Today, we are honored to highlight Movement Leader, Ofelia Flores, Labor Advocate Organizer at MICOP (Mixteco/Indígena Community Organizing Project) @micop805

Ofelia works on the front lines of labor rights and social justice. She advocates for Indigenous migrant farmworkers who are especially vulnerable to wage theft and other labor abuses.

“Estoy muy orgullosa de mis raíces, y de estar en este espacio donde tengo la oportunidad de alzar la voz en contra de las injusticias que sufre mi comunidad, y con seguridad seguiremos adelante a pesar de las adversidades que sufrimos por ser indígenas,” Ofelia said.

Translation: "I am very proud of my roots, and to be in a space where I have the opportunity to raise my voice against the injustices my community faces. We will continue moving forward despite the adversity we experience as Indigenous people," Ofelia said.

We're proud to stand with Ofelia and MICOP in uplifting Indigenous voices and building power in California. by @weingartfoundation

An equitable recovery for Altadena means supporting small businesses with the capital and resources they need to rebuild. That's why we’re proud to partner with @pacificcommunityventures to provide local and BIPOC business owners with low-cost capital, coaching, and technical assistance.

"Recovery is strongest when local entrepreneurs have the resources and power to lead it,” said Bulbul Gupta, President and C.E.O. of Pacific Community Ventures. “Weingart’s partnership allows Pacific Community Ventures to support Altadena’s small businesses and those impacted by the Eaton Fire, with the capital and high-touch expertise they need to restore opportunity, advance economic growth, counter further displacement, and help chart a path toward a stronger, more resilient Los Angeles community.”

Today, we shine a light on the Pop Culture Collaborative (@popcollab), an organization building narrative power for a just future. Our support of their work is rooted in our belief that advancing justice requires changing the stories that shape how we understand our history, one another, and what is possible.

“Together, we are supercharging strategies and ecosystems that reach millions of people and expand whose stories and experiences are centered in mainstream culture,” said Bridgit Antoinette Evans, C.E.O., Pop Culture Collaborative. “By strengthening the field and helping them coordinate around a shared vision of a more just and pluralist America, Weingart is investing in the cultural conditions needed for multiracial democracy and collective thriving.”

63 years ago, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr delivered his visionary “I Have a Dream Speech.” As we commemorate this moment in history, we also reaffirm our commitment to the leaders, organizations and communities doing the hard work to turn that dream into a lived reality for all.

At the Weingart Foundation, we firmly believe that those closest to the challenges hold the answers, the wisdom, and the solutions to build a more just future. Realizing Dr. King’s dream requires us to actively co-create a liberated future where every community thrives. by @weingartfoundation

Lasting change begins with communities. Across Southern California, people are organizing, preserving culture, rebuilding neighborhoods, and creating new pathways to opportunity. Our latest round of grantmaking and program related investments directs $14.4 million to nonprofit partners that are strengthening the conditions communities need not only to respond to today’s challenges, but to shape their own future.

“This moment calls for innovative approaches rooted in partnership, trust, and a belief that communities hold the solutions to our most urgent challenges,” said Joanna S. Jackson, President and C.E.O. “Our role is to listen, learn, and invest alongside community leaders as they shape a future where every person belongs, every community has the opportunity to thrive, and everyone can share in a more just and prosperous future.”

August is Black Philanthropy Month, a global movement to inspire Black-led giving. As California’s first and only Black community foundation, the Black Freedom Fund (B.F.F.) (@blackfreedomfund) stands as a powerful example of the spirit of Black Philanthropy Month.

At Weingart Foundation, we are proud to have played a part in growing this crucial fund which is the largest pooled fund for the Black community in the nation. In just six years, B.F.F. has invested over $52 million into Black communities, representing the largest pooled transfer of wealth to Black organizing in U.S. history.

After the Eaton fire devastated Altadena, B.F.F. launched the Black L.A. Relief & Recovery Fund, deploying over $7 million to local organizations providing housing, food, and mental health support and building power for a community-led recovery. By building capacity and catalyzing philanthropy, the Black Freedom Fund shows us what community-led recovery and true equity look like by @weingartfoundation
