POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Hi there! We’re Alex and Kristen, Indy-based millennials by age but boomers at heart. By that, we mean we dream of retirement so we can spend all our time lost in books. We have a soft spot for the quirky, the morbid, and the wonderfully weird—with a little bit of everything else thrown in. 🐾📖

What to expect from us:
🔍 Amateur Recommendations: Whether they’re good or not, we don’t know, but we can’t shut up about them.
📚 Book Buying Addiction: We love a good bookstore and are VERY good customers for Indy’s indie bookstores 😁.
🎉 Existential Crises: We hide in books to forget about our existential dread… and our jobs.
🐶 Strange and judgmental dogs: We are obsessed with our dogs and let’s be honest, they judge everything we do. Especially our book choices.

If you want to stumble along this journey with us, give us follow us and let’s get reading! 📚❤️

Last week I spent the week babysitting my 2.5 year old niece while the sibs traveled to Australia. I did almost no reading of my own while I was there (toddler parents who read.. how?!) but my brother brought me back this awesome Aussie edition of Time Travel for Beginners by Jaclyn Moriarty. I don’t read a lot of books that have sprayed edges editions, and am obsessed with this one! Hope to get to it later this fall. Also very convenient that it says “My sister is a literary genius” on the front 😇

Swipe to the last slide to see the books I read the most of throughout the week, highly recommend 😉 (also pro tip from my niece, when you get 2 books before bed, make sure one of them is a 304 page bind up of Christmas stories!)

September was a crazy month! I traveled a lot, so had more audio than usual, but really liked most things I read… none I wouldn’t recommend at least to the right people! I finally got to Perfection by Vincenzo Lateonico and it was the perfect millennial existential thought exercise. My one ARC was Said the Dead, which was really good but I also immediately need to reread physically (I had the audio and I think I missed too much!)

I also kept on my rereading trend and reread Sleeping Giants by Sylvain Neuvel. I read it physically forever ago and did this time on audio - such a a great audiobook! Hopefully will continue rereading the series this month.

In the middle of a couple books on my 26 in 26 so hopefully will have an update there soon… and so excited for Fall reading!! 🍂🍁

Ok my last post about my birthday 😂 but earlier this year @bookstagramonabudget posted about a really cool gift her husband got her, and I decided to copy for myself for my birthday. And because I make everything more complicated, I’m also going to give myself a challenge to read all of these this year.

The challenge was to find books published in my birth year (1986!) that align with some of my current reading tastes and try them out. I put together a list of about 12 books and decided I’d try to find as many as possible at my local used bookstores, thinking I may get 3-5. Across 6 stores, I found 8 on my list and 4 of them were first editions! I may continue to look for the last few on my list throughout the year just because it was so much fun hunting, but here’s what I’ve got so far.

🖤 Mama by Terry McMillan
🖤 Anagrams by Lorrie Moore
🖤 A Summons to Memphis by Peter Taylor
🖤 The New York Trilogy by Paul Auster (shout out to @abhalovesbooks who recommended this to me when I was in a reading slump - I read the first part before having to return it to the library and really enjoyed it!)
🖤 The Beet Queen by Louise Erdrich
🖤 The Counterlife by Philip Roth
🖤 The Prince of Tides by Pat Conroy
🖤 A Perfect Spy by John le Carré

This was so fun to do so I am excited to get to reading! Has anyone read any of these?

I cannot come to my favorite place without visiting my favorite bookstore (shoutout @cottagebooks !).

I grabbed All We Say by Ben Rhodes which I’ve already read, but wanted to own and read again slower in pieces. And picked up Giovanni’s Room which I feel like is always the one Baldwin places don’t have, and is definitely the next one I want to pick up!

I brought 6 books with me and only read 2.5, but what’s adding another 2?

Happy weekend!

I know we’re already halfway through the week but I came up north to the lake for Labor Day week and as always brought way more books than necessary 😇 Honestly, I didn’t even intend to read a ton this week, but I just couldn’t decide!

I did finally finish Perfection today and loved it. Then I put up a poll and On Earth as it is Beneath won, so I got started on that! Since I brought some shorties, I may be able to finish 2 more before heading home… we’ll see. We also brought a LOT of crafts so there has been more crafting and Gilmore Girl-ing than reading haha.

