History in a Newport Minute #135: “Buried in Sand: The Wedge’s Past (Part 2)”

[Editor’s note: 🏄‍♀️ For surfing aficionados, near the end of the video you can see the first photo of a wave at what is now Cylinders. 🏄]

It took six attempts and two decades before a proper jetty was built at the Wedge.

And some of the relics from the five earlier attempts have been uncovered for the first time in a century by the beach erosion caused by this year’s seemingly endless string of major swells.

Here’s part 2 of the history of the Wedge and what lies beneath.

A caveat: The source material for the Wedge’s history contains some conflicting facts and gaps in the story. We did our best to sort it all out.

History in a Newport Minute #134: “Buried in Sand: The Wedge’s Past”

Beach erosion from a series of major swells this year have unearthed remnants of the Wedge’s long-forgotten past that had been buried in the sand for about a century.

Here’s the history of the West (Wedge) Jetty, the beach that bumps up against it, and the relics the recent sand erosion has uncovered.

The first of two parts (and thanks to @yuccafins and @dingosaidso for the assist on this one).

One note: The film clips are from the reconstruction of the West Jetty in 1927, though the scene would have been similar a decade earlier when the original jetty was built.
