “There's nothing that's going to stand in his way that's going to not allow him to achieve what he wants to achieve, whether it's a major injury like a patellar tendon rupture or whether it is something smaller like the current ankle injury.” Athlete Performance Specialist Wayne Lombard Long jumper Murali Sreeshankar suffered an injury at the Asian Games in Japan and has since undergone surgery on his right ankle. He is now focused on making a full recovery and returning to competition in the 2027 athletics season. Since making his comeback from a serious knee injury, Sreeshankar has delivered several impressive performances, winning medals at the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games, recording a remarkable 8.38m jump at the Inter-State Athletics Championships, and qualifying for the World Athletics Championships. Speaking exclusively to myKhel, athlete performance specialist Wayne Lombard discussed Sreeshankar's resilience, his ability to overcome injuries, and his determination to achieve his goals despite the challenges he has faced. #Athletics #InduanAthletics #TrackandField #longjump by @waynelombardsa

“The mindset that TJ has is he wants to get better all the time, and he wants to compete. He doesn't want to be a participant in any event. He wants to be a competitor.” Athlete performance specialist, Wayne Lombard The year 2026 has been a brilliant one for Tejaswin Shankar. He started the year with a gold medal in the heptathlon at the Asian Indoor Championships, setting a national record with 5,993 points. He then crossed the 8,000-point mark in the decathlon at the Federation Cup in Ranchi, becoming the first Indian to achieve the feat. He went on to win a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games with 7,976 points. And just a few days ago, he added another bronze medal at the Asian Games, finishing with 7,934 points. In an exclusive interview with myKhel, athlete performance specialist Wayne Lombard opens up about Tejaswin Shankar, their journey through comebacks, the importance of hard work and rehabilitation, the role of sports science, and what it truly takes to perform consistently at the highest level. #Athletics #indianathletics #TrackAndField #asiangames2026 by @waynelombardsa
44 years. 🥇 I’ve been fortunate to work at Olympic Games, World Cups and Commonwealth Games. But watching this group of become Asian Champions, and qualify directly for the LA28 Olympics, was a great way to close some of the big comps for 2026. I’ve seen the early mornings, the sore bodies, the testing days nobody enjoys, and the quiet sessions with no cameras around. I’ve seen this team pick itself up after setbacks and keep believing when it would have been easy not to. Gold doesn’t come from one tournament. It comes from all of that. “She’s still hungry to perform. She’s still enjoying the process of getting ready to perform. She’s resilient. She’s gritty. And that’s more important for me than any number that your age might show.” Athlete performance specialist, Wayne Lombard After battling injury, PV Sindhu has made a strong return to the badminton circuit this season. She ended a four-year wait for a Super 500 or higher-level title by winning the Japan Open. Sindhu defeated top players such as Han Yue, Chen Yufei and Akane Yamaguchi on her way to the title. It was her biggest trophy since winning the World Championships gold in 2019. The victory has once again put Sindhu among the top contenders, especially with the World Championships, a major competition, coming up on home soil. #Badminton #PVSindhu #WayneLombard #WorldBadmintonChampionships by @waynelombardsa
