I’m a late bloomer & I admit it. 🤷🏽‍♂️ Only recently have I discovered (or learned to appreciate) the value of truly sustained cultivated friendship connections. I’ve been so fortunate to have several true & amazing friends… some I’ve known since kindergarten! 🤯 Don’t get me wrong, I consider myself a deeply loyal friend BUT I suspect that I always simply assumed that there would always be a tomorrow. So, it was easy to focus on work & other things. 🤷🏽‍♂️ Now , I understand why my father-in-law spent so much time on the phone 📞 with his childhood friends. 😉 It’s about the cultivation of friendships & refusal to take them for granted. Routine check-ins and seizing opportunities to connect are important. Today, I got to host my Boi Tonaaay and his wife (and one of their friends from Montclair) at @eganandsons for the last leg of their return to the East Coast-trip before returning to Portland. Tonaay and I met at Rutgers during our undergrad years (circa 1981 🤫) & he’s still rocking the Scarlet Knights gear. ❤️ Today we laughed…like a lot…and shared a flood of memories. Now, luckily I see Toonaaay almost once a year but had not seen his wife since she and I were at the Catholic University of America (circa 1986) and we all lived in D.C.. So our stories were endless! 😂 Fortunately, I convinced my Boi to keep a few of our stories locked in the vault! 🤫 If I learned anything from my MHS 45th High School Reunion this year, it is to cherish these moments…because they sure can be fleeting. 🥲 #charmedlife #friends #family #grateful #lessonslearnedinlife taken in Egan & Sons by @wheatle_

So, I was making a coffee ☕️ run this morning and passed my alma mater - Nishuane Elementary School. 🏫 Now, I drive by this school almost every day BUT a glint of color caught my eye this morning and I had to explore. It was a bike 🚲 rack packed with colorful children’s bicycles. BUT it was more than just the color palette 🎨 that caught my attention. It was the reminder of just how safe this community remains. The parents of children in elementary school are comfortable enough to allow their children to bike to school. That is an absolutely beautiful thing. Kids from my neighborhood used to walk to the elementary school back in the 19xxx (don’t worry about the exact year 😎): usually in a group and always under the watchful eyes of our neighborhood adults. So very Proud of the Nishuane community’s sustained commitment to the safety of all…especially its children. Fragrance Community. I love Autumn 🍂 (truth be told, I also love Winter ❄️) BUT it is tricky in New Jersey. 😉 Just when we think that the cool/cold weather is here to stay, we get a few more weeks of “unseasonably” warm weather! 🤷🏽‍♂️ Well, I received my bottle of Black Mango Vetiver , by @scentsofwood and @mrcologne76 , the night before last and wore it yesterday. 🗓️ My first impression is that it is an incredibly cozy fragrance for the cool & cold weather. Like being wrapped in a scarf or cashmere sweater. I kept getting wafts of this fragrance 💎 all day. Fragrance Community . I’m a Jersey Boi through and through. AND I love our four seasons but am particularly partial to autumn 🍂. My centenarian mum was Jamaican but raised in Montreal and I inherited her Canadian 🇨🇦 blood… I prefer the cooler climes AND, as much as I’d like to start my Fragrance Wardrobe rotation, I know that the actual Fall weather has not yet arrived in NJ.. I know that our ‘Indian Summer’ can continue to mid-late October! 🗓️ So, I’m trying to maintain my resolve to wear these seldom reached for (but all bangers) fragrances from my warm weather rotation: Wet Stone by @amouroud , Marine by my peeps at @primerakw , After the Rain, Vetiver by @rojadoveperfumery , White Hinoki , Azrak by @boadiceathevictorious , and Cannabis Blue by @fragrancedubois . BUT may I be honest? I’m jonesing for the cold 🥶 weather frags and just snuck a spray of Signature Leather Tabac by @worldofzaharoff . Today, we said a final goodbye to our friend Tshombe. Tshombe, Ralph , Moorm and I have known each other since kindergarten! 🤯🤯🤯 We met Victor and @trudylucas292 in High School. 🏫 Thanks to Trude , we reconnected as a group at our Reunion five years ago and remained in regular contact every week since!. We were then blessed to reconvene a month ago for our 45th Montclair High Class of ‘81 Reunion. 