In 1985, Rolf and his sons Bernard and Peter Welke decided to build something different: a brokerage run on passion, precision, and actually caring where your goods end up. It started with shipping magazines...

Forty years later, Derek and Jordan run Welke - the same family business, the same promises, better technology.

We’re still family-owned. We’re still owner-led. And we still answer the phone.

There’s a decent chance you’re owed money you’ve never claimed 💰

If you imported goods, paid duty on them, and later exported them, that duty may be recoverable. It’s called duty drawback. It’s an established program, not a loophole.

So why does almost nobody claim it?

Because it’s not really a customs problem. It’s a records problem. You have to match specific imports to specific exports across your inventory, and most companies look at that, estimate the effort, and quietly decide it isn’t worth it.

Sometimes they’re right. Often they’re very wrong, and nobody ever ran the numbers to find out.

There are three ways to approach it depending on your volume, one-off applications, periodic spreadsheet filings, or perpetual inventory tracking for high-volume importers.

Worth ten minutes to find out which one you are. mailto:info@welke.com

Tuesday we explained what a customs broker does. Here’s the other half ✈️🚢

A freight forwarder moves the goods. Booking space, choosing the mode, routing, consolidating, handling the documentation, and fixing it when a vessel rolls or a flight gets cut.

We don’t own ships or planes, and that’s the point. A forwarder isn’t locked into one carrier’s network, so your routing gets picked on what actually suits the shipment rather than what’s empty this week.

Here’s why it matters that we do both: routing affects clearance, and classification affects documentation. When your forwarder and your broker are two separate companies, that handoff is exactly where things go missing, and neither one owns the problem.

Ocean, air and ground. Moved and cleared, one team, one file.

If you had to explain what your customs broker does, could you? 🤔

Most importers can’t, and that’s not a knock on them. It’s one of those services you buy because you have to, and the detail stays invisible until something goes wrong.

So here’s the plain version. We classify your goods, we file your entry with CBSA or CBP, and we keep a record that holds up if anyone asks years later.

One thing worth untangling: clearing goods and moving goods are two different jobs. A broker handles the border. A freight forwarder arranges the transport. Plenty of people use the words interchangeably, and they shouldn’t. We do both.

Swipe through, and if any of this is news, that’s worth a conversation. mailto:info@welke.com

⏰ Six weeks. That’s the whole window.

2027 tariff rate quota applications for dairy, poultry and eggs opened October 1 and close November 15.

No changes to ministerial allocation policies for 2027 under WTO, CETA, CPTPP or CUSMA — which is exactly why these get missed. Nothing changed, so nobody gets a reminder.

Miss it and you spend a year buying on the open market instead.

“Any update?” 📧

If your team sends that email more than once a week, the problem isn’t really the shipment.

Delays happen. Weather, congestion, an exam, some of it nobody controls. What you can control is whether finding out costs your team half a day.

The real expense in a delay is rarely the delay. It’s the four emails, the two phone calls, and the person who spent an afternoon chasing a status that should have been on a screen.

Status, documents, history, reporting, all in one place, without asking anyone. That’s what MyWelke is for.

Duties and excluded are not the same thing ⚠️

As of September 29, covered Canadian alcohol, dairy and motor vehicle products can’t enter the U.S. at all. No warehouse. No FTZ. No in-bond move. Entries get rejected outright.

But scope is narrow and specific; the annex language decides whether your product is actually covered.

Swipe to see what changed, and send this to whoever files your entries.

Questions about your classification? mailto:info@welke.com, we’d rather talk it through early than sort it out after.

October arrived with no shortage of moving parts 📜

New U.S. import exclusions took effect September 29. Section 338 duty scope was reworked mid-month. Freight rates are pulling in opposite directions depending on the lane you’re watching.

Swipe for the five things most likely to touch your shipments this month — then read the full Welke Wire at the link in bio.

If any of it applies to what you’re moving, don’t wait for a rejected entry or a surprise invoice to find out. That’s what we’re here for.
Enjoy the journey.

Ocean is your plan. Air is your plan when the plan breaks.

A rolled booking in late September doesn’t cost you a week. It costs you the holiday. And the pressure lands exactly where you’d expect, on air, from importers who suddenly need three pallets to arrive on the original date.

Air freight from the Far East to North America averaged $6.52 per kg last week, running roughly 25% above the same point last year on higher jet fuel costs (Freightos Air Index, September 15, 2026). Capacity going into Q4 is expected to be tight on some Asia–U.S. lanes.

The move is rarely all-air. It’s usually: identify the SKUs that genuinely can’t wait, put those on a plane, leave the rest on the water, and stop paying premium rates for inventory nobody’s waiting on.

Ocean, air, sea-air, drayage, inland. One team choosing between them on your behalf, not one mode trying to be the answer to everything. Enjoy the journey. ✈️

If you export to the United States, today is a date to check against your product list.

As of 12:01 a.m. ET this morning, specified Canadian-origin goods are prohibited from importation into the U.S. under Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930. The prohibitions cover certain alcoholic beverages, certain dairy products and certain motorcycles, identified by tariff line in the proclamation annexes.

The distinction that matters: this is not a duty increase. A tariff makes a shipment more expensive. A prohibition means the goods don’t enter at all.

Two things to verify. First, your exact HTS classification against the annexes, category descriptions in news coverage are not the legal scope. Second, your entry dates, because the trigger is when goods are entered for consumption, not when they shipped.

If you’re not certain where your products land, ask. That’s what a licensed broker is for.

Mid-Autumn Festival begins today.

Across China and much of East and Southeast Asia, offices close, factories quiet down, and people travel home. Mooncakes get shared, lanterns go up, and the year’s work pauses for a few days.

Welke moves freight through a network of more than 150 overseas agents. A lot of them are with their families this weekend, the people who confirm a booking at 3 a.m. our time, chase a document, find space on a vessel that was full an hour ago.

Global trade runs on relationships in a lot of time zones. Today a good number of ours are exactly where they should be.

To our partners and their families—中秋节快乐. 🥮🏮

A quoted ocean rate is a port-to-port number. Your actual cost is a door-to-door number. The gap between them is where most freight budgets go wrong.

Sitting on top of that quote: terminal handling, peak season surcharges, general rate increases, bunker adjustments, documentation. Then customs entry, duty and tax. Then drayage and inland delivery.

And if the box sits, demurrage, detention, storage, re-delivery. Those aren’t rare events. They’re what happens when a booking rolls and nobody tells you until the vessel has sailed.

The cheapest line on a rate sheet regularly produces the highest landed cost. Ask for the full picture instead, and ask who’s accountable when a leg slips.

One partner, one invoice, freight and customs charges broken out per shipment. Enjoy the journey.
