🌍 Forget the Classics – These Students are Studying to Save the World! 🌍

We’re delighted to say that the @telegraph has published a dedicated feature on our unique approach, challenging traditional learning by dissecting multiple disciplines to empower students with the skills they need to address real-world challenges. 🎓

Take Zuzana Fernandes; initially set to study physics at King’s College London, she chose LIS to focus on practical solutions that matter. Today, she’s applying her skills as a software engineer, ready to make an impact! Or meet Lucy Adeniji, who has a passion for solving social issues (and has been tipped to be a future Prime Minister!). Lucy tackled the racialised wealth gap during her time at LIS and is now joining the green jobs firm Greenworkx to continue her mission. 💼

Our Dean, Carl Gombrich, encapsulates our ethos: “Critical thinking has to go with real-world application. You cannot solve problems like climate change or AI ethics from a single disciplinary perspective.” At LIS, education is not just about learning - it’s about transforming that learning into action, making a tangible impact on the world.

If you’re ready to take on the world’s biggest challenges with a fresh, interdisciplinary approach, our doors are open. 🚀

Buzzfeed recently published a now deleted article on what AI thinks Barbies would look like from different countries around the world.

The results contained extreme forms of representational bias - including colourist and racist depictions, which is something that AI image generators are often prone to doing.

With AI image generators like MidJourney, Stable Diffusion, and Dall-E gaining huge popularity, it’s important that we are vigilant about the forms of bias that these technologies can fuel.

Full video coming soon on ‘How AI Image Generators Make Bias Worse’ on The London Interdisciplinary School Youtube Channel.

(Volume on! 📢)

LIS is hard to explain succinctly. And we mean *really* hard. Because there’s a lot going on.

We’re a ‘higher-education-provider’-which-isn’t-the-coolest-word-but-for-now-we-have-to-use-it-who-built-brand-new-undergraduate-and-postgraduate-degrees-for-students-who-want-to-tackle-real-world-problems-because-these-problems-are-incredibly-important-and-deeply-interdisciplinary-which-is-a-word-we’re-trying-to-shorten-to-“ID”-but-it-hasn’t-quite-caught-on-yet-and-we’re-also-developng-this-big-group-of-organisations-called-the-LIS-Network-who-work-with-our-faculty-and-students-on-problems-they’re-facing-because-lots-of-clever-things-happen-inside-universities-and-we-think-they-should-happen-outside-too-oh-and-did-we-mention-we’re-looking-at-launching-short-certficiates-so-more-people-can-study-with-us-and-and-and-and-and….

See what we mean?

So we set ourselves the challenge of explaining LIS in 60 seconds.

How do you think we did?

...2023, let’s go!

Half of students say they’re interested in campus politics. Only around 1 in 6 actually show up. Why?

LIS BASc alum, Maddie, used her final-year research project (what we call a Capstone) to find out what really gets people to take part in democracy. She treated university campuses as micro-democracies, where students vote, organise, debate and try to influence the institutions around them.

To get there, Maddie combined political science with survey research, statistical analysis and visual methods, surveying 386 students across more than 150 UK institutions and running six focus groups. We’ve summarised the results above.

Now she’s joining the Civil Service Fast Stream, the UK government’s graduate leadership programme. After a year studying why people lose faith in institutions, she’ll be working inside one, helping shape how government responds to the public.

That’s the Capstone. You pick a problem you care about and use everything you’ve learned to tackle it, and the work goes with you when you leave.

What would your project look like? Swipe through for the findings, and explore our degrees via the link in our bio.

1.4 million views in 3 days. Then a live interview on New Zealand's biggest breakfast show. Here's the story of where it came from and where it went next.

Alex's research began as his BASc Capstone. The LIS Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees end with one: an in-depth project on a problem you choose, using everything you've learned.

Alex's project combined linguistics, anthropology, data science, natural language processing and sports science to look at how commentators describe Premier League players. He found that darker-skinned players are more often framed through physical qualities, while cognitive qualities skew towards lighter-skinned players.

