A visual exploration of youth culture from the past and present through the eyes of the skateboarding community of Waltham Forest.

“These photographs capture a moment of togetherness during our summer skate jam celebrating the 10th anniversary of Lloyd Park concrete skatepark, providing a window into the changing face of our community.
Skate jams like these are a tradition but are only possible thanks to the dedication and commitment of individuals, creating a distinct, heartfelt space. Like many parts of London, Walthamstow is always changing — never staying still.
New people pick up skateboarding all the time, many coming back after long periods away. The skatepark dynamics are in constant flux: some fathers skate with their kids; there are after-hours sessions with friends who have been meeting up for generations; growing groups of mothers taking up skating for the first time, finding a focus and a like-minded community; regular sessions with young teens, focusing their collective energy, pushing and learning from each other, establishing their crew. The girls are no longer an anomaly and are now a positive and welcomed presence; finally, the balance is tipping.
For those who visit, the lifelong bonds formed at the skatepark are what make it special. Lloyd Park is naturally the local focus but there are pockets of skaters and sessions happening all over Waltham Forest.”

In the late 1990s, Finian Greenall was a gifted musician who’d found expression through being a DJ and producer - the zeitgeist of the moment.

Having just released his first EP, “Front Side Blunt Side” on legendary London label Ninja Tune, in 1999, the record company got in touch with near neighbour Wig Worland to meet Fin in North London for his first press shoot.

“We wanted to show the idea of record shopping so we went to a local supermarket, loaded up the trolley with a few ‘platters that mattered’ and asked if we could take a few photos.” Wig Worland

“Wig managed to persuade the security guard that we were filming something for Tesco — which gave us around 10 minutes to shoot this roll — with Wig holding onto a trolley on his skateboard, balancing his camera on the metal bars, and me pushing it along.”

The rest of the session was shot back at Fin’s apartment in North London.

Presented here are the results of that session — a couple of unassuming, low-key photos of a musician right at the start of something.

Almost all of the images ended up being used in the dance music press at the time — Mixmag, DJ Mag, and a whole bunch more titles now lost to the sands of time.

Nearly three decades on, Fink has played all over the world touring with his band for 20 years, written hits for John Legend and Amy Winehouse, produced soundtracks for film and is still releasing new music through the Fink name today, the latest — his 9th studio record — released just a few months ago. Shot these for Nike Football in Milan in 2008. First photograph shows Marco Materazzi with what appears to be a halo around his head. However...

Italy vs France in the 2006 World Cup Final in Berlin. Italian man mountain Marco Materazzi provoked the seemingly superhuman Zinedine Zidane enough to remove Zidane from play; effectively conceding the game to Italy.

Materazzi later admitted he provoked Zidane by making comments about a member of France midfielders family; "I was tugging at his shirt and he said to me 'if you want my shirt so much I'll give it to you afterwards,' I answered that I'd prefer his sister."
