Somewhere Over The Rainbow - Harold Arlen, 1939. My teacher and mentor, Bill Tapia passed this piece down to me when I was 12, teaching it entirely by ear. I carried it with me for years, eventually performing it at my UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music audition for Kenny Burrell. Your boy got in, and was the first ukulele player accepted into the program in its history. This tune is cemented into ukulele history through Iz’s modern version we all know and love. But this rendition honors the jazz heritage of the tune, leaning into it’s original form performed and recorded by July Garland for Wizard of Oz. I draw from Sara Vaughan’s 1958 performance as well.

For the “musicians”, let the music breathe people, the tempo doesn’t need to be sterile all the way through. Put the time in on an instrument, stop taking shortcuts, and stop disgracing the sacred process of music. We don’t care about your new software plugin here. Stop putting lipstick on a pig.

For the listeners, take a moment to heal your musical expectations and attention span. Form new neural pathways or dust off the digital shavings of the tripe being forced down your ear canals. You’ll thank me later.