Since then, Alex has presented his findings on @tvnz.official's Breakfast show and to @mancity F.C. His work has started conversations about bias with some of the biggest names in football. He now works as a football coach and player care lead.

That's what happens when you follow what matters to you and have the skills to go deep.

Swipe through for the full story, and find out more about the BASc via the link in our bio.

What does a BASc research project look like at LIS?

At the end of each year, BASc students spend their final term on a problem that interests them. They use the skills and knowledge they've built across disciplines to investigate it properly, with real data, real methods and real findings.

LIS graduate Alex Doyle wanted to know if football commentary has a racial bias.

Alex analysed commentary transcripts covering 800 Premier League players and tracked who was described with 8 physical traits and 8 cognitive traits. Then Alex combined the faces of the players described by each word into a single "average face."

Every physical trait produced a darker-skinned face. Six of the eight cognitive traits produced a lighter-skinned one.

Start with what you care about. Finish with something that shows the world how it really works. That's the BASc.

What problem would you take on? Explore the BASc via the link in bio.

LIS has been singled out in a major new report on AI and education by Anthony Seldon.

It’s held up as a leading example of how universities may need to change for the age of AI.

Britain’s Greatest Education Opportunity Ever, by Sir Anthony Seldon and Tim Bunting, argues that AI is moving faster than education can keep up, and that education now needs to rethink what it values and what it is preparing people for.

The report makes the case for education that is broader, less prematurely specialised and better at helping people connect knowledge across domains.

And LIS is described as:

“The clearest single expression of the trend.”

As AI gets better at producing work that once demonstrated knowledge or understanding, the report argues that education should put more weight on human judgement, creativity, interpretation, scepticism, ethical reasoning and the ability to connect ideas across domains.

That is exactly the kind of education LIS was built around.

To learn to think across disciplines in the age of AI, visit our website and explore our degrees.

Careers aren't ladders anymore. They're squiggles.

We're thrilled to announce that Sarah Ellis, three-time Sunday Times bestselling author and co-founder of @squigglycareers, one of the UK's most listened-to careers podcasts, will be our commencement speaker, addressing our graduates on their graduation day. 👏

For over a decade, Sarah has been making the case that career growth isn't a straight line up a single ladder. It's messier than that. Sideways moves, unexpected turns, skills picked up in one field and repurposed in another. Sarah and her co-founder Helen Tupper call it the "squiggly career," and it's a much more honest description of how careers actually work.

That's the mindset we build for at LIS. Students who can move across disciplines, connect ideas that don't obviously belong together, and adapt as the ground shifts beneath them. We don't train people for one job. We prepare them for a world that keeps changing shape.

So if you've ever worried that not having a single, linear career "plan" makes you less serious, less employable, less “together” than everyone else, Sarah's message is the opposite. The squiggle isn't a failure to find your path. It *is* the path. And it can twist, stall, double back, and still take you somewhere extraordinary.

We can't think of a better person to send our graduates out into the world.

Last week, we welcomed the London Interdisciplinary School’s MBA cohort to The Conduit for Crit Night. Students brought real challenges to the table, and our members brought the questions that make you rethink your own assumptions.

Members moved between tables, drawn to whichever project sparked their curiosity most, and the conversations kept going long after the formal session ended.

It’s exactly the kind of evening we love hosting: sharp thinking, generous feedback, and new connections formed over a shared problem.

Which event should you join this week? 👇

The future belongs to leaders who can connect ideas, not just specialise in them.

We're delighted to welcome the @weare_lis as an Academic Partner of the Resilience World Nexus (RWN) Summit 2026.

Founded on the principle that today's most complex challenges demand interdisciplinary thinking, LIS equips students to tackle real-world issues by combining disciplines including data science, economics, neuroscience, law, and the arts. Through partnerships with organisations such as McKinsey, the NHS, and KPMG, students work on live challenges spanning AI, climate, and inequality.

By bringing together diverse perspectives to solve complex problems, LIS is helping develop the next generation of leaders equipped to navigate an increasingly uncertain world.

We look forward to welcoming the LIS community to RWN Summit 2026.
