22 years in the making.
This land has given me countless memories and friendships—
but this one hits different.

A lifetime velvet buck, with my bow in hand. Something I never thought possible, though I’d played it out in my head a thousand times...

I’ve known this buck since 2022, believed to be 7 yrs old, and I’ve hunted this spot plenty... One season with my dad watching me through the binos as I blew a spot and stalk. He loved a view – and the prairie has that in spades. My hunting buddy @bsquared1133 couldn’t make the trip this year. Missed having him in camp.

Four days straight I chased this buck. Twice he showed 9 minutes after I left. Tough to sleep after that. Tuesday AM, it was time to head home.

That evening, I got a pic sent to me from a young man (I’ve known since he was a baby) who’d been keeping an eye on the cameras. Wouldn’t you know, the buck was out at 7:14 pm. Talk about the middle hoof. I showed the picture to my wife and said, “look at the time” and then left the room to sulk. She came down and said, “you have to go back in the morning” (She gets me.)

Truck still packed, I hit the road Wednesday AM and slipped back in for the evening hunt.

8:24 I responded 👎🏼 to a “see anything?” text.
Minutes after, as I was quietly battling a porcupine trying to get in my personal space – more on that later – I looked up and... there he was.
I grabbed my bow, drew, had one eye on the porcupine and the other through my peep. I settled in and let the arrow fly. I watched him through shaky binos. I couldn’t tell if he fell over or laid down, so I backed out.

The next morning, after not a wink of sleep, I went to where I last saw him... and he wasn’t there. My heart sank. But after a few steps, I looked to my right and he was only 20yds away. The relief. Pulling him out of the grass, the points just kept coming. I was in shock.

I ended up running into a guy, Cody, who had a ton of history with this buck as well. His eagerness to give intel, snap pics and even help me cape the buck was humbling. We spent a long time chatting over this incredible buck, both in awe.

Objects in the mirror are closer than they appear.. Fixin’ to drive 2+hrs, sweat through 5 shirts to cut a branch I have 5000 pictures of while this guy is thinking “there goes the idiot again.”

Bear was convinced this painted turtle was today’s Scooby Snack.

Apparently there’s a fire-red bird ripping through the canopy catching bugs like a little outlaw and nobody even notices him!?? Anyone??

I’ve spent a lot of time in the Mn & Wi woods, and somehow today was the first time I’ve ever seen one of these. Didn’t even know a Scarlet Tanager existed until now.

Hard to believe something that bright can disappear into the woods that fast.
