I never, ever take client feedback lightly. It's part of my growth as a designer and human in general! This one however, had me in tears...not least because it is always my absolute goal when it comes to my approach.

I’ve been consulting on this new-build project over the past almost a year, and last week the family finally moved in.

My role on this project was slightly different, as I wasn’t the design lead. Instead, I worked alongside the clients as an advisor and sounding board throughout the build, reviewing the original architectural plans and suggesting revisions, designing the interior lighting scheme and kitchen layout, specifying bathroom fittings, and helping them navigate the many decisions around colours, materials and finishes that would form the ‘bones’ of their home.

It was an interesting way to work. Rather than creating the entire scheme from the ground up, I was responding to an existing design and to the questions and challenges that arose as the build progressed. It challenged me to think differently, find supportive solutions and use my experience where it could make the greatest difference.

As designers, we can spend months looking at plans, drawings and samples, but there is something incredibly satisfying about walking into the finished space and seeing, in real life, the difference those decisions have made.

The house has been beautifully built by Will Unwin and his team, whose standard of workmanship is genuinely exceptional, and it was wonderful to visit the house last week and see the family actually using and enjoying their new home.

And we’re not quite finished yet...

Next, we move onto the FF&E and window dressings, when we can begin layering in the furniture, textiles, lighting, artwork and details that will turn this beautifully constructed house into their home.

Enormous gratitude to you Jenny & Jimmy and your beautiful family for allowing me to be part of this incredible journey with you.

Oh my god, do you ever start something and wish you hadn't?! That is me today.

I still haven't organised shoots for my finished projects, so I thought I would at least update my website portfolio with some of my process work from each project. But of course, now I have to make sure the mobile version is correct...which it is NOT! And now I have run out of time to resolve it so it's going to be overnight wonky and I'm just going to have to suck it up.

Do not. I repeat Do not, click on the link in my bio! 😂

My small business owner peeps, you feeling my pain??!! 😭

I’m a details gal. And I actually really enjoy kitchen design…I go deep!

A little insight into our process.

From the initial spatial planning and technical drawings through to the finer details of cabinetry, materials and finishes.

This is part of our design development for one of our projects, where every single decision is considered before we move towards the build stage.

A lot of thought goes into making a space feel effortless.

The Potential.

Sundays are for slowing down, and for thinking about the things that are made to last.

This is our concept for a Grade II listed Regency townhouse in Cheltenham. A house with two centuries of craftsmanship already in its bones, and a scheme designed to sit quietly alongside it.

It all begins with the materials. Brushed oak underfoot. Honed limestone, worn soft. Calacatta marble with its grey veining, and Calacatta Viola for something richer. Aged brass and bronze that will only get better with every hand that touches them. Decorative botanical plasterwork that echoes the cornicing and ceiling roses a house like this was built with.

Every surface has been chosen to wear in, not wear out. Natural stone that gathers character, timber that deepens, metals that patina.

Formal rooms with weight and calm. A kitchen made for long, unhurried weekends. Bedrooms layered in linen, embroidery and soft light. Bathrooms wrapped in book-matched marble. A garden of clipped box and white hydrangea.

Respecting the past, made for the way we live now.

I'm not kidding when I say I LOVE what I do.

And the reason I love it isn't because of the beautiful things, or even necessarily the end result (although I do love that bit a lot too)!

It's the people.

It's the way what I do makes people feel. It's the way the environments we inhabit make such a fundamental difference to how we live, and how I can impact that in such a positive way.

It's the relationships, the collaboration, the problem solving, and being part of something that matters so much to someone else.

Over a year ago, I carried out my first review of the architect's plans for this project. Yesterday, we completed the final snagging, and this lovely message arrived this morning.

Honestly, worth its weight in gold.❤️

Another part of what I love is discovering new talent in young designers and helping them build the foundations from which to grow.

And Tilly is an absolute gem, watching her evolve as a designer will be an absolute pleasure! 👑

So if you have a project in mind and need a dream team to help you execute it... well, you know what to do! 😉☝️

A little surrealism for October for our #studiorayloves curation this month.

I've always been hooked by the relationship between fine art and the decorative arts, and Jean Cocteau is a particularly wonderful example of the two colliding.

Poet, artist, filmmaker, ceramicist... a man whose imagination seemed entirely unconcerned with the boundaries between disciplines.

It's his expressive linework and wonderfully theatrical approach that I find particularly captivating. The fluidity of a single drawn line, the unexpected forms, the playful relationship between the human figure and the objects around us.

Add to that...I have had these Cocteau wall lights from @paolomoschinoltd on my wishlist for sometime, and there is currently a sensational collection of limited edition lithograph Cocteau prints available at Paolo Moschino too.

And...cOCTeau and OCTober. Had to do it! 😉

I've gathered a small collection of pieces that speak to those qualities.

A little sculptural drama, some beautiful craftsmanship, and just enough eccentricity to keep things interesting.

I thought I'd share the beginnings of a kitchen concept I'm currently working on, along with a few of my musings.

The project is a 1950s family home, and the brief was a functional, hardworking kitchen, but with a distinctly 'Mad Men' vibe.

There are some fairly challenging spatial restrictions to navigate, but we've managed to accommodate the wish list without compromising the sense of ease in the room. And, perhaps most satisfyingly, I'm the third designer to have tackled this particular space. I'm very happy to say the client was sold. 😊

Which brings me to something else I've been thinking about.

I was chatting with a young designer recently who asked me how I navigate imposter syndrome.

My answer was... I lean on the things I know I'm good at.

I have a good eye.

I'm a good problem solver.

I'm good with people.

And the rest I take as a constant learning and evolving.

I don't think confidence comes from knowing everything. I think it comes from knowing what you bring to the table, being comfortable with what you don't know, and having the curiosity to keep learning.

It's why I love a challenge. And why, when all the pieces finally come together, there's still an enormous amount of satisfaction in getting it right.

Don Draper would approve. 😉

This morning Tilly and I swapped fabric samples and floor plans for shotguns and clay pigeons up at @iancoleysporting and my were we blessed with the beautiful Autumn weather! 🍂🍁

Having never shot before, this was also a chance for me to tick another experience off my 50 for 50 bucket list…50 things I’ve never done before to mark turning 50 next year!

A huge thank you to @johnmorganpartnership for the kind invitation and warm hospitality. We had so much fun (and always a pleasure to catch up with my ‘work bestie’ James from @astra_lumos 🫶)

Anyway, back to the drawing board now. Quite literally.
