The public health crisis hiding in plain sight. Reality 7: Isolation and Loneliness More than #11million children in the U.S. have experienced the criminal charging or incarceration of a parent or caregiver. For many children impacted by parental incarceration, isolation is not temporary. It can be shaped by separation, stigma, silence, disrupted caregiving, financial hardship, and the barriers families face when trying to stay connected. Over time, isolation and loneliness can affect mental health, physical health, learning, relationships, and long-term well-being. But connection is one of the strongest protective factors we have. A trusted adult. A safe relationship. A supportive community. A system that recognizes what children are carrying and responds with care. My relationship with my father suffered until we were able to pay to put the phone on when I was around 13. From that point on I remember waiting every single day for my phone to ring so I can have those 30 minutes with my dad.
