One of the biggest mistakes people make in the gym..

Doing the same weight for the same amount of reps on an exercise every single time they do it.

This is a lack of progressive overload. Progressive overload is means making an exercise progressively more challenging over time. This progressive challenge is what makes your body build more muscle, gain strength, build stronger bones, and so on and so forth. Otherwise everything stays the same because there’s no reason for your body to adapt.

There are a lot of methods of progressive overload, but the 2 most common methods are increasing the weight used for an exercise or increasing the amount of reps done.

However, knowing how much and how quickly to progress and exercise depends on a lot of factors, which is why having a knowledgeable and experienced coach is so beneficial.

If you want to get the most out of your training and progress safely and effectively, click the link in my bio or message me today to start a free trial.

Here’s a small tip that makes a big difference…

There’s a few things that people can often do better with on their Kettlebell swings, one of the main ones is getting started on that first rep.

This tip I picked up over the years has been a great teaching tool to help people get set up on their Kettlebell swings without any wasted reps

What does a Pre-Game Lift Look Like: College ⚾️ Edition

You should never be afraid to lift the day before a game no matter what sport you play. When done correctly, it often actually enhances performance.

The approach to a pre game lift depends on a lot of factors, which is why having a coach that is able to process all these factors and decide on a course of action that will yield the best results given all the info is helpful.

One of the approaches I like to take is have a velocity focused lift. We decided that was the best course of action for this given day. The goal is to lift weights fast and explosive, to stimulate the nervous system without fatiguing it.

Keep the volume (sets and reps) on the low end and do everything with max intent.

Add in 10-15 minutes of mobility work and a few accessories to get the blood flowing and the body moving.

The actual work itself doesn’t have to be super complex or have a bunch of crazy exercises. Knowing and deciding exactly what to do with the athlete in front of you given all the information you get from them is the difference that can make or break performance. taken in Webb Human Performance Systems by @webbhumanperformance

A Phrase That Has Always Stood Out To Me Is You Can Have Ten Years Of Experience, Or One Year Of Experience Repeated 10 Times…

Here’s 5 Things I’ve Changed My Mind On During My Career

1. You Need A New Program Every 4-6 Weeks

In college you’re taught that programming should be done in 4-6 week mesocycles. Anything less and it’s too much change to make progress, anything more and it can lead to stagnation and plateaus. As you get experience, you learn that outside of maybe elite strength athletes, the majority of people could do the same training program for 3-6 months or more and still make lots of progress. I go in 3 month cycles for my own training program. Honestly 2-3 month training cycles is probably better for most people as it allows them time to get better at the skill and technique aspect of the exercise for a month and then they can start really increasing weight for 4 weeks and get stronger. The only reason I use 4 week cycles for my clients is because of the mental aspect. Many people do enjoy some novelty, change, and fresh exercises.

2. CrossFit Style Workouts Are Bad/Dangerous

This is in reference to general population, it can be useful for athletes but shouldn’t be done all the time. CrossFit training isn’t inherently more dangerous than any other training and it is actually a very good training stimulus. The reason CrossFit is associated with bad training and injuring people is because of the economics and structure of running a CrossFit gym. Large class sizes (10-20+ people), varying fitness levels, lifts like Olympic lifts, deadlifts, squats, etc that require skill and technique, done while fatigued due to intermittent bouts of cardio and limited rest time. This is all usually supervised and taught by a coach, who is often very inexperienced or unqualified to be coaching people, likely making ~$30 an hour part time as more of a hobby than a job. Those factors combined is why sometimes CrossFit leads to just dumb training and increased injuries taking place at CrossFit gyms, not b taken in Webb Human Performance Systems by @webbhumanperformance

One The Most Functional Exercises Older Adults Can Do…

Sit Ups

Somehow the term “Functional” when it comes to exercise and fitness has gotten to a point where to be a “Functional Exercise” it has to be convoluted, have multiple moving parts, or involve a bunch of bands and/or standing on a ball.

Basic exercises that have been around for hundreds of years will definitely help you function as much as anything else that may be deemed “functional”.

The next time you need to get up out of bed, get up off the recliner, or if you ever find yourself having to get up off the ground, think about how a simple sit up can help improve and make easier this everyday movement.
