“We destroy masculinity in America by doing more than just inculcating timidity in boys and promoting swaggering as a sin. We replace what’s been tried and tested with what is worthless and unwanted when all a boy wants to do is prove himself as a man. We crush a boy’s childlike faith in what is most probable about being a man and leave him doubting if masculinity is even a fact found within him. The new society makes it a heresy to believe in ancient truths.”~Michael Kurcina

I want my grandson to experience a similar boyhood to mine. Boys are boys and girls and girls. Teachers were mentors and not sick people or communists or socialists, spewing nonsense, trying to get kids to buy the insanity they sell. John Wayne and Bronson don’t compete in the same space as our new Hollywood stars like the Rock, or Ryan Reynolds, ever.

The sacred paths have been forgotten. Knowledge of the old rites when boys were lost brought them back to the tribe. Guided by mentors early on they learned the way. It is revealed that a wound was a gift. Inside the wound was their genius. No matter how injured they were they could return home. Never knowing how to deal with the wound they became until death, injured and unfixed. The old ways and stories helped them remember the words of their ancient fathers.

Myths inspired men. The Arthurian legend when honored, a story about a poor boy who becomes king brought a nation together, but forgotten the nation fell apart. We see this throughout the world today. Stories gave a boy’s life much weight.

Men of the past knew who they were. The sacred spaces have been forgotten by so many men today. Most of modern men, warfighters as an example though they are revered by a nation do not know the ways. The attention seeking, boastful man, therefore an irreverent one is not the leader to follow. You will lose your way.

We are a nation of man-babies and those caught up in arrested development didn’t respect the holy spaces. Men do not take their sandals off to stand in the presence of God. Where a wound is that’s where a boys genius will be. Where a wound is that’s where a boys genius will be. Remember that. 📸 The Mechanic by @wefightmonsters

DISPOSABLE. No, you’re not a loser because you don’t know how to love or be loved and she’s not impossible. You have to figure love out. Some of us get dispirited by the enigmas in life. We dream under the same stars, we gaze upon the same shores, we’re warmed by the same sun, and we are even birthed from the same dust yet we never feel like we are truly a part of humanity. And when we lose in love we feel even more separated and lost from the world. How can we be surrounded by millions of people and yet feel so alone? Your sorrow and your loneliness aren’t a curse, it’s a gift and you have to use it or you waste it. I have seen through my own personal losses how men can turn sorrow from death and heartache into blessings. Break away from the world if you must but when you return share your gift with us. Share your knowledge, share your pain, share your love, and tell your tale. Tell the tale that increases the light in this world for men who are sitting in the dark. If you withdraw you’ll never bless the world with your presence, and the knowledge that you could have imparted. You might be able to handle loneliness and heartache but regret is another animal entirely. But remember that a lesson only lasts as long as you want it to.

Sometimes a man needs a detente with mankind. In order to understand this world, a man has to turn away from it from time to time. Solitude provides a man time for transformation. It's a place where he can give attention to himself, and no one else. This untroubled retreat allows a necessary purification to his heart and soul. Many a man's main problem is that he doesn't know how to live alone. Sometimes he needs mere moments alone so he can regroup. Solitude is his preacher. by @wefightmonsters

THE RESCUER and the WANDERER

“My beloved~If a man feels that he has no reason to cry, he should wait, the world will give him one.”~Michael Kurcina

I came home and God was gone. I looked for him all over my home but he left before I got there. I spent mornings and evenings- days and years really- tracking him down. I walked around the world, rode in taxies and buses in cities and walked the country where there were clouds of dust, snakes and possums, and cornfields with their moonlit stalks. I found no signs of Him. I went to holy and unholy places-churches, deserts, and bedrooms and bars with neophytes and whores. I carried my terrible, drunken unhappiness into the angelic arms of Anastasias and Katarinas, Marias and Reagans and Rowans. I wrestled them down to their beds, because every night we dueled for love. One morning, somewhere along the line, in the filthy stall of a madhouse bathroom where I was cleaning sh*t off the floors, there he was. I said, “I love you God. I missed you.” I was in no great, strange dream. As men pissed and crapped, I cried. If a man feels that he has no reason to cry, he should wait, the world will give him one.~MK autobiography.

