We did it! Our hard work together is bringing a full-service Grocery Store to North Richmond.

I’m proud of our multi-year partnership between Contra Costa County Department of Conservation and Development, the community, Community Housing Development Corporation - CHDC and Congressman John Garamendi to listen to the community and not give up on the dream of a full service market in North Richmond.

The County has invested millions of dollars and has worked side by side with CHDC, a strong black led, local non-profit based in North Richmond, to build new affordable housing, better streets and sidewalks, senior housing, a town center median, a Contra Costa Health center, and now a market.

Hard work and partnership is how we get it done! @chdc.bayarea @repgaramendi @cccountydcd taken in North Richmond, California by @westcccountygioia

Today El Cerrito laid to rest one of its greatest daughters.

💔Contra Costa’s (likely) oldest resident, lifelong El Cerrito resident and educator Theresa Parella, passed at age 109.

I had a chance to visit and interview Theresa at her house (where she was also born) in 2024 and in 2016, where she stated her secret to longevity: “Keep busy and keep the faith”.

She was a teacher for 38 years, most of that at Fairmont Elementary School in El Cerrito, where the library is named in her honor.

Her legacy lives on through her students. taken in El Cerrito by @westcccountygioia

🎬❤️ @stanford ‘s Bone Marrow Stem Cell Transplant Program saves lives, including my son’s life.

My son Chris is doing well after 14 months since his transplant and recently attended the annual reunion of Stanford transplant patients. It was inspiring to hear the stories of recovered patients.

Most patients who get transplants have a blood cancer. My son had a rare and deadly autoimmune disease called aplastic anemia.

Here’s my interview with Chief of Stanford’s Bone Marrow Transpant Program, Dr. David Miklos talking about their pioneering life-saving work.

And don’t forget to donate blood! It can save a life. 🩸 taken in Stanford University by @westcccountygioia

Wow! 🎬🌱🌎 check out @richmondtrees co-founder @leemicheaux talk about how they will use their @bayareaairdistrict $399,000 grant to increase urban greening and plant trees in neighborhoods that are impacted by pollution from the Chevron, refinery, including Point Richmond, Iron triangle, Santa Fe, North, Richmond, and Coronado.

Richmond trees was part of the @cityofrichmondca $10.7 million grant under the Air District’s new policy where penalties paid by industrial violators is reinvested back into the community where the pollution violation occurred. I strongly advocated for this new policy.

Cleaner air starts with small choices and grows into something powerful when we act together. 🌎💙

For California Clean Air Day, thousands of us walked and biked a short trip, took public transit, shared a ride, and turned off an idling engine. We are only fresh fruits and vegetables for a day rather than thirsty animal proteins.

One action may feel small, but multiplied across our communities, it can make a huge difference.

Here in Contra Costa County, every child deserves to breathe easier. Let’s make clean air a daily commitment, one choice, one neighbor, one moment at a time.

I visited our @humanacosta Head Start preschool in Richmond where over 100 children get quality childcare and developmental support. ❤️

We are fighting the Trump administration’s proposals to scale back these vital preschool programs.

They are also proposing that we ask each parent the immigration status of each family member as a condition of enrollment. This would discourage families from enrolling their children in our programs.

Parents are able to work and support their families after they drop off their children at our preschools. Taking this care away would decrease parents’ ability to work and support their families.

📢What does “public charge” mean for immigrant families?

It’s an immigration assessment of whether someone is likely to depend on government assistance, and it can affect certain green card applications.

Changes effective September 18, 2026, allow officials to consider a broader range of benefits, including some food and health assistance.

But receiving benefits does not automatically mean an application will be denied.

Before stopping benefits your family needs, get trusted, individualized legal advice.

From @ryseyouthcenter 🙌

This week marks 18 years since the doors at RYSE Youth Center first opened! RYSE was born through young people organizing for the safe spaces they deserve — they facilitated community needs assessments with youth and adults and ensured their experiences and voices would make a difference for future generations. I am proud to have worked beside Kimberly Aceves-Iñiguez, Kanwarpal Dhaliwal, and many youth leaders over the years.

Today, young people’s voices continue to rise up across Richmond. This month, four billboards created through RYSE’s youth-led Listening Campaign 2.0 broadcast what young people need from adults, institutions, and our community. Nearly 200 young people contributed their experiences, ideas, and analysis to this campaign. They shared a need for continuity from adults and systems, a desire for greater influence in decisions affecting their lives, and they shared a need for safe and healing spaces and schools.
