A few months ago, my friend Lauren asked me to participate in a “A World of OppHERtunities” Networking Soiree with Black Women’s Professional League @bwplinc as a panelist. Of course I said yes! Y’all know I love a good, empowering moment for Black women to talk about careers, entrepreneurial accomplishments, challenges and everything in between! Sadly, a few weeks or so before the event, @abcnews reported that some 318,000 Black women had been pushed out of the public sector through insane budget cuts and layoffs that I’m sure our nation will soon regret. Many of us carried the thought of 318K women, mothers, sisters, friends, and caretakers who would undoubtedly be looking for new opportunities in career or to scale small businesses as a new source of their main income. Personally, I’m praying full restoration, increased favor with decision makers, and enlarged territories over their income, and peace and health within their households! BWPL, thank you for letting us share our stories: stories of why the work we do is important, stories of how we are bridging gaps, and every day anecdotes from the field. In this climate, it was a huge act of defiance and righteous indignation to host this event with a tone of Black resilience, Black excellence, and the laughter of Black joy that so easily filled the room!