🗓️ Little did we know, that would be the last time we’d see T-. Today, we hugged his family members, met some of his friends from Cali., reminisced and laughed…like a lot! 😂 Ralph’s more serious reminiscence was apt & a lesson for all. He recounted how Tshombe, an incredibly accomplished soul (each of my crew are standouts in their industries with Tshombe obtaining an undergraduate degree at Dartmouth followed by a MBA and Law degree on the West Coast) truly lived his life on his own terms! He traveled a lot! He played paddle & pickle ball regularly . He was super involved in his community…especially the arts 🎭 community. He hung with the famous folks….yup, that’s him with the Fonz.😉AND he was a regular at his beloved Burning Man (during his recent return home , I tried to impress Tshombe with my hipness when I asked, “yo! Tshombe , are you going to Running Man this year?” He looked truly saddened by my attempt but gave me a pass…I think…because of the occasion. 😂😂😂) Somehow, he always managed to stay in touch with us. ❤️ We will forever miss our friend. ❤️ (NOTE: the first pic was taken at my parents’ house. Oktoberfest at @montclairbrew was special. Denise and Leo always do an amazing job with this beer 🍺 community favorite. So, this year, Dad and I supported the event as Community Sponsors in memory of Mom. Why? My centenarian Jamaican Mom has always been my ‘ride or die’. She was always willing and available to be adventurous with me: craft beers, fragrance testing and more. Was she a beer drinker? NOPE! But she was so tickled by my passion for craft beer 🍻 and would often relate it to her childhood experience growing up in a predominantly Irish, Italian and Scotch neighborhood of Montreal. She had fond memories of the tight knit neighborhood and how neighbors would visit her parents and share sips of Stout. AND she loved when my friends (Ralph, Chris, Victor & Tshombe) would gather in the backyard during the summer to quaff brews, talk politics and philosophy…or more likely sh*#. 😉 Yup, Mom was always ‘down’ for an adventure. She was so proud that Denise (Jamaican) and Leo (African) opened the Montclair Brewery. We often pledged to visit the Brewery together but, sadly, never made that trip. I know that I don’t post about my NPL life much but it has been extremely meaningful to me for 23 years! (Kevin Hart’s exclamation of “damn!” is appropriate 😉) . What makes my NPL life rewarding is the same thing that makes my @nishuanegroup life rewarding- service to communities. 😊 For the past 2+ years I’ve been working with a group of absolutely amazing community partners to plan the construction of an $18 mil state-of-the-art Branch Library in Newark’s South Ward + quality affordable housing on the same campus❤️ (we currently have an application for tax credit funding pending). AND every phase of this process has been informed by the community thanks, in part, to a $50k grant from NJEDA that made 14 months of civic engagement a reality. 🤯 These partners include, but are not limited to, Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Clinton Hill Community Action, and Community Minded Developers (CMD). Plus, we have been fortunate to have the full support of the Mayor & Council. 🙏🏽 This week CMD, coordinated site visits for our State Legislators- Assemblyman Onyema and Senator Burgess. As Jane Jacobs said, “ Cities have the capability of providing something for everybody, only because, and only when, they are created by everybody”. About this absolutely gorgeous Summer (ISWIS) Saturday in New Jersey. I spent the first half with HP exploring the Montclair Farmer’s Market, the Valley Road Sidewalk Sale, the event at @ghosthawkbrewingco and a re-supply run at @applegatefarmic . 🤯 Amazing day ! ☀️ But this post is about @kinfolk.bbq.nj and @companyofyum . ❤️❤️❤️ My gurrl Jess , a/k/a “Montclair”, kept HP supplied with delish pies for the past six years…he loves her! And my peeps at @kinfolk.bbq.nj have been keeping HP stocked up on delectable BBQ for almost a year! 🤯 AND today was an absolute vibe! The outdoor event at @ghosthawkbrewingco . Connecting with @kinfolk.bbq.nj (chopping-it-up with the Pit Master) and @companyofyum . Hanging with my centenarian dad. Yup! Today was a good day! ❤️❤️❤️ PS- My only regret? OMG! My Bloomfield Zoning Board Hearing adjourned at an early hour…which never happens! 🤯 Great opportunity to watch the Season 4 Finale of Reacher. It was everything @alanritchson suggested. It had a bid of everything.
