āļøNew Offering!āļø

I am proud to offer verbal and physical self-defense, boundary-setting, and community-defense/bystander training workshops and lessons!

These offerings are adaptable and collaborative. They can include things like exploring ways to use your voice and intuition, striking/grappling skills from seated or standing positions, and ground fighting, depending on the needs of the group and each person.

They are meant to build confidence, amplify the power you already have, and even be fun.

Workshops can be anywhere from 1 hour to 4 hours.

DM me or comment BRAVE and I’ll send you a PDF one-sheet about these offerings!

I learned so much as a member of one of the cohorts of the Boulder Fire Rescue Community Academy 2026! We learned about not only the work they do with urban and structural fires, but also about wildland firefighting. Right now I know the latter is on a lot of our minds. I’m sitting here writing this from Oregon, where I can see a giant plume of smoke in the distance. I know we have seen our fair share of these plumes in Boulder County as well. I know we are all aware of how dangerous these fires can be and how much work it is to contain them.

I’m so thankful and in awe of what firefighters do to keep us safe and protect our community. We also learned about the many things they do beyond firefighting: hazmat control, emergency medical services, water rescue (I volunteered to put on the gear and ā€œsaveā€ one of the aforementioned brave souls), and more.

Thank you so much to Public Information Officer, Jamie Barker, Chief Michael Calderazzo, and everyone who made this a successful learning experience, including the other members of the academy.

I highly recommend applying for the next one.

Yes, that’s me with the hose.

UPDATE: We did it! Thank you for helping me raise $500!

I will be participating in Habitat for Humanity’s Pride Build on June 27th and I want to raise $500 in honor of my 50th birthday next week to help ensure that EVERYONE has a place to call home.

It is a dark time in this country. I will continue to fight for housing justice and Queer/LGBTQIA+ justice as long as I humanly can. We all deserve to live and love and to be loved.

Join me. Link in bio to donate. Let’s be a *trillion* candles in the dark.

I have been enjoying teaching private/semi-private lessons over at @chromajiujitsu !

If you’re new to this martial art, and want to get a few lessons in before trying out a class situation, or you have some experience but want to improve elements of your game and movement, please reach out! $80 for up to 2 people.

Here is an awesome testimonial I received recently:

ā€œProfessor Wendy is a bright light who not only says she wants to help, but follows through with vigor, which is a true commodity. She is forever cultivating her own knowledge, which is already extensive,Ā as evidenced in the number of times I have ended up in herĀ triangles. Though I’m tough, I struggle deeply with imposter syndrome andĀ where to start, and she makes me feel welcome to show up and improve. Every time I see her, I learn something interesting and useful, and she actively helps me find methodical direction in my learning withĀ intelligence and fun. Perhaps the best part in this is how often I laugh and calm down in her presence, which helps me retain techniqueĀ without feeling judged. I feel incredibly lucky to be receiving her training, and honestly, the confidence she gives me each time means the most to someone like me.ā€

Once a month I do a group workout with some of my clients. I generally try to make working out fun, but these workouts take it up a notch, as evidenced by this screenshot.

I’m very serious and passionate about movement, and I also don’t take it too seriously. I invite everyone to move with certain prompts in these workouts to keep some structure but I let them know they can just be there with all of us and move in the way they need to move, or just lie down, that day.

I’m so thankful for my clients. They have helped me keep the best job I have ever had going. They tell me where they are at every time we meet and we go from there.

This is also an example of how we can use technology for good. We traveled around the world and into space and into imaginary worlds the other day! We let those virtual spaces inform our movement here on terra firma. Can you see evidence of my theater background here?

DM me if you’re interested in knowing more and seeing if we might be a good fit. I offer 15-minute complimentary chats on the phone or zoom - we can also do something text-based if that’s more accessible. We can be as silly or not silly as you like.

I have *basic* conversational skills in ASL and Spanish if that’s helpful - I am always working towards more competency in those languages.

The shot on the lower right is at the beach with a palm tree and the ocean in each square I or one of my clients is reaching our hands out and making a silly pose. by @wendykinalllc

I made a cutting board! I love it - it came out so beautifully. I had such a blast at @groundworksartlab at their Woodworking Sampler class this past month!

We got introduced to many of the tools in the woodshop and safety was of utmost importance. I met some cool new people and we applauded each others’ turns at the saws and machines.

So fun - it made my brain focus on just one thing for awhile, which was nice in this uncertain and chaotic world. We made truly functional art. I made a digital rendering at home that got transformed into a tangible thing at the shop. A good combo of technology working alongside creativity for me.

One of the best parts about this place is they offer a lot of pay-what-you-can classes, in a variety of studio arts. That’s how I was able to participate. I highly recommend checking out their classes… wood! clay! printmaking! glass! metal!

I will definitely be back for more.

Thank you Eric, Tobias, and my classmates and @groundworksartlab

I turn 50 this year. Last night I got my black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. It took me 15 years.

I’m so proud of myself.

What a way to head into the next decade of my life.

It was a long and winding journey to get to this point. I moved across the country, a pandemic started, I’ve had 3 surgeries since 2020 not to mention the daily mental and physical symptoms (and dozen or so hospitalizations) I deal with due to Crohn’s Disease.

But I have always found my way back to the mat.

I had to take long periods of time off, and the older I got the more interested I was in finding people who share values either me to train with. Our lives are literally in each other’s hands so I want to know a bit about who is out there with me. It took awhile to find a spot that I was happy with, where I felt supported. I found training buddies online from around the continent and the world, and I realized I wasn’t alone. I was so happy to find @chromajiujitsu - you may notice in the photos we are a colorful bunch.

I love teaching. I love traveling and training. I love learning. BJJ has helped me make new friends. It’s challenged me. It’s made me strong AF. It’s given me community.

In my speech I challenged everyone to keep taking care of one another. And I myself want to continue to ask ā€œhow can I be a good training partner to you today?ā€

Thank you to everyone for your support. That’s how we keep going.

More from Maui. People, creatures, sun, surf, crafts, culture, food! And wind. Almost like Colorado…

People ask why my business is primarily online. Well part of the reason is I can travel and work some while I’m in different places. That enables me to spend a little more time in a spot and get to know it better.

The people I met and the things I learned made my heart and soul full. ā™„ļø My plane wing flying over the coast of Maui by @wendykinalllc
