Tallin is a medieval gem ๐Ÿฐ ! Loved my time there with the #climatequilts team. ๐ŸŒธ In addition to attending the Climate Quilts Conference, I visited the Maritime History Museum โš“๏ธ๐Ÿšข, met a colleague at the Estonian Art Academy, ๐ŸŽจ and explored the beautiful, colourful city, including cultural centres and community gardens. โ˜˜๏ธ Weather couldnโ€™t be better ๐Ÿ˜๐ŸŒฆ๏ธ

๐Ÿซ– Its been about a month since my exhibition, UNBROKEN - Bouke de Vries, closed at Keramiekmuseum Princessehof. Everything is packed and cleared and the new exhibition, Koffie, will soon open. Its been the most wonderful experience and the stats indicate it's phenomenal impact: 61,000 visitors ๐Ÿ’ฅ that's 50% more than they had hoped would come, ๐Ÿ‘€ a sold-out publication (2 reprints!) ๐Ÿ“• and 9.3 visitor appreciation score ; the highest they have had for ANY exhibition ever! ๐Ÿ’ฏ And most importantly - an estimated 6 million euro contribution from visitors to the local economy. So much gratitude to (the one and only) Bouke and the staff of Fries Museum & Keramiekmuseum Princessehof who made it happen! As far as I'm concerned; JOB REALLY WELL DONE! ๐Ÿฅ‚ taken in Keramiekmuseum Princessehof by @wendygers

What remains?
How did the first inhabitants of the *wierden* (artificial dwelling mounds) relate to death? For this work, Leonard Witte explored the rituals in which people and landscape converge. Through 54 incised and glazed tiles, he depicts how the deceased were locally entrusted to the animals around them in the Iron Age period.

The installation is part of a group show called Surroundings, and part of โ€˜Over le(u)ven
een kunstroute door Het Hogelandโ€™.

Fantastic installation near #Winsum, #groningen ๐Ÿ™Œ to the artists!

๐Ÿฅ Thrilled to be presenting in the upcoming international symposium, Longquan: Celadon through Time and Space on 25 September at the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam ๐Ÿงฉ

Renowned for its luminous blue-green glaze and exceptional craftsmanship, Longquan celadon occupies a distinguished place in the history of Chinese ceramics. Emerging in Zhejiang during the Song dynasty, Longquan ware circulated widely through maritime and overland trade networks, reaching East Asia, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. Across these regions, it was traded and used in everyday life, admired and collected as an art form, and interpreted through diverse cultural traditions.

The symposium approaches Longquan celadon from multiple perspectives, including archaeology and technology, kiln organization and production, trade and circulation, histories of collecting, museum practices, conservation, and contemporary artistic reinterpretation. By tracing the movement of objects across time and regions, it seeks to illuminate how Longquan ware has been made, used, valued, collected, and reimagined in different cultural contexts.

My presentation explores the awesome celadon work of @jkeep_artpottery

Contributors represent institutions including the China Academy of Art, the Longquan Research Institute, the Longquan Celadon Museum, Leiden University, the Rijksmuseum, Wereldmuseum, the Princessehof National Museum of Ceramics, the Groninger Museum, and my employer, Hanze University of Applied Sciences.

Free admission. Registration now open via the KVVAK event page. taken in Rijksmuseum by @wendygers

Craft and War explores issues of fabrication, makers, objects, uses and users throughout conflicts across the world to provide a critical understanding of the relationship between craft and contexts of war.

โ€˜These essays air out marvelous examples of humanityโ€™s dirty laundry by identifying many a โ€˜subversive stitchโ€™ (often by a woman) that realized survival and resistance โ€“ and also distinct ways that craft has been co-opted into a nationalist symbol. The authors illuminate specific instances when the human penchant for genocide and civil war disrupted indigenous and artisanal knowledge and savor the expansive field of crafted objects as an immense archive of lived experience and emotions.โ€™ โ€“ Ezra Shales, Massachusetts College of Art and Design, USA

Over the years I have regularly visited the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge. My recent visit was tinged with sadness as many of the vitrines were empty (due to works on the windows) and the hallowed museum felt run-down and tired ๐Ÿ˜ช. Like an aging friend who has lost interest in the world ๐ŸŒ Despite this disheveled appearance, there were lots of treasures to be spotted and gems ๐Ÿ’Ž that I had forgotten!
