“We are not fighting for Burkina Faso alone. We are fighting for Africa... Look at what’s happening in Sudan... Look at what’s happening in Congo...Africans are the most resilient people in the history of humanity.”

Wow! What a speech! What do you make of this? At the Thomas Sankara Centre, we do not seek to minimise or negate the very real struggles that other colonised and oppressed people face worldwide; however, we ARE thrilled to hear a president stand up for Africa so boldly and unapologetically!

President Ibrahim Traoré gave this speech on 7 November 2025 to an audience coming from the African diaspora in the Americas. by @weblackallyear

Electrifying performance

🎥: Judas and the Black Messiah (2021), Dir. Shaka King

Judas and the Black Messiah brings us a timely look at the Black Panther Party’s Illinois chapter. The story follows FBI informant William O’Neal’s (LaKeith Stanfield) infiltration and ultimate betrayal of Fred Hampton (Daniel Kaluuya), the then Deputy Chairman, and the title’s parallel—drawn between O’Neal and Judas—is both powerful and accurate.

The cast is exceptional and delivers across the board. Kaluuya brings Hampton’s eloquence and magnetism to life, delivering yet another electrifying performance that earned him the Best Supporting Actor award at the 2021 Oscars. I am eagerly anticipating his directorial debut, The Kitchen, scheduled to release on Netflix on January 12th.

Judas and the Black Messiah is a refreshing exploration of one of the many incredible chapters in the American Civil Rights Movement. It shows how directly involved the government was in dismantling groups such as the Black Panthers, and exposes the FBI’s despicable efforts to stop the emergence of new activist leaders.

If you are interested in finding out more about Fred Hampton’s life, recommended reading includes Jeffrey Haas’ excellent and extensive book, The Assassination of Fred Hampton: How the FBI and the Chicago Police Murdered a Black Panther, as well as the Black Panther Party Reading List.

The music of the Mighty Sparrow was the soundtrack of our lives.

He was one of my favorite singers, a true superstar, supremely talented, saucy, wickedly charismatic and the undisputed Calypso King of the World.

Sparrow’s voice moved through everything we did: lazy Sundays, family parties, basement bashments, even wakes. His music was always there.

My late mother, was a huge Sparrow superfan. She spent her last days with his music on constant rotation — Jean and Dinah, Obeah Wedding, The Lizard, Drunk and Disorderly. It was only fitting that his music played at her funeral. Now, he too is gone.

Rest well, Mighty Sparrow - The Calypso King of the World.

Every name I say out loud is a name somebody hoped the world would forget. I will keep saying them until justice answers back.

Power has always counted on us getting tired. I did not come this far to get tired now.
