We're expanding what "Breadwinner" means in today’s culture, beyond the paycheck.
🎙️The Breadwinners Podcast & Substack👇🏼
The Courage to Confide.
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
My five-year-old asked me what a Breadwinner is.

I told her: someone who brings important things into the home. Love. Safety. Joy. The energy that makes a house feel like a home.

That moment became the premise for everything you’re about to see.

This Mother's Day, we're launching IN CONFIDENCE, a five-episode documentary series celebrating modern motherhood.

This was filmed at our LA Breadwinners Dinner, built from unscripted conversations, and shaped around one question: What are you carrying? And what are you bringing home?

Episode 1 centers around 'What We Bring...'

Huge thank you to @birthfund and @hearth for being at this table with us. 🙏🏻

To @raphee_v for the gorgeous production and @hiamandacasas for her incredible interview skills. 🎬

And to @elainewelteroth, @shilparshah and @carlydow for being vulnerable, thoughtful, and honest. 💕

The term Breadwinner...

For generations, this word has been narrowly defined. Is it just the person who brings home the paycheck?

Or is it the person who provides.

Provides Love. Patience. Stability. Energy. Growth. Compassion. Silliness. Snuggles. And yes, at times, money that enables possibility.

This platform exists to rewrite outdated narratives about who "carries" the household.

Not in competition. Not in apology. Not in secret.

Out loud. Together.

We are not anomolies.
We are not exceptions.
We are not "too much".

We are the Breadwinners.

Join us. by @wearethebreadwinners

Our San Francisco Breadwinners Dinner | 2.26.26

There’s a certain energy that happens when ambitious women stop performing and just are.

That was this dinner.

You could feel it the moment everyone walked in. Thirty women who are used to being the most capable person at any given table - and for once, they weren’t the exception.

They were the room.

We started the evening with a simple question.

"What did you love about yourself...before the world had an opinion about it?"

Before the expectations.
Before the comparisons.
Before someone told you that you were too much — or not enough.

The answers around that table made my cheeks hurt from smiling.

Because the little girls in that room? They already knew who they were. Confident. Creative. Loud. Unapologetic.

And then somewhere along the way...they were asked to make themselves smaller.

This evening was about being remembered, for who you were - and who you are.

The infectious energy these women created, it doesn’t dissipate when the night ends. It follows you home.

Welcome to The Breadwinners.

Elvis wanted half the rights to a song Dolly wrote. She said no, and kept the song that became “I Will Always Love You.”

At our first Nashville dinner, I asked 30 women to remember who they were before the world told them who to be. Nobody described someone small.

Comment SEVEN and I’ll send you the full essay. 🤍

I peed on the tennis court 🎾 I lunged for a quick ball mid-match and hoped to God nobody saw.

Then I sat down with @the.vagina.whisperer

Dr. Sara Reardon has been a pelvic floor physical therapist for 20 years, and she told me the exact same thing happened to her a few months ago, in hot pink leggings.

We talk about why you get cleared at six weeks postpartum when your pelvic floor muscles are only working at about 50%, the bathroom habit she wants every woman to drop, and why it’s never too late to get care, even ten years after your last baby.

Full episode live - comment "pelvic floor" for a link to the episode. You don't want to miss this one.

Last month I made my own Bring Your Daughter to Work Day.

My daughter is six, and she’s spent the past year and a half watching me build The Breadwinners. So I took her to Nashville to watch me record with @carolinejones. We'd listened to Caroline’s songs all week. Callen sat in on the interview, heard Caroline’s story, and got to see mommy at work.

At the end, Caroline played an acoustic set for just the two of us. It’s a core memory for both of us.

I’m building this for the next generation of Breadwinners, too.

Caroline’s episode drops on October 27 🎧

The life looked perfect. The career, the title, the exit. And she was sitting alone in her car every day just to breathe.

This conversation with @devmcdee went places I didn’t expect. We talked about the golden cage high achievers build for themselves, the shame women carry in silence, and what it actually takes to stop performing a life that stopped fitting.

“It’s not about manifesting the thing — it’s about manifesting the feeling.”

To the women out in the real world building, leading, and making magic happen without posting about it: I see you. 🤍

Our Courage to Confide campaign just landed in @parents and the message is one every mom needs to hear. 💛

When we launched this campaign, we set out to change one thing: the idea that admitting you're struggling as a mom is a weakness. It's not. It's a leadership act.

We're proud to have @iskra as the face of Courage to Confide, sharing her own postpartum story so other moms feel permission to share theirs.

30+ mother-focused brands joined us in this mission. This is just the beginning.

Comment “parents” to read the article!

“I’m going to be cool. And when I am cool, everyone is going to be invited and everyone is going to feel safe.”

@marikafrumes made that promise to herself in middle school, a few years after her family arrived in Boston from the former Soviet Union with $400. Today she’s the founder of @myshapods, a community for mothers that started as a WhatsApp group of 18 expecting moms in January 2020.

We recorded this the morning after co-hosting a dinner together in Austin. Marika opened up about her childhood, the difference between a community and a group, and what it takes to build real belonging.

“I was NOT okay.”

That’s how @iskra begins her story, and it’s how this whole initiative begins, with one woman brave enough to say the sentence out loud.

This week, we launch Courage to Confide. 🤍

Postpartum, deep in depression, and from the outside she still looked like the strong one. The ambitious one, with the career and the answers. That’s the trap so many of us know too well: the more we hold, the less anyone thinks to ask if we’re okay.

But nobody asks the strong one if she’s okay.

So consider this the ask. And the permission.

If you’re struggling, tell one person. Today. You don’t have to tell everyone. You have to tell someone.

And if you’re thinking of the strongest mother you know, don’t wait for the right moment. Send the text. Ask how she’s really doing. Then ask again, because she’s spent years perfecting the first answer.

Saying “I’m not okay” isn’t weakness. It’s the bravest form of going first. The courage to confide is the confidence to lead.

More than 30 mother-focused brands and voices stand behind this message.

Save this. Share it. Send it to one mother who needs it.
