Sharing what I learn & love
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Hey, I’m Natalie! I’m so excited to start this page and share my journey. I’m currently studying kinesiology and working toward becoming a registered nurse. Through my studies, internships, and experiences, I’ve learned how much chronic disease affects so many of us, and this sparked my interest in understanding why that is. I’ve developed a passion for how nutrition, physical activity, and mental health all play a significant role in living a healthier, happier life.

I know life can get overwhelming, especially as a college student, and it can be tough to prioritize health when juggling so much. Over time, family and friends have asked me about food swaps, and staying on track. After one of those conversations with my dad, I realized that creating this page could be a great way to share what I’ve learned so far and continue learning along the way. This is also a way for me to hold myself accountable and stay motivated while sharing what I love.

I’m definitely not perfect, and I don’t have all the answers, but I believe that small steps can lead to big changes. If anyone gets inspired or takes a small step toward better health, that would be an added bonus! Let’s see what the new year brings us! by @wellnesslifewithnat

Sourdough baking has become a new hobby of mine so I thought it would be great to talk about carbohydrates!!

Carbohydrates (carbs) break down into glucose, which enters the bloodstream and is used by the body for energy. Carbs are essential for preventing fatigue and supporting a healthy metabolism. The key isn’t eliminating carbs, it’s choosing the right kind.

Complex carbohydrates are digested more slowly because they contain fiber. This leads to steadier blood sugar levels, which helps keep energy, mood, and the body’s systems stable.

In contrast, refined carbohydrates cause rapid spikes in blood sugar followed by quick crashes. Frequent spikes can lead to increased hunger shortly after eating and contribute to insulin resistance over time. Think of a kids sugar high and crash. It’s a similar process when consuming foods like white bread, pastries, or white pasta.

This matters so much because our body is always trying to get back to a state of balance!! Big spikes and crashes force the body to over use trying to correct, which stresses our body over time.

Sourdough is unique because fermentation can make it easier to digest, support gut health, and help with blood sugar balance compared to refined breads.

Examples of complex carbs:
-Sweet potatoes
-Chickpea pasta/ Chickpeas
-Quinoa
-Beans & lentils
-Bananas
-Squash by @wellnesslifewithnat

Summer classes are done!! On that note here’s a little update….I realized I’ve always been someone who strives for growth constantly pushing to do more, and improve anyway I can. While that mindset can be a strength, I’ve come to learn that sometimes I never give myself permission to just be.

This summer, I let myself slow down. I gave myself space to appreciate where I’m at, instead of always focusing on how I can do more. It’s not about stopping the growth it’s about realizing that rest, reflection, and gratitude are part of the journey too.

So here’s a little reminder: keep chasing growth, knowing there is always room for more, but don’t forget to reflect and notice how far you’ve already come 💛 by @wellnesslifewithnat

I previously posted tips on building meals, what to look for on food labels, and some swaps. Understanding why these foods matter is just as important. For me understanding the importance leads me to making changes.

I’ve said before that your metabolic health is affected by the things you fuel your body with. From the moment you consume something, your body begins a series of processes to digest, absorb, and use nutrients, while sending signals throughout your system. This isn’t meant to overwhelm people with a ton of information, but to emphasize the importance of why these things matter.

Wanted to share something I’ve been working on for my grandma and mom. They’ve been asking me for guidance, so I created a chart to make it easier for them to refer back to. There is definitely more out there but this is just some things and examples I’ve learned from the book Good Energy.

Focusing on nutrition can feel overwhelming at first because there’s so much information to take in. What’s worked best for me is starting small taking note, learning as I go, and gradually making small swaps over time. Trying to change everything all at once can feel overwhelming, and it’s harder for those new habits to stick. Also balance is key! by @wellnesslifewithnat

Your Gut: The second brain

Your gut and brain are completely connected. Your gut actually makes up 90% of your serotonin, the chemical responsible for helping you feel happy and balanced.

When we fuel our bodies with processed foods, sugar, and unhealthy fats, we disrupt the balance of good bacteria in our gut. This imbalance known as dysbiosis can lower serotonin levels and ramp up inflammation. But the best thing is you’re in control, and it’s not just about the food you eat, exercise can be a game changer too.

When you exercise it:
- Increases serotonin production in the brain.
- Improves gut health by the growth of beneficial bacteria.
- Reduces stress hormones like cortisol.
- Enhances your sleep, which is important for gut repair and overall health.

I noticed firsthand how eating more processed foods left me feeling anxious and stressed. But the moment I started fueling my body with whole foods and making exercise a regular habit, my mental and physical heath improved. Even the smallest changes, like going for a walk every day, can have a massive impact on your mood and energy levels.

Monday reset🤸

Little belief I have:
Sometimes it’s not just about the “genes”. I’ve watched family members struggle with chronic disease, and I realized that habits and lifestyle choices can be passed down too. Never think your health is completely predetermined!! You can break some of those cycles, not just for you, but for your family too! by @wellnesslifewithnat

Metabolic health is how your body uses energy, impacting everything from your mood to long term health. When it’s balanced, you feel energized and less stressed, but when it’s off, you feel tired and crave sugar with other things.

Here’s an analogy that helped me explain it to my brother: imagine putting diesel fuel in a car that doesn’t take diesel. It messes up the system, and by the time it reaches the engine (your mitochondria), things break down. The car also needs to be used regularly. If it sits too long, parts get rusty, and the engine won’t start. That’s like your metabolism. If you don’t move or fuel your body with the right foods, everything slows down.

The good news is that small changes make a big difference. Find ways to add more movement to your day. Eat whole foods like sweet potatoes, veggies, berries, and healthy fats like avocado. I like to prep fruits, veggies, and proteins for the week to make quick, healthy meals easier!

Stress is key too. I learned writing down three things you’re grateful for each day can lower cortisol, which when high can disrupt your metabolism.

When you start seeing nutrition and exercise as fuel for how your body runs and feels, it can totally change your perspective. by @wellnesslifewithnat

This week, I’m back at school early for sorority recruitment and decided to do a big grocery run and meal prep! With busy days and short breaks ahead, I want to make sure I’m fueling my body with good, nutritious meals to feel my best.

With that being said, I wanted to talk about one of the most important things I’ve learned: seed oils (like canola, soybean, peanut, and sunflower oil). They’re in so many processed and packaged foods, but they aren’t always the best for us. Seed oils are highly processed and high in omega-6 fatty acids. Having too much of this compared to omega-3 fatty acids can lead to chronic inflammation, which occurs when your body’s immune system stays overactive for too long. Something many of us don’t even realize is happening. I know I didn’t!

I’ve learned that chronic inflammation has been linked to major issues like heart disease and diabetes, but inflammation doesn’t always show up in extreme ways. It can look like bloating, poor digestion, along with many other things. I’ve dealt with this myself, and when I started paying attention to the ingredients in my food, I realized that almost everything I was eating contained seed oils.

But don’t worry! Seed oils are in so much of what we eat, and cutting them out completely isn’t realistic, but it’s not impossible either. What I did was start small. I began looking at the ingredients in my food and swapping seed oils for things like olive oil, avocado oil, or coconut oil when I could. Over time, I noticed my symptoms started to get better.

This is just something that’s helped me, and I wanted to share it in case it might help someone else. Even small changes can add up to make a big difference! by @wellnesslifewithnat
