Recently I had the pleasure to sit down with @artbaba_official to chat about the White Rabbit Collection’s 25th Anniversary. They put together this great little story which shows so many fond memories of studio visits and great times in China. Love to all the artists, Judith xxx

This is me seeing Zhou Jie's 周洁 incredible 'CBD' work for the first time in China in 2010. You can also see the artist working on her meticulously handcrafted recreation of Beijing’s Central Business District using delicate white porcelain. The structures sit atop a bed of rice, she explains, “Rice comes up from the ground, and buildings come up from the ground, yet buildings are not natural.” Miniature structures and roads are transformed into fantastical, coral-like growths.

And finally there are some shots of the work in the Gallery in 2023.

This is Li Changlong 李昌龙 and I back in 2018 when he introduced me to his 'Mr Umbrella' series.

The series features seven mysterious hooded images in similar positions, a pictorial reference to the Seven Worthies of the Bamboo Grove ‘竹林七贤’, a group of ancient Chinese scholars who had unique personalities and political aspirations. Inspired by the smooth lines and elegant structures of some outdoor umbrellas that he once saw by chance, Li renders their shapes as hooded figures, implying the alienation of human beings in contemporary society.

Congratulations to collection artist Liu Wei 刘韡 who has been awarded the Met Museum's Facade Commission for 2026.

It's the first time in 20 years that the museum has asked an artist from mainland China to create a work for its building! Visitors to the White Rabbit will be very familiar with his work.

'Entombed Warriors' by Oodgeroo Noonuccal, Xian, 1984

Qin Shi Huang
(first Emperor of China)
Plotted his burial,
With careful and clear detail.
Called in his artists
To prepare for his resurrection.
Clay warriors and horses,
A legion of foot soldiers,
Cavalry,
Archers and Generals.
Swords, lances and spears,
And battle axes in bronze,
His artists made for him,
And
All guarded his secret
For 2,000 years
The Earth Mother
Nursed her son,
Until
By chance,
A pick and shovel,
Revealed his secret.
The earth opened up
And exposed to the world,
His fear,
His insecurity.

On that same Taiwan trip in 2013 I also met Chen Cheng-Hsun 陳正勳.

@chenchenghsun

He is interested in challenging stereotypical notions of ceramics as a craft for making utilitarian vessels. Trained as a sculptor, he juxtaposes the use of clay, which he sees as simply one among many sculptural media, with other materials, such as wood, stone, metal or rope. His forms are simple, almost primeval.

Our trip to Taiwan in November 2013 was particularly successful. Lots of new friends made and acquisitions for the collection including Su Meng-Hung 蘇孟鴻 (shown here) and his work "The Album of Immortal Blossoms in an Everlasting Spring by Giuseppe Castiglione".

@menghungsu

We were also lucky enough to sample an endless array of delicious Taiwanese cuisine.
