A small but special sighting! 🐦

This week, we were pleased to record our first Tree Sparrow at Wilder Doddington for several years.

The sighting comes as new Government figures reveal that the UK’s farmland bird populations have declined by 63% since 1970, with Turtle Dove and Tree Sparrow among the species to have experienced the steepest declines.

At Wilder Doddington, we’re working to restore a rich mosaic of habitats where wildlife can thrive. Farmland birds including Skylark, Grey Partridge and Yellowhammer continue to find a home here, and it’s especially encouraging to see a Tree Sparrow again.

There’s still much to do, but moments like this give us hope for a wilder future 💚

Learning in nature 🌿

It was great to welcome Year 13 Applied Science students from Walton Academy to Wilder Doddington.

Despite the unusually dry summer, students discovered a variety of species while carrying out woodland transect surveys in the morning, before releasing their inner child with some shelter building in the afternoon.

Happy UK Fungus Day! 🍄

After such a dry summer, fungi are keeping us waiting at Wilder Doddington, so we’re looking back at some of our finds from previous years.

From unmistakable Fly Agarics amongst the leaf litter to tiny Candlesnuff Fungus emerging from decaying wood, we’re looking forward to seeing what autumn brings.

Fungi play a vital role in nature, breaking down dead material, recycling nutrients and helping other life to thrive.

A whole world of wonders waiting to be discovered! 🍂

It’s been a Clouded Yellow year, with these long-distance migrants seen in unusually high numbers across Britain.

We had a wonderfully wild time at the launch of the Lincolnshire Rewilding Network at Wild Wrendale over the weekend.

It brings together people, places and ideas, creating opportunities to share knowledge, practical experience and momentum for nature recovery at every scale.

Mothy Monday ✨

It’s a quieter time of year at the moth trap, but this week we were treated to a real beauty.

The wonderfully named Merveille du Jour translates as ‘marvel of the day’ and, looking at those intricate green markings, it’s easy to see why 💚

Also making an appearance were Northern Deep-brown Dart, Barred Sallow, Beaded Chestnut, Orange Swift and more.

A wild Lincolnshire Day 🦫🌿

Yesterday, Wilder Doddington staff and volunteers headed to Boothby Wildland for a guided tour through the landscape and beaver enclosure, before getting stuck into some scrub clearance.

A big thank you to the Boothby team for such a wild welcome!

A wild welcome to Ian Froggatt, our new Wilder Director 🌳

With a background in woodland management and extensive experience leading operational teams, Ian is used to thinking in ‘tree time’ and is well placed to embrace Wilder Doddington’s 400-year vision for nature, people and the landscape.

Unsurprisingly, Ian is easily distracted by trees and this particular veteran oak caught his eye!
