A Wildcat who made Navy history comes home 🎓⚓

Admiral (ret) Lisa M. Franchetti, a 1985 graduate of @medillschool, is the first woman to lead the U.S. Navy and the first ROTC graduate to serve as chief of naval operations. In the first of Northwestern’s Homecoming & Reunion Weekend events, she’ll deliver the 37th Annual Richard W. Leopold Lecture on the future of the U.S. military and what four decades of service taught her about leadership.

👉 Swipe to see photos from the @nu_library archives of Professor Richard W. Leopold, the diplomatic historian and beloved Northwestern teacher whose former students created this lectureship in 1990 to honor him.

📅 Thursday, Oct. 8 | 4:30 pm

What makes a Weinberg College education different? Not a major. A mindset: the curiosity to think across boundaries. The creativity to solve a problem no single field can solve alone. The connection between a classroom and the world outside it.

Welcome back to campus — and to interdisciplinary thinking 🧠

Dark matter accounts for roughly 85% of all the matter in our universe. What if we finally caught a glimpse of it?

Northwestern physicist Eric Dahl has hunted dark matter for 20 years. He describes the search like a game of pool: “It’s like an invisible cue ball collides into one of the balls. We can’t see the cue ball, but we know it’s there because the other balls start bouncing around.” 🎱

Dahl is part of @lzdarkmatter, an international experiment led by @berkeleylab that just recorded the most compelling unexplained signal yet — from a detector buried nearly a mile underground and filled with 10 tons of liquid xenon (colder than -160° F). While not an official discovery, it’s the kind of result that keeps scientists up at night.

The link in bio explains what they found and what comes next 👀

Joel Mokyr was recently named to the Andrew Carnegie Foundation’s “Great Immigrants, Great Americans” list for this year. It’s a fitting moment to share what he told our Class of 2026 at Convocation in June.

Professor Mokyr, who spoke about immigration as an economic driver, has spent more than 50 years at Northwestern — as a scholar, a mentor to more than 60 doctoral students, a Nobel laureate, and an immigrant who has lived the argument he made from the podium that day.

Congratulations, Professor Mokyr 💜 Two photos of Joel Mokyr speaking at a podium while wearing regalia at Northwestern University. Text atop them reads, "We are sending you into a world full of very difficult problems: climate change, the Middle East, a polarized polity. But some problems have straightforward solutions." taken in Northwestern University by @weinbergcollege

"My biggest takeaway from COP30 was the road-blocking that was occurring everywhere," reflects Kevin Wagner, a @polisciatnu PhD student at @northwesternu's @weinbergcollege. Wagner traveled to the world’s largest annual international treaty negotiations and climate summit, the 30th Conference of Parties (COP30) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Belém, Brazil with the support of the Roberta Buffett Institute to research how cooperation unfolds in practice within international negotiations.
