We know an invitation for breast screening can mean more than just an appointment.

‘Aunty Gets Screened’ speaks directly to the women who aren’t always part of the conversation.

Across Yoruba, Fante, Gujarati, Bengali and English, we are bringing breast screening into the homes, languages and cultural conversations of our communities - addressing the very real fears, misconceptions, stigma and questions that can sit behind an unopened NHS screening letter.

The National Cancer Plan for England is clear in its commitment to work with local communities to reduce gaps in screening uptake and increase participation among ethnic minority and underserved communities.

Created by Touchy-Feely in partnership with North East London Cancer Alliance, Aunty Gets Screened is our part in turning that national commitment into community-level action. Across five films, five women and five different cultural perspectives, we meet women where they are - not simply asking them to attend screening, but recognising the context, conversations and concerns that shape whether an invitation ever becomes an appointment.

Our role is to reach the women who too easily fall through the gaps. Earlier diagnosis saves lives - but to diagnose cancer earlier, we must first ensure every woman feels able to walk through the door.

This is where national ambition meets local trust.

Sometimes advocacy looks like refusing to let someone you love brush something off.

Mphango had already tried to get help and had been dismissed. Her friends said no.

There is so much conversation around advocating for ourselves in healthcare, and rightly so. But there is also a huge role for the people around us.

The friend who notices you’re not yourself.
The family member who asks the question again.
The person who comes to the appointment.
The one who says, “No, we’re getting this checked.”

When somebody is tired, scared, overwhelmed or has already been dismissed once, they may not always have the energy to keep pushing.

Sometimes they need somebody beside them who will. As Blood Cancer Awareness Month comes to an end, Mphango’s story is an important reminder to know your people, notice changes, listen when something feels wrong and never underestimate what your advocacy could mean in somebody else’s life. 🧡 by @wegettouchyfeely

Imagine being told you have lymphoma… while standing outside the school gates waiting to pick up your children.

No appointment, just a phone call, a few tears, and then straight back into mum mode because the kids still had somewhere to be.

That part of cancer isn’t spoken about enough. The diagnosis can change everything in a second, but real life doesn’t suddenly stop. There are still school runs, children to collect, family to call and questions you don’t have the answers to yet.

For Kim, the biggest feeling in that moment was disbelief. Is this actually real?

This is why we share these stories. Cancer happens in real life, to real people, in the middle of very ordinary days and no one should have to feel alone in their journey - that includes their diagnosis 🧡 by @wegettouchyfeely

Menopause 👏🏾 can 👏🏾 happen 👏🏾 in 👏🏾 your 👏🏾 twenties

For some women, menopause is caused by cancer treatment through chemotherapy, radiotherapy, surgery or hormone therapy. And for some, that can mean entering menopause in our 20s or 30s, decades earlier than ever expected.

Menopause can happen by being:
🏥 Surgically induced
💉 Medically induced
💊 Treatment induced

I was medically induced into menopause at 26 as part of my treatment for ER-positive breast cancer.

Before my diagnosis, I had no idea that cancer and menopause could be so closely connected. I didn’t know that ovarian suppression could be used as part of breast cancer treatment. I didn’t know that chemotherapy could affect ovarian function. I didn’t know that removing the ovaries could cause immediate surgical menopause.

And I definitely didn’t know that I would be navigating hot flushes, brain fog, vaginal dryness, sleep disruption, changes to my mood, body, bladder before I’d even turned 30.

That’s why cancer-induced menopause, medical menopause, surgical menopause and early menopause need to be part of the wider menopause conversation.

There are far more young women living this reality than people realise.

For World Menopause and Cancer Awareness Day, I’m talking about the side of menopause that still gets left out of the conversation.

If we’re going to talk about menopause properly, we need to talk about all of it. by @wegettouchyfeely

Caroline trusted her instincts and went back.

She asked to see the doctor who had originally referred her. She kept the conversation going until somebody investigated further.

That persistence eventually led to haematology, a biopsy, a PET scan and the answers she had been looking for.

There is a lot we can take from Caroline’s story, but perhaps the biggest is this: you are allowed to question an explanation when your symptoms are still there.

Patients shouldn’t have to fight to be heard, but until we get to a place where everybody feels listened to the first time, knowing your body and feeling able to speak up matters.

Thank you, Caroline, for trusting us with your story. 🧡

Not every cancer has a screening programme. And not every symptom is one we’ve been taught to look for.

Myeloma is a type of blood cancer, and it disproportionately affects Black communities.

This isn’t about worrying over every ache or tired day.
You know your body. If something has changed, it’s worth a conversation. 🧡

Save it. Share it. Send it to the family group chat.

Why on EARTH haven’t I heard about this before???

Well tbh, we know why… technically I’m ahead of my time 🫠 but I follow mature women and health accounts that speak about menopause and I hadn’t seen much about it.

I think it’s brilliant and there should be WAY more awareness around it.

Medically and illness-induced menopause should definitely be part of these conversations because those experiences are very different contrary to what most may think.

The symptoms may overlap, but being thrown into menopause because of cancer treatment, surgery or another medical intervention can bring a completely different set of circumstances to navigate.

Seeing something like the M-Tick, helping women navigate products that may support them through menopause is SO refreshing.

Womanhood has many routes. None of them should leave you without the information you need to navigate your own body. Well done @genm_official 👏🏾👏🏾

Anyway, I’m M-Tick watching from now on ☺️ by @wegettouchyfeely

Antoinette was 39 when she was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, a rare blood cancer that starts in the plasma cells, a type of white blood cell found in the bone marrow.

What had once been something she was told was unlikely to progress had changed. A second opinion confirmed that it had.

She was 39. Nobody in her family had ever had cancer. Even her doctors told her how unusually young she was to be diagnosed.

That’s why her story is worth knowing.

Sometimes our idea of who gets cancer is shaped by the cancers we hear about the most. Multiple myeloma is still something many people couldn’t name, let alone imagine being diagnosed with at 39.

Saying like “I’m too young”, “cancer doesn’t run in my family” and “it’s unlikely to happen to me” can give us a false sense of distance from our own health.

Antoinette had every reason to think this wouldn’t become her story, until it did.

This is Antoinette. 💚

🚨This is a big one 👀
Instead of saying “stop putting it off, it’s not that bad”, this rollout gives women that have missed their smear test another option (and we love options!).

Nearly 4 million women are currently not up to date with cervical screening and we know there are a million and one reasons why someone might put that appointment off.

As of YESTERDAY, the NHS has started rolling out at-home HPV self-testing kits in England.

🏠 Do the swab yourself at home
📮 Send it back to the NHS for free
🔬 It gets tested for high-risk HPV
🏥 If HPV is found, you’ll be invited for further cervical screening

For now, it’s being rolled out in phases, starting with people aged 30–65 who have missed previous cervical screening invitations.

‼️You need to be invited - so keep an eye on your NHS App, texts, emails and post.

And one VERY important thing: HPV being found does not mean you have cervical cancer, so if comes back positive - DO NOT PANIC. 🫶🏾🧡

This is what removing barriers can look like.

More choice. More access. More people screened.

Send this to the group chat because somebody genuinely might not know this exists yet. 💌

POV: Your ovaries have been switched off for 3 years and once a month you willingly get pierced in the stomach to keep it that way 🙂🫠

Anywayyyy, come with me to get my monthly Zoladex - the kind monster that helps me to stay cancer free!

Welcome to Menopause Mami Diaries - navigating medically induced menopause in my 20s because apparently this is my niche now. 🙃

Ciao ciao 💋
