Only 2 hours from SF, @sanctuarybeachresort makes a perfect dog-friendly getaway ✨ /hosted

We stayed here as the first stop of our Highway 1 road trip, and it really set the tone for the rest of our travels. Phoebe was eagerly greeted and pampered by the staff, and we could tell dogs are genuinely welcomed onto the property. She enjoyed picking out a daily stick from the Stick Library (which was always stocked), and Phoebe also got her own meal at dinner with several options to choose from on the dog menu @saltwoodkitchen

This is a dog-friendly property that we could keep coming back to, and it’s really set a standard for the type of experiences we want to share with Phoebe.

SAVE for a weekend in Sonoma 🐶🍷

Sonoma is a perfect weekend getaway from the Bay Area, and it’s so dog-friendly! This is what we would recommend if we only had a couple of days for a visit:

🚲 Explore the area by bike with @vineandvista and their dog-friendly side cars. This is one of our favorite activities, and such a unique way to explore wine country! Half day and full day rentals are available, as well as guided tours 🐶 /hosted

🍣 Stop for brunch at @saltandstonekenwood 🍹 They have a large dog-friendly patio with plenty of shade for the summer months.

🍷 Take time for a wine tasting at Landmark Vineyards. They have locations in Kenwood and Healdsburg and both are dog-friendly! The property is beautiful and the wine is amazing. Thank you @landmarkwine for hosting us ❤️

😴 We recommend Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn as a home base. It’s one of the most dog-friendly hotels we’ve experienced, allowing dogs poolside and at their restaurant. @fairmontsonoma /hosted

Carmel is considered one of the most dog-friendly cities in California. Dogs are allowed in stores, on restaurant patios, and on many beaches. But what many people may not realize, is that @maddogsbikeshop you can rent bikes and sidecars for a day of exploring! 🐶🚲

Yes, you read that right, you can rent an e-bike and sidecar for your favorite co-pilot and bike throughout Carmel and along the coast. 🥹 Our favorite route was along 17-Mile Drive at Pebble Beach. 😍

The shop provides everything you need including helmets, straps to secure your pup for safety, and a bed in the sidecar to keep them comfy! Rentals are available for half or full days, and if you reallllly love the experience they sell bikes and sidecars on site too.

If you decide to spend a day in Carmel, here are some of the best dog-friendly recommendations:

Dog-friendly hike in Pacifica, California 🐶🌊

This is one of our favorite dog-friendly hikes in the Bay Area. It’s got beautiful ocean views, and on the day we did this hike, we could see all the way to the Golden Gate Bridge.

Here’s what you need to know:
🐶 Dogs should be leashed, and don’t forget to pick up after them on the trail.
🥾 3.3 miles total
📈 800 feet elevation gain
⚠️ Some parts of the Pedro Point Headlands are currently closed for restoration. Follow all signs posted along the trail.
🅿️ Parking is available near Devil’s Slide, but it’s very limited on this side closest to the Pedro Point Trailhead. Parking on the other side of Devil’s Slide will add over a mile to your hike.

Have you tried this trend with your dog? We had to do some serious work beforehand to make sure Phoebe was okay with the sheet staying on top of her. But she did so well when we got ready to actually take photos!

It’s National Taco Day, and your dog wants to go to Taco Bell 🌮🐶

This is by far the most scenic Taco Bell we’ve ever visited, and it also has a huge dog-friendly patio. We used to take Chloe after hiking along the coast 🥹 and we recently took Phoebe for the first time. They even have heaters for those notoriously foggy evenings.

Tell us, what’s your @tacobell order? We love subbing in black beans on a Crunchwrap supreme. Pro tip: add chipotle sauce for an extra kick!

Dog-friendly fall road trip 🐶🍂

Mammoth is one of our favorite getaways because it’s got the breathtaking views of a National Park, but with plenty of dog-friendly trails and activities.

We recommend:
☀️ sunrise at Convict Lake
🌅 sunset at Hot Creek Geologic Site
🥾 hiking Crystal Lake Trail (3.3 miles)
🛶 Crowley Lake Stone Columns
Pro tip: you can actually kayak to the columns, and some rental companies allow small dogs to join!

Dog-friendly orca spotting?! 🐶🫍

We took Chloe on a trip with @monterey_bay_whale_watch around this time two years ago, and we were amazed we actually saw killer whales on our first trip out! While not as frequently spotted as the spring season, orcas can be found hunting in the Monterey Bay late August through October.

We were so grateful we took this trip with Chloe, as we got her diagnosis shortly after. This is a memory we are so happy we shared with her 🥹🤍

Pro tip: be sure to take Dramamine ahead of time if you’re prone to motion sickness. The water gets very choppy, and it’s not easy to treat once you’re already on the water.

How we trained our dog to chill in her backpack 🐾

Backpack training didn’t happen overnight — we started with just letting her sniff it, then rewarded her for touching it, then we practiced downs while laying on it.

If you’re working on this with your own pup, be sure to save for reference. Remember to take your time and above all else, make sure they feel comfortable.

🐕 Start with paw touches before asking them to fully lay on it 🎯 in the beginning, give treats for any kind of interest in the backpack ⏱️ Short sessions, multiple times a day beats one long one 🐶 Once comfortable, practice short walks first

Dog-friendly glamping with private bathrooms is the type of luxury we’re looking for when we travel ✨

We recently visited Yosemite, and decided to stay @undercanvasofficial - we stayed at their property near the Grand Canyon in 2021, so we were excited to check out one of their newest locations.

If you’re looking for a unique getaway this fall, we would highly recommend dog-friendly glamping. It’s the perfect mix of nature with all the luxuries of a hotel.