I’m also eyeing Elena Knows since that has shown up on just about every TBR I’ve made in the last 8 months… maybe soon 😂

I haven’t posted a review in months and I want to get back to it - these two books I read in May are certainly worthy of their own spot on the grid! I had never read Baldwin before and was determined to change that this year. My first Baldwin quickly turned into my second.

I started with If Beale Street Could Talk which was my book club’s pick for the month. Beale Street destroyed me in the best way. Baldwin builds two families as completely opposing theories of what love is, one that fractures under pressure and one that keeps expanding outward, pulling in strangers and making them family. What hit me most was how every act of kindness was also an act of resistance and Baldwin builds a system that must be rallied against without ever having to give us one villain’s face to carry the weight, we just see its victims. The ending doesn’t give full resolution, but isn’t any less powerful for it.

I went straight from Beale Street to pick up The Fire Next Time, where Baldwin steps out from behind the fiction and says the quiet part at full volume. The letter to his nephew extends empathy to people perpetuating the system, not because he owes it, but because he understands dismantling an entire worldview is terrifying. But the empathy never becomes an excuse. One thing that wrecked me in his writing was his observation about the fear a Black parent feels when their child first believes they can do anything a white child can. Holding both hope and resignation that the world is the way it is at the same time is exhausting. Towards the end, Baldwin says “White Americans cannot divest themselves of the notion that they possess some intrinsic value Black people need or want” names something I’ve not seen said so clearly before. It’s a particular narcissism that can’t imagine Black people already as complete without transforming into something “more palatable”.

Clearly I’m officially a Baldwin fan and these two books are both must reads for me. Where should I go next within his backlist?

If you loved My Brilliant Friend, read Marlena by Julie Buntin!

I read My Brilliant Friend last summer and read Marlena maybe 8-9 years ago, but with Buntin’s new book out, it reminded me that I wanted to reread Marlena. I liked it even more the second time around!

If you’re drawn to friendships that read like love stories (however doomed), Marlena is a perfect book to add to your TBR - and is under 300 pages! While MBF starts out in post-war Naples, Italy, Marlena takes place in rural Northern Michigan. Both books follow one girl watching, worshipping, and maybe slowly losing the other, but sure the whole time their friend is somehow living more life than her - more dangerous and more real.

I haven’t continued on yet in the Neapolitan Quartet, but I was constantly thinking about Elena and Lina as I read Marlena, and can’t wait to read book two.

Anyone else read both of these? Do you see the tie?! Would love to know what you think!

My eyes were bigger than my… eyes? Or brain? 😂 Not sure the appropriate application of that here but I’m traveling for work this week and I was sure all my hours of hotel time would be perfect for knocking out a couple short novellas… guess who didn’t read at all??

Even though we’re not too busy and I’m usually in bed by 7 (super early dinners and no partying over here 😂), just being out of my routine tires me out so much!

All that to say… these are two translated novellas that I’m hoping to get to this month! Really excited about both, and maybe when I get home this weekend I can hunker down with the pup and knock a few out. This will be my third Haushofer, but my first from Ana Paula Maia.

When you travel, does that help you read more? Or does getting out of your routine make you read less? Trying to kick a slump over here!

One month from today is my 40th birthday!🎉

A couple of months ago, Whitney @bookstagramonabudget posted her birthday haul where her husband bought a stack of books from her birth year, and I thought that was so cool I decided to do it for myself 😁

I’ve got a list of about 15 books published in 1986 that I’m looking for (may be some overlap with Whitney’s!!) and I found my first one yesterday! I’m hoping to keep hunting and find 6-8 of my list that I can read throughout my 40th year (or technically my 41st, but you know…)

So my first pick is The Beet Queen by Louise Erdrich, and somehow I was lucky enough to find a first edition! It’s crazy to turn to the “other books by this author” page for Erdrich and see just one other novel.

I know there are a lot of Erdrich fans here - anyone read this one yet??

T minus 31 days until 40!! Let’s see how many I can find… by @weirdlywellread
