Even if the world is trying to tell you that your story doesn’t count, they’re wrong.

It doesn’t matter if you don’t fit into their box of what a “survivor should look like.”

We’re all different.

We all reacted to the abuse differently.

And that’s ok.

Because what you went through matters.

But more importantly, you matter.

One question I’ve gotten a lot in our inbox lately is people wondering if their relationship is abusive or not.

I remember when I first starting asking myself that question. It was the summer of 2015. My parents had just voiced their opinion on my partner and I needed some help. One question I got asked a lot was, “Are you happy?”

And I was happy. Of course we had our bad moments, but what couple didn’t, right?

So I stayed.

I never want to label someone else’s situation for them, because finding out you’re a survivor of domestic violence can be so hard. I remember when someone labeled it for me the first time. I got angry. I was in denial.

That’s why these questions can be helpful. They’re not meant to put a label on what you’re going through. They’re meant to help you decide if you feel safe.

If you feel like the relationship you’re in – whether that’s a romantic relationship or a friendship or any other kind of relationship – might be abusive and you want to know if what you’ve been tolerating is ok or not, feel free to ask yourself these questions.

Because you should be safe, heard, validated, and supported in healthy romantic/friendship/familial relationships. And you should at the very least feel safe in healthy professional relationships.

And please remember that emotional and psychological abuse are very real. If there aren’t any physical wounds, that doesn’t mean what you went through is any less valid. You matter. Your story matters. Your health and well-being matters.

PTSD or post-traumatic stress disorder is common in survivors.

I am a survivor with PTSD myself, and while the diagnosis did feel crushing, I want to make sure we’re talking about it. It’s important! And it really needs to be destigmatized.

There are 3 categories of PTSD symptoms:
1- Avoiding reminders of the trauma (this is what I most identify with currently)
2- Being on guard
3- Reliving the event

If you’ve been diagnosed with PTSD, please know you are not alone. And please know that it’s not a death sentence.

The symptoms can be devastating. And it’s absolutely unfair that our lives have been altered in this way.

But healing is possible.

A little glimpse into the 6th Annual @wearehernetwork Retreat 💕✨

A weekend full of laughs, knowledge sharing, deep conversations, new friendships, heartfelt reflections, and the kind of connection that reminds you how powerful it is when community heals together.

So grateful to be surrounded by so many incredible humans who are willing to show up and share their stories.

The only thing missing? More time together (and maybe a few more dance parties 😉💃🏽)

Until next time, HER community 💖✨ by @wearehernetwork

Even a $15 donation can help a survivor find her community. Karina spent years healing alone before We Are HER gave her something she didn’t know she needed. People who truly got it.

Give Big Gallatin Valley is in 3 days.