If you honestly search for something, the chances are high that you will find it. Search for a job, or love, or a friendship but you have to put yourself out there. Ask yourself, what it is that you truly want. Start making plans to obtain it.

Get used to the suck being around others. In order to understand this world, you have turn away from it from time to time. Solitude provides time for transformation. It is a place where a person can give attention to their life. Untroubled retreat allows purification. A man’s main problem is that he knows not how to live alone, and he only tolerates being around people. He needs new skills .

Loneliness and solitude are not the same thing. One can slowly destroy a man, while the other can help him become a better one. Loneliness is the suffering of disconnection. Solitude is the freedom of being comfortable with yourself. A lonely man may be surrounded by people and still feel completely alone. He may have acquaintances, coworkers, and even family, yet lack the meaningful relationships that give life depth and purpose. He may feel misunderstood, forgotten, or disconnected from the world around him.

Loneliness becomes especially dangerous when a man begins convincing himself that he doesn’t need anyone. What begins as disappointment with people can gradually become resentment, bitterness, and emotional withdrawal. Eventually, he may stop seeking friendship, not because he doesn’t desire it, but because he no longer believes it is worth the effort.

Solitude, on the other hand, is something entirely different—it is a man’s ability to enjoy his own company without feeling abandoned by the world. It is the freedom to sit quietly, reflect on his life, examine his failures, appreciate his accomplishments, and consider the kind of man he wants to become.

Solitude is a place where a man can grow. Loneliness is a place where he can slowly disappear. All of that being said, being a man at its best is mostly a lonely life by @wefightmonsters

BROTHER

Brother, promise yourself on this day that you will be a success. Promise yourself. This is the day that your life will change. We who have lived too many years, heard too many lies must not, will not let anything stop us from smashing open the window of unreality and letting through the light of truth. The truth is we are something. We are not nothing. We must take that belief to the grave. Upon the death of a loved one we look into the face of every man that passes you until every one of them exits the room and leaves you to your thoughts and your casket of grief. Death. We lose tears and sleep and friends and dreams. We lose hope, and joy, and lightness and surety, and in their place, we carry one of the heaviest burdens of all, a diabolical heartache. In that transaction we gain painful knowledge and tragic sensibility. Soon after mourning comes clarity and a single vision, in that cold light of day we understand that things will never be the same again. by @wefightmonsters

Any man intending to move his sad life into a brighter future sometimes needs to return to deal with his dark and tragic past. He must confront his dying and living gods to see which of them he’ll let die or revive, and which he’ll serve. He must have the courage to call out society’s hypocrisy and in doing so also face his own. Tears are often only a palliative to a man’s pain and ridding himself of an ache requires much more than weeping. After the death of any of his beloveds he can be engulfed with the feeling that all deaths are an accident in time, and the belief that eternity seems to be the right kind of correction to the curse of living. When a man alienates himself from his friends and abandons his family where can he go? The way back to innocence requires more than conquering the self and calming his spirit of its destructive impulses; man must be less reluctant to weep, quite eager to substitute his brutal nature with acts of loving until wanting peace becomes part of his hourly habits, and he must throw away the poor lessons of his ancestors. Inevitably he must confront every day with vigor instead of timidity. Life and death can spiritually devastate men equally. The way ahead sometimes requires going back and dealing with what he is terrified of bothering with.

Life is not merely something we possess, but something we must consciously participate in. There is a profound difference between simply existing and genuinely living.

“There’s elation in you, there’s power in you, there’s the inability to contain your feelings yet you are focused because you are working to being truly alive. There’s the sense that you have a certain immortal energy coursing through your body and you can’t hold back what it’s bringing, so do something with it. Smile, not because life has given you everything you wanted, but because it has given you something far more fundamental: the opportunity to be here at all.

