27 crazy big, hand-dyed organic cotton curtains!

Weft recently had the pleasure of working with @frankwildco in bringing life to a large scale fabric installation for the @afl Gather Round, 2023.

We have considered the project’s life cycle and the environmental and social impacts, from how the 100% organic cotton is grown and spun, to specifying chemical free OEKO-TEX certified dye and eliminating the use of fabric finishes and softeners.

Developed in collaboration with @lola.varma, the Serena Gown emerged through an ongoing exploration of material, process and form.

At Weft Textiles, our practice is grounded in research, exploring how natural fibres perform, age, and respond to plant-based dyes and low-impact processes over time. Working closely with Lola Varma atelier in Fitzroy, the collaboration became an extension of shared values around craftsmanship, material integrity, and thoughtful making and design.

The process is centred around trusting the inherent behaviour of silk and plant-based dyes. Variations in tone, texture and finish were embraced as part of the garment’s language, shaped through hand processes and the subtle unpredictability of natural materials themselves.

Handmade locally in Melbourne, the gown reflects a slower approach to bridalwear.

In 2022, Weft visited Teotitlán del Valle, Oaxaca, as part of an R&D trip exploring traditional textile practices and natural dyeing within Zapotec weaving communities.

Natural dyeing in Oaxaca exists at the intersection of circularity, material intelligence and cultural preservation; knowledge passed through families over generations, carrying both technique and memory. Despite periods where synthetic dyes nearly displaced these practices entirely, many artisans have continued to protect and revive them, keeping ancestral methods alive through weaving, colour and land-based knowledge. by @weft.textiles
