POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

These stories absolutely captivated and terrified me growing up. I was constantly checking them out from the school library, fully knowing the illustrations were going to haunt me later and deciding future me could deal with it.

So when @litjoycrate created this edition, there was really no question. I needed it.

LitJoy is actually local to me, and they make some of my absolute favorite special editions, but I think they completely outdid themselves with this one. The creepy artwork, the metal details, the skeleton hands holding the book closed, the illustrated edges… every part of it feels like such a perfect tribute to the books that traumatized an entire generation of little readers.

This might genuinely be one of my favorite special editions I own.

And yes, Stephen Gammell’s illustrations are somehow still just as unsettling as I remembered. 😭

Please tell me I wasn’t the only kid repeatedly checking these out from the library even though they scared the absolute hell out of me.#ScaryStoriesToTellInTheDark #LitJoy #SpecialEditionBooks #HorrorBooks #Bookstagram by @wellreadashlee

If autumn had a soundtrack it would be rain against an old train window and the rustling pages of a book. 🍂 #Bookstagram #AutumnReading #GothicReads #BookishAesthetic #HeberValleyRailroad taken in Heber Valley Railroad by @wellreadashlee

I just finished A Short Stay in Hell and I am having a bit of an existential crisis.

This book was incredibly well written, deeply unsettling, and way more profound than I expected. I almost don’t know how to rate it because I can recognize how good it was while also kind of hating the experience of reading it.

This was not because it was bad, but because of what it made me think about.

It’s one of those books that gets under your skin and then just… stays there. I want to recommend it because I desperately need people to talk about it with, but I also feel weird recommending it because I don’t know if I want to inflict this level of existential dread on anyone else. 😂

If you’ve already read this, please message me because I need to discuss what the hell (ha) I just read.

Also shout out because the author lives in my hometown 🤗

September’s Book of the Month
picks for me. Obviously as per usual I can’t stick with one genre.

I picked:

Kiss Slay Repeat by Rachel Harrison
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy by John le Carré
Fallow by Sarah Anderson

As always I’m super excited for a good horror/thriller. I have gotten every one of BOTMs centennial editions because they are beautiful and I love classics. For Fallow the cover and synopsis are what really got me.

This is exactly why I love picking my BOTM books every month. I never know what mood I’m going to be in, so I just choose whatever sounds interesting and let future me figure it out.

Which one would you start with first?

I was obsessed with Goosebumps growing up, so when I saw this candle set from @goosecreekco I had to have it. This feels like the perfect combination of spooky nostalgia + things I absolutely did not need but clearly had to have. Then they threw in Night of the Living Dummy as a really cool bonus. I’m obsessed.

Which Goosebumps book scared you the most as a kid?

The rainy weather has been deciding our plans for us, and I have been loving it.

Reading, building blanket forts, movie theater popcorn, watching Clue and appreciating the absolute legend that was Tim Curry. 🖤 Basically my ideal kind of day.

July, as per usual, showed off my chaotic reading taste, but in the best way.

I got ritual sacrifice, a wellness retreat from hell, women slowly unraveling under impossible expectations, and then, naturally, another completely unhinged trip into the dungeon.

Ratings were all over the place, but The Yellow Wallpaper and Other Stories and This Inevitable Ruin were the clear standouts for me this month.

I’ve accepted that my reading taste is basically: if it’s weird, unsettling, emotional, or slightly deranged, I’m probably interested.
