I was inspired by Mayor Mamdani’s July 4th address, delivered from George Washington’s desk. His words about who America belongs to sent me straight to the studio. What came out was a small spiral of history, hand-lettered, reflecting on how this country came to be and what it asks of us now. The rivers here still carry their first names, given by the Lenape, Lakota, Wabanaki, and Tongva, nations that did not vanish and are still here.

I chose a cracked platter for this piece. The flaw runs right through the word resistance, and that is the point. Resistance has never been unbroken. It splits, it scars, it holds anyway.

The only exit is resistance. Cracked, and still here.

Frederick Douglass

As we “celebrate” 250 years of America the great, I keep sitting with this quote.

We are watching a genocide happen in real time, in 4K. And still, somehow, it is easy to look away. It has always been easy to look away when the taking is done in the name of freedom. That is not new. That is the design.

Douglass knew this. He was not speaking abstractly, and neither am I. He understood that power does not hand itself over because it feels bad about what it’s done. It concedes when it is forced to.

I made this vase thinking about that. About what it means to hold history in your hands while it repeats itself in your feed. About what it means to keep making things, keep demanding, keep refusing to look away, even when looking away would be so much easier.
