In 2017, I was diagnosed with a terminal brain illness, acute toxic progressive leukoencephalopathy, which left me in locked-in syndrome for 10 months.

Coming back to life hasn’t been easy—and it wouldn’t have been possible without my incredible OT, PT, and SLP team. Therapy often overlapped, but OT was central in helping me rebuild my independence.

This reel shares part of my OT journey.

OT helped me rebuild my life. Imagine being the reason someone else gets theirs back.

Is it just us, or is it getting hOT in here? 🥵🔥

@ezrafrech and @daniellakaragach brought the heat to the Dancing with the Stars ballroom, and we can’t stop watching. 💃🕺 Daniella builds every routine around how Ezra moves, and together they make it look effortless.

It’s a lot like what occupational therapy practitioners (OTPs) do every day. They adapt activities to fit the person, helping people do the things they want, need, or love to do. Even if that’s turning up the heat on national TV. 😏

Who’s voting for Ezra and Daniella? 🙋‍♀️🔥

As Hispanic Heritage Month comes to a close, we are honored to share a special message from AOTA Vice President Cristina Reyes Smith, OTD, OTR/L, FAOTA.

In her message, Dr. Reyes Smith reflects on how she has experienced cariño throughout her personal and professional life. For many of us, it may be hard to describe cariño, too, but we definitely feel it! It is a warm embrace, a way of seeing others…it’s deeply woven into our culture. It is the warmth that helps people feel welcomed and seen. As occupational therapy practitioners and students, cariño is built into our connection and relationship with others, including our families, clients, colleagues, and the entire OT community. Thank you, Dr. Reyes Smith, for helping us close out Hispanic Heritage Month with this beautiful reminder of warmth and connection.

Occupational Therapy is everywhere — beyond the usual pediatric clinics and hospitals. Here are 5 unique practice settings you can work in that you might not have thought about:

✈️ Travel OT – Helping clients adapt and thrive in rural locations while on the move, ensuring independence no matter where life takes them.

🧠 Mental Health – Supporting emotional well-being and daily functioning for those facing mental health challenges.

💻 Assistive Technology – Help people perform everyday activities more independently by selecting, adapting, or training them to use tools, devices, and technology that support participation and function.

⚕️ Pelvic Health – Addresses not just the physical symptoms of conditions like incontinence, pelvic pain, or postpartum recovery, but how those symptoms ripple into daily life: sleep, intimacy, work, parenting, and self-esteem.

🚓 Correctional Facilities – Assisting incarcerated individuals with skills for rehabilitation and successful reintegration.

OT is diverse, dynamic, and making a difference in unexpected places! Which setting surprised you the most? Share your thoughts below! 👇

Carter first became interested in occupational therapy in high school after a conversation with her mom, a nurse. Her passion grew stronger in 2017 when her grandmother had a stroke, and she witnessed the life-changing role OT played in her recovery.

For Carter, the most rewarding part of the profession is building personal relationships with patients and tailoring each treatment to their individual goals and dreams. OT allows her to focus on what truly matters to each person, making every connection meaningful. 💙

As we approach the end of Hispanic Heritage Month, we want to thank everyone who has shared their experiences, words of wisdom, as well as their journey into occupational therapy. We see you and we are grateful you are part of this OT family. We recognize the passion and dedication you have poured into this field, and how your cultura continues to strengthen the fabric of the occupational therapy profession.

Today’s message from fellow occupational therapy practitioners and students continue to inspire us, and their words are a reminder of how our cultural identities and experiences are needed within occupational therapy. Let’s keep showing up as our authentic selves and creating spaces where others can do the same.

For this week’s challenge, share a story or picture that represents your heritage or culture. Whether it’s a favorite food, family tradition, cultural item, holiday celebration (such as Día de los Muertos), family heirloom, or flag, we’d love to hear and/or see how you connect to your roots.
