CCYers making NEWS and ART: From CCY 2019 alumna Libby Riggs

I am currently working on a project for disability rights and advocacy: a website featuring stories and artwork from disabled teens and young adults (ages 12-26). Submissions will be open internationally and my team and I are hoping that through this project, the negative stereotypes of people with disabilities will be replaced with a sense of identity, uniqueness and strength in the disability community. The goal of this project, through a collection of powerful words and illustrations, is to inspire, educate, and unify.

We are hoping to reach and impact as many people as we can!

I am writing today with news about the Center for Creative Youth (CCY).

With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Wesleyan made the difficult decision to cancel all summer events on campus in 2020, putting CCY on hiatus for the summer. While we had hoped to bring the program back on campus in 2021, we realized that we cannot do so, as the pandemic continues to bring risk and uncertainty to us all.

We considered at length the notion of offering an online version of CCY in the interim. However, the on-campus, residential experience provides a crucial aspect of this program: The deep, rich interpersonal connections CCY students make with one another, growing and sharing as artists. Therefore, until the pandemic is behind us, the Center for Creative Youth will continue its hiatus. For over four decades, CCY has been a vibrant part of the summers here at Wesleyan. Our sincere hope is that the program will be revived for 2022.

CCY will be presenting an online event to take place on December 4, 2020 at 7pm EST. With this event, we will celebrate the CCY community and highlight how so many have found this program to be life-changing, providing focus, validation and motivation to future leaders of the artistic community. We will highlight the power of the arts and the hope young artists can bring to the world. The link will be shared here once it is available. We hope you will join us.

Today would have been the first day of classes for CCY 2020... I am missing this time of year when I would typically be working with a team of teachers whose incredible talents are only surpassed by their tremendous generosity; by a group of RAs/TAs who pour their hearts into their crazy-demanding jobs with spirit and dedication; by CFA colleagues who share our passion for great artists and performances that inspire; by the best nurse ever to serve our program; by supportive funders who come to check out our work in person; by the families who truly want nothing more than a great experience for their students who are in our care; and most vitally, by the students themselves who never cease to amaze me with their compassion, vulnerability, creativity and determination.
I am missing my CCY family.
While we are on hiatus for 2020, I know that our future students will lead us to a brighter place in days to come. Please, always, keep the heart <3 in art. #ccy #homeiswheretheartis by @wesleyan_ccy

We hope you and your loved ones are safe and well. We have some news…

Since the majority of the Center for Creative Youth program is based on the in-person experience, and the community bonds forged while on campus, we have determined, after careful review, that CCY will not offer an online learning alternative this summer. CCY will be on hiatus for 2020.
Please know that we share in your disappointment. We were looking forward to the opportunity to learn and grow together with the exceptional pool of talented young artists who applied from all over the world. While we will not have the chance to create together this summer, we hope you each continue to nurture your inner artist and acknowledge how vital the arts are in our lives and in our society. Creativity is not cancelled!

UPDATE: The in-person auditions at Wesleyan University scheduled for this Saturday, March 14, 2020 have been CANCELLED.
All students who were planning to attend this event will need to submit videos, writing samples or pictures of their portfolio online.
I am very sorry that we are not going to get the chance to meet this weekend - it is one of my favorite days of the year! BUT - I am happy to assist you in submitting whatever it is you need to finish your application.
