Persian Love Cake is one of the most visually stunning sweets, showered with crushed pistachios and pink-kissed, dried rose petals over a drippy glaze. It’s a buttery, moist, crumbly almond cake perfumed with rose, cardamom and citrus. I came for the immense stillness, vast open skies, and the heat. But the harsh intensity of the desert invited introspection and a deep connection to the unseen. For many it’s a vision quest or crucible for spiritual awakening.

Deep in the Mojave, removed from modern noise, where you hear only the wind, it does feel like a portal, vortex or energetic gateway that allowed for: deeper access to intuition, past lives presence, spirit realms, profound visions, intense dreams, emotional release and an energetic shift.

Receiving a visitation by a Great Horned owl at dawn, for me is not a random act. Owls are gatekeepers of the unknown and exist between worlds, they are liminal creatures...wise and intuitive dwellers of the in between. I too am currently living in the in between. The owl stayed with us all day, perched in the Piñon Pine..watching over us with an intense gaze..he had a message to deliver and I am so glad I was there to receive it. #owls #desert #visionquest taken in Mojave Desert by @wildgarden

I gave in to the hype. Was so curious if the viral Dubai Chocolate was THAT good, or was it all about the snap and crunch. I’m here to tell you it’s my fav chocolate. It’s the combo of homemade pistachio cream, which is a heavenly creature, mixed with a touch of earthy tahini and delicately crunchy kataifi (middle eastern shredded phyllo dough), topped with flaky sea salt and gold dust. I chose to make them in the Reese’s Peanut Butter cup-style, because I have zero ambition (or talent) to be a chocolatier and was not buying equipment for something I might not like. This version required only my in stock mini cupcake tray and liners. I brought them to a dinner party and most politely passed. I insisted they at least try a bite..a proper food fight ensued..with all of them either eaten or stashed in pockets for the trip home to eat in solitary peace. Norwegian Lefse. Love me some flat bread..roti, naan, parantha, dosa, saj, tortillas, lavash..all of them but especially if they’re chewy and elastic. Lefse is nearly half potato (russet) and is both light and airy and a tad chewy. They identify as both savory and sweet. I love them with smoked salmon but Joaquin loves them with butter and strawberry preserves. Y’d find me saddled up to a local Izakaya picking off yakatori skewers on the reg if I lived in Japan - those casual, pub-like joints with lots of sweet smoke and sake. I hunt them down here too, in LA and the South Bay and one of my go-tos is kawa or torikawa…grilled chicken skin. If done right it gets crispy, almost airy, crunchy with just a hint of fatty juiciness. I prefer just salt and pepper, but tare sauce delish too, if you want a hint of sweet soy. I now make these at home when the craving hits. If I don’t have the leisure to fire up the konro with binchotan, I just use my cast iron grill pan. Not as good but good enough. Finish with seaweed or wasabi salt and some togarashi (hot chili pepper). A little bit of heaven.
