You shouldn’t have to follow a sport to know when South Africans are doing something exceptional in it.

Paddling has been part of my life for around 30 years. These results mean a lot when you know the people, the clubs and the families behind them. But they deserve to travel well beyond our paddling circles.

So this one is about giving this team their moment. To everyone who raced for South Africa in Spain, and the people who helped get them there — there’s a lot to be proud of. šŸ‡æšŸ‡¦

Share this with someone who loves seeing South Africans succeed. Let’s get a few more people following these athletes before their next world championship. by @wildairsports

The value of a perfectly aligned sponsorship can be enormous.

The hard part is finding one.

When I was at Red Bull, I would get hundreds of sponsorship proposals every month. And yet finding the opportunities that were actually right for the business was still difficult.

I still had a budget to spend. I still had commercial outcomes to deliver. I still had to be able to defend the investment internally and report back on whether it had actually worked.

But discovery was messy.

Verification was difficult.

Comparing one opportunity against another was difficult.

And too much depended on who knew who, what landed in your inbox and whether the person pitching the opportunity knew how to translate its value properly.

It shouldn’t be that hard.

The right sponsorship can give a brand access to the right audience, meaningful real-world engagement, content, media, customer relationships, data, hospitality, community and ultimately commercial return.

But only if the fit is right in the first place.

That’s a big part of why we built GoBadger.

To make finding, evaluating and investing into sponsorship opportunities easier, more transparent, more commercially sound and far easier to defend inside the business.

If you’re a brand looking for better sponsorship opportunities, join the @gobadger.io waitlist.

South Africa is already home to some of the best events in the world.

But we’re at a watershed.

The opportunity has changed. Audiences have changed. Brands have changed. The economics have changed.

The events that adapt will keep growing. The ones that don’t will get left behind.

Cape Epic has future-proofed itself. Gravel Burn has started with that thinking from day one. Luxurious Marble Circus, Scorpion Kings, Ultra and others are showing what the next generation of event value can look like.

South Africa has the people, the landscapes, the culture and the capability.

The ceiling is massive.

But the future belongs to the events prepared to evolve. by @wildairsports

Are marketers trying too hard to game the algorithm?

Doug Bird believes marketers can self-sabotage when strategy, impressions, hooks and algorithm tactics become the entire focus.

The goal is still to reach real people. The algorithm is not the only way to do that.

Build for the sponsor you have. But don't forget the partners you may want next.

Doug Bird's point: if an event's content and brand are shaped only by one current sponsor, future partners may no longer fit the ecosystem you've built.

ā€œEvents are gateways to people.ā€

For @doug_bird, the value of a successful sporting event extends beyond the size of its audience. Someone actively taking part in an event can be more valuable than someone participating passively.

That helps explain why successful sporting events are increasingly being acquired by conglomerates: they connect brands directly with people.

In Episode 8 of EvolvX, @wildairagency founder and former Head of Sports Marketing at Red Bull South Africa Doug Bird explores the commercial value of participation and experiential marketing.

Are brands still placing too much value on passive reach and not enough on participation?

What these athletes have done is incredible, but the next few months could be just as important as the medals themselves.

Right now, they have attention, momentum and a reason for people to care about their journey. That is a rare window, and if they use it well, it can help them build much more than sporting careers.

For young athletes today, moments like this can become the foundation for stronger personal brands, better commercial opportunities and long-term relationships with people and brands who want to follow the journey, not just celebrate the result.

The medals create the moment. What they do with that moment could shape everything that comes next.

Let’s help these athletes grow by giving them a follow and a share:

MultiChoice has been bringing South Africans world-class entertainment and sport for decades.

For many of us, it has been part of how we watched the biggest matches, followed our teams and shared major sporting moments.

That’s why this story is about more than a struggling broadcaster.

It’s about the value of what was built over time: reach, trust, infrastructure and a direct relationship with millions of households.

The interesting question now is what that means for the rest of South African sport.

As broadcasters focus their money on the biggest rights, smaller sports and events will need to get much better at building and owning their own audiences.

The opportunity is there. But waiting to be discovered is no longer a strategy. by @wildairsports

Most of us don’t realise the moment it happens.

One day you enter an event. A few weeks later you’re waking up earlier, eating differently, making new friends, discovering new places and spending your weekends completely differently.

That’s the power of participation. It doesn’t just change what you do. It changes who you become.

That’s why I believe the biggest opportunity for brands isn’t simply to sponsor sport. It’s to become genuinely useful to people on that journey. by @wildairsports

When we think about brands like Nike, it’s easy to assume their advantage comes from bigger budgets, better athletes or better advertising.

I don’t think that’s what separates them.

The strongest brands seem to understand that people don’t build loyalty in adverts. They build it in the moments around the sport itself. The Tuesday night running club. The conversation after a race. The local coach. The person whose opinion you trust because they’ve put in the miles.

That’s why this story is valuable.

It isn’t really about Nike. It’s about where brand preference is actually formed.

As AI makes it easier for everyone to create content, and digital channels become even more crowded, I suspect the brands that continue to grow won’t just produce more marketing.

They’ll spend more time earning a place inside the communities that shape people’s behaviour.

That’s a much harder thing to build.

It’s also much harder to copy. by @wildairsports

I’ve spent more than 20 years working in sport, entertainment and sponsorship, and the biggest thing I’ve learnt is that the best brands don’t always spend the most.

They just understand the space better.

Five ideas that have shaped the way I think about sports marketing:

• Sport isn’t media. It’s identity.

• Communities create culture.

• Participation changes the relationship.

• Build a programme, not a campaign.

• Build assets, not exposure.

I’ll be unpacking subjects like this and more over the next 90 days. by @wildairsports
