An oversized sense of whimsy. Encounters on film from @marinasblake #35mm 🎢🎠🌲🦜
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Jersey beaches, cold sea swims, leaky flasks, sandy kites, strange hats found in cupboards that unleash alter egos, questionable CDs in unpredictably loud car stereos, towels with no arms so you get changed under (“mu-mu”s), NPCs who stare at you as you get changed in the rain by your Honda CRV (Barbie car / adventure wagon), frogs that need road signs, friends who lift forks to the sky to tempt seagulls, makeshift bbqs and communal teeth brushing at the end of the night. These are things I treasure and love to capture. You can’t capture games too easily but the they also feature prominently, and I was too busy trying to not lose at poker to capture any.

These ones are for fans of the British seaside. Always a big theme for me and my film camera! 🍦

Here’s some from all sorts of natural and made up places. The “English riviera” of Torbay on our honeymoon, Jersey’s honeycomb beaches, caves and magical islands, the shell/ice cream people and crabs of Glastonbury-On-Sea and the beach and bouncy castles of Babbacombe Model Village. Interspersed with the strongest and most proud looking anemones, African daisies and roses from those places, a couple of other joys from Glastonbury and finally the peaceful spot of our back garden in the heat of the summer. by @whhimsy.world

I love taking photos with my point + shoot 35mm camera. It’s an expensive hobby but I have never wanted to give it up. The experience of snapping in the moment always brings me joy, no matter how the photo comes out.

I’m determined to share more of them as I go in 2025 but to start with I am sharing a backlog of my favourite recent images, capturing some of the magic, friendship and weird things I encountered. Things I was grateful for, that spoke of human oddness and natural beauty.

Here’s part 1 - a few from Malta’s gorges and finest water parks, Glastonbury’s 4am hillside views and inspiring places where I did my best dancing, pure joy of large bouncing balls in Orbital’s set, Shoreham’s annual duck race (rubber ducks, down a river - a surprising number of friends initially thought this was gonna be with real ducks), a big sort out of brainchild things and rediscovering the happiness of long days manual labour in the sunny smell of grass and rubbish skips (all precious and reusable things kept or passed onto other crews for things to come), plus ferns unfurling in spring, exploring hidden delights in Scottish gardens and cafes. by @whhimsy.world

Some final treats from the Enchanted Forest, here is a clip from Fantasy Fountains, the water show, in its full glory. Sound up! 🔈 In amidst some other treats, including nickel operated steering of pirate ships and the most cosy rickety ice mountain ride. We of course came home with a lot of merch, but when we found the “Music from the Enchanted Forest” on vinyl we were filled with inexplicable levels of joy - it is the nuttiest thing we have ever owned, and we love it.

Thank you @jerome_toole for some of these 📸📸

This week in Salem the Enchanted Forest has opened its gates for 2024! 🏰 🍬 While we UK island dwellers can’t be in Oregon ourselves, I hope to steal away your imaginations with the treasures Jerome & I found there.

Enchanted Forest is a DIY theme park, built pretty much by hand by Roger Tofte, his family and friends in the 1960s & 70s after he bought a patch of land by the freeway. Nestled amongst the trees are fairytale scenes and installations, and ride by ride over decades, it’s become quite the little park, and a total a HOOT!

We knew the artworks & rides would be wild, but we weren’t prepared for how rickety the 80s animatronics would be, or how we would lose ourselves laughing at some of the voice acting, or how EPIC the soundtracks would be. Mort Garson, eat your heart out. The whole park soundtrack has been made by the founders daughter, Susan Vaslev, recorded on Fostex 8-track tape decks back in the 70s and 80s. Piano, harpsichord and synths, they are an otherworldly journey full of arpeggios bumps and surprises.

As you wander around, the ride attendants are all wearing suits, and seem to be enjoying the chilled hilarity of their school holiday jobs. You find yourself at the Jolly Roger Inn, and after purchasing a large Fanta and slice of pizza, you sit down and await the Enchanted Forest’s answer to Disneyland’s fireworks - Fantasy Fountains… 7 minutes of sensory delight, as a dramatic score accompanies the movement of light and water in what feels like a 60s TV show set of another planet. Think if Star Wars made a ballet performed by jets of water. Exhilarating, calming, bewildering, mesmerising (kind of menacing?) - we adored it, and watched it twice.

Not only is this a theme park worth visiting in its own right, this is a real life fairytale of a man and family who have built and sustained an independent, non-commercial and rough-round-the-edges place for dreaming for decades. It is a rare beacon of self authored & funded art/attractions in a modern world, and we hope it lasts many more moons.

@jerome_toole & I wanted to go to the Pacific North West for a long time, yearning for the pines and waterfalls of the Twin Peaks opening credits. This summer, spurred on by an invitation to our friends Nick & Marah’s wedding in Oregon, we finally ignored the cost and the carbon and the fact we couldn’t drive and WENT.

We’re both very bad at publishing our photos in a timely way, but I want to share more this year. So here is a tiny selection of the vastness - the crystal clear lakes, evening heat, epic waterfalls, gothic motels, wild swimming, endless neons, roadside sculptures, refill coffees, trails, mountains, forests, attractions and oddities we encountered.

Going to be sharing more of the best bizarre things on @softworld.world, especially at DIY Salem roadside amusement park (one of the best days out of our lives) @enchantdforst.

1. 100 year old independent cinema in Portland
2. Snoqualmie Falls, WA
3. Wicked Witch, Enchanted Forest
4. @twedescafe (the coffee & cherry pie was 👌)
5. Smokey the Bear! With a 6 pack!
6. Up top Little Si, North Bend, WA
7. Trails in National Park, Portland
8. Bliss, standing in the river, Troutdale, Oregon
9. Minutes before the best Mexican food of our lives in a family owned roadside restaurant/bar called Rio Bravo
10. Big Foot is everywhere

Thanks Nick & Marah, and thanks Jerome for standing for us doing something we wanted to do despite how little reasonable sense it made.

(BTW, we always thought you needed to be able to drive to visit the States, but actually the buses and Amtrak trains were great and cheap, it’s fine!) by @whhimsy.world

And more from the Tarot Garden 🌞 @giardinodeitarocchi_official, starting with a close-up of The Prophet, and I hope showing a sense of the mind-boggling detail and form of these sculptures.