Do something with it until the light fades and the dark comes. Do something with it until you can’t do any more. Walk beneath those waking dawns, stride into those welcoming arms of twilight, and then run, run, run like a delirious madman through the dark web of night looking for that rich treasure of life. Run until your feet hurt, run until your heart yearns for want of more, run until the answer burns into your mind. You will run under cold rain, or snow, or hot night and you won’t give a damn. You will search for more meaning as you meander through dark parks and under city lights.

Beneath the swirling stars, and the pulsing moon, you will uncover the footpaths of vitality, creativity, purpose and meaning but do not deny the answer they bring because they will disappear with the trackless dawn.

You might only ever get one chance to listen and it does fade with the loss of youth, it fades like knowledge, it fades when you are dishonest, it runs like a river and is carried far away. It fades when you close your ears to learning, and close your ears to the words of your ancestors.

Wake up and listen. Wake up and know there are precious and secret things in this world. Open your heart to loving, your mind to learning and your ears to hearing. Death will come. Pain will come, one day the end will come but tonight smile if you have undertaken the goal of being alive.” ~Michael Kurcina

Youth, courage, honor and sacrifice

“There should be one good day in your life that you can look back upon and remember when you were handsome and holy; one good day in youth when you rose up and stood up against evil men, and those things worthy of fear. When others acted with weakness, in old age you’ll be able to look back with fondness on your courage. When life gets tough let that memory carry you.”~Michael Kurcina WFM

This post speaks to a moment in a young man’s existence when his physical strength, youthful courage, moral convictions, and willingness to sacrifice come together in service of something greater than himself. I suggest that every man should experience a period in his life when he is not merely living for his own comfort, pleasure, or advancement, but is willing to stand up against evil. He should defend the innocent, and risk something precious for a cause he believes is righteous.

I’m not writing about physical beauty, but of youthful vitality. There is a difference between a warrior and a violent man.

Youth is temporary. The powerful body will age. The handsome face will wrinkle. The physical abilities that once seemed limitless will eventually diminish.
But a man who once stood courageously for something good can carry that memory throughout his life. A young man may be asked to surrender everything he has and everything he might someday become. The true test is whether he can confront evil without allowing evil to take possession of his own heart.

📸 Fury. To me this wasn’t just a good war movie. It was a wonderfully profound movie about war, leadership, bravery, sacrifice and service. So many young boys never made it home. We must honor the dead and those who lived to tell a tale.

“A cup of coffee is a cup of poetry.”~Michael Kurcina

Wife. In one gray hour I watch smoky colored folds of darkness smother the last of the spectral lights from so many sad and far away homes, and in a solid moment I grasp the ancient beauty of this place, and the lost, great glorying of her yesteryears. We cross this low land and I understand how dear you are to me. Love, like a red lantern, holds itself high on these dusky roads of war by @wefightmonsters

“I heard the hooves, Death’s heavy horse passed me by, and I could not catch up to them fast enough.”~Michael Kurcina

TRIBE

A man who attempts to keep all of his pain to himself is likely to give it to others.

A song can make us recall a father we lost to cancer, a brother we lost to war, or a spouse who decided the relationship would be no more. What were we feeling at the time?

Songs with heart expose a vulnerability, and perhaps were created out of a singer's personal tragedy, hopefulness or aches (but not always).

A sincere artist has little intent in making money in the beginning. His goal is simply to tell a story and share some kind of beauty, which hopefully reveals a truth in us. The honest song helps an artist who is sad transcend his earthly position; and from its creation to its evocation, to its celebration and its closure helps the audience come along for the ride. No one moves from their seat but everyone is moved, and perhaps in mere seconds they return home and recall joy, safety, purity and beauty. Tonight, put the gun, blade and armor down and listen.

Go home. Let moonlight fill your eyes and reflect on good times, good friends, family and be thankful even for some of the truly hurtful stings in life. Moments of grief married with wonder can make you a grateful man. Put on an old good song. Do you have some old vinyl? Listen to something beautiful and recall some great times and connect with the good people who came into your life.
